My Toughest Week on the Pacific Crest Trail (Episode 8)

- Episode 8 of my SOBO thru hike of the Pacific Crest Trail takes me through 187 miles over 9 days. After getting around the fire closure, I start making my way to Ashland, Oregon. Then, the rain hits. I have to hike through on and off rain for the entire 9 days, sometimes wondering if I will be able to stay dry enough.
Looking back, this was the hardest week on trail for me. It's sections like these that make sticking out a thru hike extraordinarily tough. I tried to keep myself positive and persevering, but sometimes it was really hard.
But with that being said, even though I shed a decent number of tears, there were also moments of immense joy! I finally got my trail name, made new friends, and hiked along the rim of Crater Lake!
I hope you enjoy joining me!

STORY what a beautiful trail name for you, so befitting 🥾🥾🤗
STORY is the perfect trail name for you! Krysta, your videos are of such a high quality. I feel like I’m watching a professional documentary. I am SO enjoying this series!
Wow, thank you!
My wife has been watching your "shorts", but I want a brand new episode every week! Enjoy your videos a lot.
I watch your videos because you're a good storyteller 😃
It’s a real mixed bag of emotions out there isn’t it? Your Norah Jones moment was beautiful and I’m grateful you shared that very private moment with us.
Love your full length video. Thank you for sharing about the loss of your friend Sam. I find that same connection to my brother when I hike so I understand completely.
Love your trail name❤ I look forward to a new video every Sunday morning. Thank you for sharing your journey, Krista:)
oh my goodness the trail name story is perfect for you! yay! 🎉
Wow , what a fitting trail name. I truly enjoy watching your videos and the stories you tell. You string words together so beautifully 💕
Watched all of your shorts during your trek and now I am really enjoying your long format videos. Well done! Great content.
I’ve loved following your journey through WA & OR (my home state). Your trail name is perfect for you!
I’m so sorry this section was so rough - I’ve sectioned hikes all of Oregon and this is, hands down, one of my favorite sections.
Looking forward to watching your California adventures!
Thank you SO much for sharing your food recipes with us. I really wanted some healthy food for the trail and have not found any packaged food yet. I really did not want to take the time to dehydrate, but I just may give it a shot. Thank you again.
Oh my gosh, STORY is truly the perfect trail name for you! I love that so so much!
Love it, Excellent!!!! Thank you...
Story. I love it!
I just stumbled across your channel. I like the format you chose, I like how you filmed and I particularly like how you share your emotions and how you explain things. Big kudos, well done. I look forward to catching up with the whole series.
yay! new uploads are so exciting. I'm hiking the JMT this year and your videos help keep me motivated!!
Hi Story! I love how real watching your videos is. I know what it’s like to run out of food and have my blood sugar drop too low, and it’s scary. I’m glad you were able to stay safe. Your trail name is amazing!
Thank you!!
Krista. On my 2 nd video of yours. First one was #7 and this one. Wishing you strength & perseverance. And the best elements each day. I'm really enjoying your videos. Stay strong 🌄
Thank you so much!
I’ve just discovered your channel today and have really enjoyed the sobo trip! I haven’t watched, and won’t watch bc of spoilers, the short form content but I am enjoying these longer videos. I live in SW Washington and grew up next to Mt Hood so I love the sections through there so much.
It has been several years since I backpacked or even hiked regularly. In 2019 I did the Timberline Trail with a friend. Last year I decided I wanted to venture back out to the Timberline Trail to test myself with solo backpacking. I got hit with the same terrible heatwave mid-August on some incredibly exposed areas of the mountain and it was TOUGH! I am glad to have seen you at least had some shaded areas but like you, I also had a long stretch without water and ran out until the following morning.
Glad you’re enjoying my videos!! Sounds like quite the adventure! The timberline trail is sooo nice. Amazing you got out solo!
Thank you so much for sharing this video and about your beautiful friend … I’m so sorry for that loss.
I do love that you got your trail name … Story is perfect! Thank you again for taking us along, Krysta and I’m looking forward to your next video🤍
Thank you 💜💜💜
Another great video, Krysta👏👏, the story of your friend and her love for Nora Jones felt so meaningful. And, your trail name, Story, is just perfect. Your strength during this tough section was evident. Thanks, for posting your amazing videos and sharing your “Story” with the world!!!😄🥾
Superb and stunning shots
