The word soccer comes from “association football”. Cos you may not know but the idea of sports was essentially invented in a place called Rugby in the England. And back then most things were named football but had different rules, so when a formal ruleset was made it was called “association football”. So technically the word soccer is just as right as football and was a word made by British people.
