  • PURE COMPLACENCY PUNISHED! | Liverpool 0-3 Atalanta reaction
Liverpool's Europa League hopes were left hanging by a thread as they suffered a shock 3-0 defeat to Atalanta in the first leg of the sides' quarter-final tie.
A brace from Gianluca Scamacca and goal from Mario Pasalic helped Atalanta inflict the Reds' first home defeat since February 2023.
Jurgen Klopp's side now need a miracle in Bergamo to have any chance of enjoying a glorious finish to the German's reign in Dublin.
Liverpool reporter David Lynch was at Anfield to see the action unfold, and believes complacency from the manager and his players was to blame for a heavy defeat.
He singles out just one player - Cody Gakpo - for a pass mark, but felt there were shocking performances across the pitch for the hosts.
Check out this review of the game and let us know whether you still believe the Reds can turn things around in Italy.

First of all, the team selection by Klopp was poor today, this an Italian team, they play physical so you don't play soft players like Jones and Harvey Elliott, Atlanta Midfield players would just run them over. Klopp didn't learn from the Man U FA cup game where he withdrew his key his midfield players and Liverpool end up losing the game.
Liverpool spent all the time playing the ball at their own back end of the field, back passes upon back passes with few attacks.
Am I never a big fan of back passes, especially when Atlanta was playing so aggressive, sooner or later mistakes are going to happen?

I am never a person to over react to results, sometimes when we win people say everyone played well and when we lose everyone played badly. However tonight I think was the worst performance overall by the team and subs under Klopp I have seen in his reign. We lost to Napoli last season in the CL in Naples but this was the worst. Gapko and Jota are the only players I can give credit too. Kelleher did make good saves but had bad moments also. Atalanta had 7 shots on target and 6 should have been goals. I hear people constantly saying we need more goals to catch up on goal difference on Arsenal in the league, but it is actually giving away goals is killing us as a team, 11 goals given away last 5 games, and scoring 10. Klopp rolled the dice with the team selection I was surprised by the team, but our stronger team second half lost 2-0 and could have been worse. A bad night all round. we need to shape up or the league season could end the weekend. I cant see a comeback this team defend too well and away from home in Europe this season bar the last team we played we are not at the level in Europe

@@tobiojolola6338 Exactly. Klopp has had plenty of time to make the team more solid defensively and failed to do so. (But, then again, FSG gave him £16m Endo. 🤣) If worse came to worse, he should have switched to 4-4-2 to make them harder to beat. Instead, he insisted on playing his heavy metal/headless chicken football. And, why does no one ever call him out for not dropping players who fail to perform time after time? Man seems determined to go out with only a CC to his name. He had a winning formula with Bradley at right-back and Gomez at left-back. What does he do? He decides to tinker. Szoboszlai, Nunez, Diaz and Salah should all be dropped for their poor performances.

I mean, Atalanta players are obviously used to heavy atmospheres and noisy stadiums. And english stadiums and atmosphere are different, it is more like going to a theatre, it is way more calm than Serie A atmosphere (I am not saying that is necessary a good thing, just a consideration). So I don't think that a "different" atmosphere or flags, would have changed Atalanta's game or would have intimidated the players. Good luck for the match @Bergamo.

Shock defeat? No. Not for people like me. These sorts of defeats have been coming since the beginning of the season when they have consistently conceded the first goal early. At the business end of the season, that will be punished.
FSG Liverpool have a lot of average to mediocre players that Klopp has overachieved with. These are the games where mofos are going to see the difference between a £16m defensive midfielder and a £100m defensive midfielder. The worst part is everyone took it for granted that FSG Liverpool were favourites in this tournament. Football is not played on social media. It's played on the field.
FSG refusing to spend like a big club means their project is not designed to win. That's why a winner such as Alonso was not compelled to join. So, they will always get the leftovers of the big spenders. This defeat is on FSG. They have been signing nothing but cheap downgrades in attack. (Remember, attackers cost more than players in any other position.)