Crater Lake reminded me of a favorite saying: "the sun shines on the righteous."
Your vlogs have some of the most picturesque shots! And I love that you got a trail name, thank you for sharing with us!
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks for watching 🥰
Story, I REALLY appreciate the way you share this hike. I feel like I'm along for the ride. Also, I cannot wait to see your organizational episode coming up. I'm a broke backpacker who dehydrates all my own meals and often sleeps in my car at trailheads or wears and uses all thrifted gear so it's SO beautiful to see someone else dehydrating her own food. I feel seen. I see so many thru hikers eating Mountain House meals and there's no way I could afford them nor would they work with my food allergies. Thanks for sharing the way you do things. I'll be staying tuned all the way to Mexico.
Yay I’m so glad you enjoy my videos!! I hope you enjoy next episode with more resupply details. I love having my own meals for all the reasons you listed! 💜
What a beautiful story this video was! The name suits you perfectly! I'm so very sorry about your friend. She was way too young. Thank you for sharing your very tender personal stories. They are in dearing and demonstrate your lovely spirit.
💜💜💜
Love your trail name!
Omg that lake view is AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL AND BREATHTAKING. I would love to camp 🏕️ there just fall asleep and wake up to that view. Thank for sharing your experience. I love your trail name “story” because it suits you. You are sharing your amazing story with us and I appreciate ❤❤
Loved your candor and honesty! Felt like we were there right beside you walking along!
Story 💫 You are so inspiring!
Thank you so much!!
Despite how tough these 9 days were for you, I would say this episode was the most outstanding yet. They've all been so professionally presented but this one in particular topped them all. Love your trail name - hope you keep it for future thru-hikes - it really suits you! Thanks for sharing your very personal story about the loss of such a dear friend. I, too, am a Norah Jones fan. So glad her music brought your heart once again to her memory. As for the cold soak noodles - that tells me how truly hungry you must have been! Yuk!
💜💜💜
Love the name Story!! Suits you.
Great video. Thank you
Trail name perfect
Thanks for sharing about your friend. Sweet memories. Great thing about hiking is where your mind travels to.
Greetings from Japan! Enjoying your videos immensely! I was born and raised in Northern California and had family in the Owens Valley at Independence, so am eager to see your episodes about my old stomping grounds. Thank you for sharing!
Glad you’re enjoying!! Thanks for watching!
I enjoy your videos very much! You 1000000% inspire me!
Congrats on your trail name, I love it ❤!
Thanks for sharing.......I'm enjoying "being" there as you hike along. Good job Story!
Glad you enjoyed it!
And that's a great trail name 😊
glad I'm not the only one who struggles with my cnoc 18:55
We were in Jacksonville, near Ashland, a couple weeks before this and holy cow, the smoke was INSANE. I can't imagine hiking in that!
Yes I like your Kind to tell your Story of your pct. STORY is the perfect teail name for you.
So glad u had views at Crater Lake
It's more likely that what you heard was coyotes instead of wolves.
It would be wonderful if you could do a video and share some of your dehydrated recipes 😊 They look delicious. Love your videos!
Will do! In the meantime my recipes are on my website krystanorwick.com
My husband and I love following your journey. I was looking for the link to your dehydrated meals as you noted but don't see it. Would love to start dehydrating for future planned long hike.
Story, I found another link to your dehydrated meals, thanks !
Check out krystanorwick.com and they are my most recent blog posts
Hello, maybe I missed it…any advantages hiking SOBO compared to NOBO? Appreciate your input, thanks in advance. Great video
I'm surprised you don't have a pot cozy which will keep the heat in and rehydrate your food much quicker. I also start to rehydrate my food for dinner in a container a couple of hours before to make it even quicker.

❤... just a question... is your sternum strap comfortable that far down? I usually see them two finger widths down from the collar bone area...😊
I think I adjusted it further up later on in my hike for this exact reason!
You don't have a sleeping bag in Sept. South bound😮.
She has a sleeping bag. She just talked about upgrading to a warmer bag sooner than she had planned.
Those berries….do you know what they were? Are they edible?
I don’t know actually!
So much for a continuous foot path. You should have walked around the closure. I know it's your hike and actually walking the whole way isn't really important to a lot of people if there is a closure. It seems to be enough to justify just skipping a section and hitching around it.
