Considering the small size of the cabinet and speakers and the ceramic cartridge, that is an impressive improvement.

Your statement about the Crossley being the reason records are sold in stores again is true whether people want to accept it or not. I remember when vinyl started popping up a decade or so ago and it was in places the suitcase players were sold.

Wow, very big improvement. Crosley's finally got the impedance right!! Now if they'd just include a better quality stylus, they would have a pretty amazing starter unit / portable unit and the "bad reputation" might just fade away in time.

I'd love to hear a direct stereo feed if you ever get a chance. Also, would it be possible to compare the sound of the diamond stylus versus the various sapphire ones? Thanks for the great videos!

I have to admit that for a portable, the new unit does sound markedly better.
But that means we have to figure out WHAT they did to make it better.
    Might I suggest a side-by-side teardown?

I noticed a difference(and I was watching on my phone! I love that red color too. I’d love to see one of these come out with a magnetic cartridge, but maybe they’re not wanting to go that route with the Cruiser, and I get that. Anyway, great review as always.

That sounds a lot better indeed. I'm glad you pointed out that the plastic cantilever doesn't affect the sound quality noticeably on these players. The real letdown here is the very limited playtime for the sapphire stylus. Let's face it... customers who buy these players aren't likely to replace the stylus AT ALL. So what they'll do is play until it sounds crappy, and then throw the whole thing away. Which is a shame. Recently on Temu (yah I know, I know LOL) I saw an offer for one cartridge (including diamond stylus) PLUS four more diamond styli for a mere ten Dollars. Aluminum cantilevers. Free shipping worldwide. Insane.

This improvement is unreal. I recently had my 1960s suitcase record player completely rebuilt and it was returned with a ceramic cartridge and I was disappointed as it sounded tinny. I ordered the “GOLD” upgraded stylus and it really did improve the sound. I have a pro turntable in my lounge but use my portable record player more.

I definitely see that they did up the quality. I got a similar Crosley from Walmart a few months back as a player that I ended up putting at my vacation house, and it sounds similarly decent. I've got an Audio Technica pl50 for my component set and a Revolution go as my current main unit since my audio components are currently in storrage but when I spend some time at the vacation place the Crosley that I got sounds good enough and not tinny or hollow.

The Cruiser Plus you got must have the same innerds as the Cruiser Premier i got at Walmart for 44$ and change. Premier might be a Walmart exclusive? I got a Victrola Journey+ signature there too and it has very good sound also. Between them, my ears favor the Victrola. Seems to have more total volume than the Crosley. My Crosley is the opposite of yours. Mine is black with red inside.

So kudos to Crosley for being a pioneer in the vinyl resurgence with Gen Z.

Might be getting thiis for my son. We bought him the Gemini TT 900 for Christmas but that seems to have skipping issues, which is too bad he loves the look of it, we got the red/black one.... but it also sounds really harsh as well, introducing some heavy surface noise not heard on our other record players. So he picked this one out if we do in fact return the Gemini.

Definitely seems to sound much better than that older model. Still not "blow me out of my chair" or "knock my socks off" sounds quality, but a much better listening experience then previous models. May get a marginally better quality if put a better stylus on that thing. That red with the silver accents and white handle does make it look "Christmassey" though. A bit of an overspray where they painted the "Crosley" logo inside the lid. I wonder how the sound of this new Crosley compared to that really nice looking "hunter green" BPO suitcase player you featured on another video a few months ago. May have to go back and watch that one again, but still not the same as a side-by-side comparison.

    • @gimble447

A friend of mine bought one of these about a month ago. We spent the rest of the day playing records. I was quite impressed by how good this unit was, and of course I want to get one now. I did tell him that he should change the needle at least.
The pitch controller is kinda funny how you can have it zero'd out on 33 speed. But crank it up and its playing at 45. So if you got any 16 rpm records kicking around. You can play them. But watch out for 78 speed and cranked to the top. Must be playing at 121 rpm or something.