    • @zingisamahlasela
      @zingisamahlasela 2 месяца назад

You are talking nonsense. Yes FSG can spend more, but this loss is not on them. Liverpool have a tendency to not have an urgency to win these days. Good stuff David. We were abject, dogdirt. Given the stage of the season, stage of the competition and the narrative around this season I am shocked by that. Atalanta deserve a lot of credit, marking system made life very difficult but we should be performing a heck of a lot better than that. Saying that we had numerous chances to score, not clinical once again. Nearly conceding early, again...Atalanta could have had 7 tonight.
We've had special comebacks in Europe over the past few years, but I cant see us overturning this one, away this time for the second leg with a mountain to climb. Perhaps with a great performance and result at the weekend we can gain confidence, who knows.
Wrong stage of the campaign to be performing like that. But games are fine margins, Kelleher saves and catches those 2 as he should do and Darwin and Jota take those chances we are talking differently.
Hopefully an abysmal day at the office and thats it, we will see Sunday and for the rest of the season. It would be a shame to see Klopp's "last dance" become a deflated sway.

As you say Endo is limited in his range of passing to beat the press as are Gomez and Tsimikas in an area where Trent is an absolute master. This meant Mac Allister having to retreat to offer a passing option and not be higher up the field to make those killer passes.

lets forget the second leg and focus on the league. I would leave players home. The mental space was not right after the United game and there was no one to lift them, no spark for a better performance, so meeting a focused side resulted in disaster. Overall it was always expected that if you go away in Europe you can get beaten but at home this was too much.

Agree with everything you have said David. Fair play to Atalanta, they worked so much harder than our players, closed down every Liverpool player instantly and had a much greater desire to win. We had no answer to their press other than to keep playing the same slow short pass (usually backwards) game that failed here spectacularly. Unfair to pick on any one player as there were so many dreadful performances. I think I said in a previous comment Elliot is wasted as a right winger, he is much better playing more centrally so I’m not going to criticise him for playing to orders. Probably in the top 5 worst performances in the entire Klopp era, which is a huge shame as that is not how he would have wanted to play out his final European Anfield night. We have no realistic chance next week.

I think Elliott is better as a Right Winger than a Central Midfielder, he doesn't have enough physicality for the mdifield and having Elliott on the right when he is left footed means he struggles to make tackles because he has to lead with his weaker foot.
I'm not sold on Darwin Nunez, I know he's done better this season but he has so many chances, so many offsides, I can't think of anyone who has a manay chances as he does. I'd be tempted to send him out on loan next season just to see if he can recover his Benfica form.
Cody Gakpo won lots of duels but he needs to win more assists and goals, so many people talk about Gakpo's defensive stats but it's his attacking stats that matter because that's where Jurgen Klopp plays him. I just don't see Gakpo as a striker, as bad as Nunez was he did more for the team than Gakpo did.
Wataru Endo, Joe Gomez and Kostas Tsimikas was our worst players tonight, they failed to turn up for the game and all 3 should have been taken off at half time. It felt like Endo, Gomez and Tsimikas struggled to make a pass and struggled to keep possession losing the ball it bad places where they had to be bailed out by teammates.
Robertson, Szoboszlai, Salah and Diaz failed to add anything to the game when intorduced as a sub. They are senior first team players and should do better when brought on. Szoboszlai cost £60M, he should be doing better.

Liverpool hit abit of a wall against a good side. There was no complacency, but there was alot of fouling by a good atalanta side. The refereeing has been poor this season. Liverpool are still a good side despite what some opinons say. It was a poor performance overall.

