    Thank you for the video sir! My 3rd valve is stuck and I can't even press it down, and I couldn't get the bottom part open either. Is there no other way than to go to an instrument repair shop? Thanks!

      If you have never fixed an instrument before, you may want to take it to a shop though. Without seeing it, I cannot say for sure, but it is possible that you could do more damage if you are not careful.

    I bought a vintage LeBlanc Selmer from a gentleman that works on instruments at a local school. He cleaned (seeming perfect) in front of me using a lint-free cloth, replaced the springs, and oiled the valves. it worked great for a day or so then the 1st and 3rd valve (intermittently) will either stick or be slow to come back up. I even saw him insert one of the valves from the bottom as you suggested in one of your videos (if not this one). I love the tone and hope I can eliminate this random sticking. Any suggestions?

      My first guess is that cleaning the valve casings may have loosened up some junk inside the trumpet. Keep using it for a few more days and the problem should solve itself. It could be another problem, but this is the most likely.

    QUESTION. I have a 1920s Jenkens Special Cornet. Beautiful silver. The valve bottom was stuck and when I pulled out the valve from the top the piston separated from the spring assembly. If I push them together it is loose and unplayable as the piston will not slide freely. Is this repairable? Can I replace a 1920s valve? Help!

      It sounds like the baluster came loose from the piston. The two can be soldered back together. You need to be careful to line up the ports and also make sure the valve stem is in the middle of the hole in the top valve cap.
      This sounds like an interesting repair. If you would like, you can send it to me and I can feature it in a video. Let me know if you are interested.

    Hi, sadly you are in the USA and I am the other side of the pond. I have an old trumpet (boozey&hawkes), the valves are not stuck but sometimes get a bit sticky, cleaned and oiled them and they work okish but still stick a little on occasion. One things I have noticed is that getting the valves out is very difficult, the top unscrews and you can pull them up, then it gets very hard for a bit, then they come out. Going back the other way is much the same, a lot of effort is required to push them back in, once in they usually go up and down ok, but its like the valve is too big for the insert in the casing. Any thoughts? I cant see any obvious problem but then its clearly not a huge huge bang.

      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  2 года назад

      The only thing that I can think of is that the bore of the casing may be ever so slightly smaller on the top if the valve has not worn the casing evenly. If this is the problem (I am not confident that it is) it can possibly be fixed by putting a ground casing mandrel in the top of the casing and tapping it lightly several times. I hope this helps, but I am not so sure on this one without seeing it.

      @@TheBrassandWoodwindShop Thanks for the hint, its what I was thinking. The middle valve (2) seems fine, and the 1&3 valves are fine in that casing and 2 sticks in 1&3 casing... I was looking at doing a mandrel job on it, so I will try, nothing much to lose.

    Question . I have the #2 valve on my old conn sousaphone that does not go in is not the casing in this case is the bottom of the valve that has a dent how would I reshape it back or pop out the dent and witch mandrel should I use or is it better to replace it?

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop
      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  4 года назад +1

      The best way to fix it is to use a N28D ground casing sleeve from Ferree's Tools. (ferreestoolsinc.com)(You need to tell them it is for a Conn sousaphone and they will send you the correct diameter.) Put the valve in the sleeve and tap the bottom inside of the valve with a drum stick until the valve conforms to the inside of the sleeve.

    When I pull in the 3rd valve slide, my 3rd valve gets stuck, but when I pull out the slide, the valve gets unstuck, do you know what the problem could be?

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop
      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  2 года назад

      My first guess is that the third slide tubes on the tuning slide are skewed. When the slide is in the trumpet, the slide tubes put stress on the tubes that are on the trumpet. The tubes put stress on the casing and make it out of round which makes the valve stuck. If this is the problem, the valve should work when the slide tubes on the third slide are made parallel.

    I have a similar problem, but with a 4 valve euphonium. Any tips on what I can do to fix this? (valve that is like this is 1st valve)

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop
      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  2 года назад +1

      That is a very common problem with Yamaha euphoniums. Usually the problem is junk at the bottom of the casing. If that is the problem take off the bottom valve cap and put the valve in from the bottom and work it up and down vigorously for a little while. This should fix the problem, but there are other possibilities too.
      I hope this helps,
      Art

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop
      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  4 года назад

      There are too many reasons for valves to get stuck in this manner to mention them all. But this is what I would try first: take the valve out and take off the bottom valve cap. Clean out the casing with a rag on the end of a flute cleaning rod. Then put the valve in through the bottom of the casing and work it vigorously for a minute. Put it back together and see if it works. I hope this helps, but it is hard to know what to do without seeing it.