Just one thing to point out, I've got another turntable (Bush) with the rubber point contacts on the turntable instead of the rubber mat. I've left a record or two on there as it doesn't get used too often (it's bad!) Anyway, whilst there appears to be no damage to the record I can clearly see round marks on the record itself which align with the rubber contacts on the turntable. SO... Always remove your 7" singles from the turntable after use OR sprise out the rubber grips and buy a rubber mat instead :)

Good or bad, these crosleys seem to be the most popular and talked about phono on the internet. I got a Voyager model from my partner as a Christmas Gift so I obviously had to start using it even though I have much better turntables. I don't know what the selling price of this was but obviously it is a budget player and reminds me of the kiddie player I had as a kid in the 1950's. Stylus pressure measured 5 grams, I upgraded to the diamond stylus, speed control is nice so I set it to my strobe, For what it is, ( a budget kiddie player ) I must say the sound is pleasing. From what you are describing in this review video it appears Crosley is responding to consumer concerns about better sound and maybe even more improvements in the future. Thanks for this review showing the improved sound model, For what many are calling a piece of junk, these Crosleys sure are getting a lot of attention from all sides. Maybe everyone should have one LOL.

I wonder if they've realised that ceramic cartridges needs to be fed into a high impedence preamp before the main amp otherwise you get NO bass and it sounds flat/tinny. I'd be interested to know how it sounds with either a Banpa BP2ATC or Vakind P-192D ceramic cartridge fitted with a flip over diamond stylus and metal cantilever instead of the stock plastic cantilever/saphire stylus it came with as just replacing the stylus with a better one can make a remarkable difference.

It's definitely changed sound wise , if you change the cartridge to the flip over cartridge it may sound even better. I have only a handful of 78's so I don't play much of them , I fitted a Sanyo ceramic cartridge that looks like the cheap ceramic cartridge that comes with these record players. It is made in Japan which explains why it sounds better it's called Sanyo MG 05 ceramic cartridge. It came with a plastic stylus but I bought a separate metal diamond stylus. Those cheap ceramic stylus won't fit any more as I tried. £19.99 for the cartridge money well spent!

People spending top dollar on a vinyl record when they could purchase the cd for often less than 1/2 the price should expect decent sound on equipment being sold to play them. Otherwise peoples going to be turned off and think it is all a waste of money. Manufacturers need to realize you never get the opportunity to make a great 1st impression.

  • @CraiginOhioUSA

The bad thing about the Crosley Cruiser is that the company could improve it, but won't. To call it a "gateway" device is to welcome a rip off. There is no acceptable reason as to why this phonograph is so awful. The case it is in, is better than the phonograph. It's sad, that after all these years, the only improvement they have ever made is to add a few cents worth of cardboard material to box in the speakers. Rather than improving the amplifier or speaker, they just added this cheap way of making the sound seem stronger.
This phonograph is unacceptable. This shouldn't be anyone's starting point. The Crosley company could well afford to make these much nicer. Instead, they make it as cheap as they can, and you suggest that if someone wants better, they can upgrade. Why shouldn't this item just be made well enough to be satisfying? Why does Crosley get a pass to sell junk? Why are they not held to a higher standard? Their products are not so inexpensive, that poor quality can be overlooked. Why would anyone think they should just pocket all tbe profits, and never improve this product?
Over the years, I have tried several of these. I want to like them. But- when I touch that heavy arm, with the poorly designed 'lift', and see that cheap little platter weakly revolving at an incorrect speed, my heart always sinks.
I don't think these things serve as a gateway to better pieces of equipment. I think they are only used as a discardable novelty, and after the fun of physically playing a record wears thin, and people realise how hideous the sound is, they junk it, and start streaming. The Crosley is not responsible for any vinyl revival, it's responsible for the increase in digital streaming.

Here is the answer you seek…and I know this due to a very reliable source. The cruiser specifically is targeted toward newbies. Investing in higher end cartridges, platters etc, would not register as important to the newbie considering the impulse buy. But once they get to try vinyl they go onto bigger and better things and Crosley has many very good mid level suitcase and component decks that are a great step up. The cruiser is the only Crosley that doesn’t have a magnetic cart at this point.

I really dig your channel, but not everyone wants to play records on a Chinese-made toy that would be better off in a kids’ room. But we can agree to disagree! Peace.