Arrogance from top to bottom. The team Klopp picked for a European QF was arrogant. Tsmikas wasn’t good enough to play when Robbo was injured yet he plays when both left backs are fit. Top goal scorer on the bench, and Diaz our most in form winger on the bench. Van Dijk jogging and getting beat in sprints. The captain sets the tone, and Van Dijk is not captain material. Similar to old Trafford in the cup when we were playing ole football like we were 5-0 up at 2-1. Captain should have stamped that out. Hendo and Milly would have. 💯 Klopp doing interviews in the midst of a title and cup charge saying "other managers collect trophies, I collect relationships". As a fan, I want trophies NOT relationships. What kind of message is that sending? He looks like he’s already on the beach, and just going through the motions. He didn’t seem too upset to me. Fans were right to protest ticket prices too.

Klopp has been brilliant with his half-time tweaks this season, but his half-time subs yesterday were bizarre. Gomez and Endo were close to being our worst performers but played all/most of the game, respectively. Jones was doing OK in a team that was struggling and was hooked for Szobo who hasn't been great in recent weeks. Elliot was playing quite well having fully earned a starting berth in recent months, but was being played in a postion that we all know isn't his best - and was hooked for Salah who has been under par recently. Swapping Bradley (or Trent) for Gomez, bringing Elliot into midfield in place of Endo and switching MacAllister to the 6, and bringing on Diaz and Jota or Salah up top after taking off Darwin would have more sense to me. But of all of those probably the only sub I'd have made at half time was Endo. It just felt like panic stations making 3 subs at half time. My fear at this point is if there's been a subconscious shift in the team knowing whatever Klopp says he's only there for 8 more games at this rate. He's been aplopectic in both of the last two games at various points, but United was poor whilst yesterday was dreadful.

  • @Whyus12344

This season was a pretty successful midfield refresh. Next season HAVE to be an attack refresh.
Diaz and Nunez cannot be relied upon to finish chances. They cannot even score one v ones consistently.
Salah can finish but his legs appear to be gone.
Jota can finish but he is unavailable for half a season.
Gakpo has some ups and downs he sometimes starts very well and was a time he was very poor and admitted himself l see him like Minamino type of player in Liverpool no disrespect good in cup games
This means that all of them are potentially substitute quality, and new blood that are starters have to come in, just like how we got in the new midfielders. It's going to be harder since attackers are pricier, but hopefully we get at least one value for money gem, much like Macca was.

  • @LfcFanGav
    @LfcFanGav 2 месяца назад

This is Liverpools problem. We have strikers who cannot finish. Check out all our stats after or during games. Shots off target is always way more than on target. Mostly by about 3:1. Nunez, Diaz utter shite! All the missed chances during games and we have to go till 90 mins plus to get the win. Exerting all energy even to beat the bottom teams. We never win comfortable coz the top 3 cannot finish. Mo is unfortunately past his best almost. Hes been brilliant this past 7 years. 👏🏻💪🏻 Its up to the young lads and both Nunez and Diaz cannot finish. The wing backs then push all the way up forward trying to help the failing attack score and then we get caught out on the counter with 4 on 2 at times. All this effort every game and we are then gassed out end of season. Look at the 2020 team. Salah, Mane, Bobby. Goals galore! Proper finishers! Games won by half time most weeks. Then make the subs and rest the lads. Overall its a worse squad than 2020 in terms of finishing and defending Vvd and Mo's age saddens me too. Not long left. Another rebuild looming for the new manager 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Gomez, Nunez, Gakpo, Diaz Tsimikas out!!!

You're spot on. It shouldn't and need not be so hard to beat sheff utd. It only ends up stressful to the end because of Darwin et al who really make it seem incredibly hard to score a tap in. Just tap it in. Unreal how they don't even get those on target. Can't even say the other keeper was so good. It's the attack that is so bad and then our RB is up front for no reason and walks back after giving the ball away. There is no back 4 under klopp and I would like to see a defensive back line of 4 again with someone new. When the opposition get the ball off you it doesn't have to mean they have a one on one. I don't think it was complacency. I think again it was fans tearing into the team after the MU game affecting the players who were snatching at chances.
