I am the parts manager for a Mercedes-Benz , Volvo Cars and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter dealership. We have had a few motors with major oil consumption issues and one of the motors has a factory authorized repair consisting of replacing the piston rings, but using the existing pistons; therefore, we had to clean them. I came across a video showing Chemdip being used to remove all the carbon deposits from the pistons by simply letting them soak. I bought a four gallon can of Chemdip from our local auto parts store and we let them soak overnight. Our technician put the pistons in a large catering pan, filled the pan until the pistons were completely submerged and checked on them the following morning. The Chemdip did barely anything. We ended up using acetone. After spending $100+ I was very disappointed. I don't understand why I see all these videos on how great Chemdip works but we didn't see it in the real world at ALL...now is it possible that our can is really old or something I don't know.
Hi Matt, if you don't want to wait that long, use CRC gasket remover it will remove the carbon , your rods tightened up because all the oil from the pin hole has been removed ,they only have approx 4 tenths of a thou clearance , warm up piston and rod a little ,with butane and oil the wrist pin . Cheers .
Nice piston and rod design great for a street car engine with no valve clearance issues because of excessive cam lift. The dish in the piston could be slightly smaller otherwise pretty good.
This new engine looks awesome. I couldn't do my own & paid to have a used one swapped in. ASE mechanics really don't treat others people's car as good. As their own. Left everything a mess.
Don't forget to let some oil soak into the Piston and Piston pin face....that dip took all the lube....I have been guilty of doing a first fire off and hear a chirp in the first minute or less......the chirp was the Piston swelling for the first time hot and biting into the pin because the hole was dry.....from a ol skool salty, never ever put yer pin in a dry hole and never beat the balls on a bearing because you could not handle your balls being assulted either....
Love the idea for soaking the rods and pistons in the chem dip! Don’t forget to re-lubricate the rod, pin, and piston generously before re-installation... Currently doing exactly the same thing with a replacement 5.3 that had the top ring seized in the groove! Worked out really well. Only problem I’ve run into is the combination of that chem dip and brake clean to remove the chemo dip when done, is softens up and eats the coating on the piston side skirts.

Great vid, thanks! Def will be getting some of that for all rebuilds... But why does everyone hate on seafoam? Theres a difference when u can use something inside the engine and when u have time to tear it apart and dip all parts into it.

Im referring to “seafoaming” where you’re suppose to suck some through a vacuum hose and magically clean up your combustion chambers. Sure it will work as a solvent like anything else, but chem dip doesn’t claim to clean through a mere vaccum hose and running engine.
Um yea sea foam is used on engines that are still an assembly, not a solvent for specific engine parts to be soaked in. That’s like comparing wd40 to epoxy resin.
