It's very simple. Gio needs to go on a loan to 1. FC Köln. They are one of the biggest clubs in Germany, but got hit with a transfer ban which decimated the roster. Their transfer ban ends in January. They are currently in seventh position in the German 2nd Division, but only two points out of first.
Gio can play the second half of the season with Köln, score a lot of goals, and get his confidence up. He will be loved in Cologne if he gets them promoted. He could then stay or ride off into the sunset.

I would like to see Gio Reyna pull off a McKennie - that is, prove all the doubters wrong, earn a starting spot at Dortmund and become one of their key players. A healthy Gio Reyna is definitely capable of that. I watched the "Giovanni Reyna vs Barcelona 11/12/24" highlights on RUclips and he was making great passes left and right.

  • @pianosopher

As a Dortmund fan, idk if now is the right time to go. Terzić didn't play him, but this past game vs Barça was the first time he's been healthy under Şahin. Yes, Brandt's injury was a big factor, but honestly between Brandt and Malen being as inconsistent as they've been the past couple years, this might be his opportunity to establish himself

  • @Heavenatwork
    @Heavenatwork 3 часа назад +1

Here’s what non-USMNT fans see: he was promising when very young; the special talents he started out with (Sancho, Bellingham, Haaland) have moved on to better things in high transfers; since then EVEN when fit multiple independent managers leave him on the bench or regularly out of the team all together; he best performs for the USMNT and then only against CONCACAF opposition; he is a luxury player but not special enough relative to his competition (there is already the next generation of 10 in the wings at BVB; sentiment aside, most objective people would draw different conclusions from this record; it’s absurd to claim that he needs some mythical‘Goldilocks’ conditions to be able be the player you think he is… Pulisic is what your special talent looks like and he’s had injuries too…

Most of the clubs that people are listing are completely unrealistic because almost exclusively, the clubs that get aggressive in January are clubs that have to: they're either a) underperforming expectations or b) have significant injuries to specific positions. Most of the clubs people are mentioning don't need Gio, need someone with more potential than Gio, or can't afford Gio, so to mention them is sort of silly.
PSV doesn't need Gio enough to drop the coin on him. They have two players who are good at the 10 and they will win the league with them. Why would they buy him? PSV is not going to break the bank when they're cruising to victory in the league.
AC Milan doesn't need Gio. Who is he going to displace? Reijnders? No. Pulisic? No. AC Milan need a 9, a RB, and possibly another CB. 10 is not their weak point.
Calls for him to go to MLS are absolute madness.
Just because we would want someone to go somewhere, that doesn't mean that the club is going to see it through red, white, and blue glasses. They look out for themselves and themselves only. They have to need him and they have to be able to afford him and Dortmund is not going to allow him to go for pennies because he is young and has crazy potential. Dortmund will be looking for a team that is desperate for a 10 and will be willing to pay more than transfer market says he's worth.
Personally, I take the start in the UCL as a good sign and think he should fight for minutes at Dortmund and if he gets them, great. If not, then explore a summer transfer. If he didn't get this start and it was still the same story there as it has been, I'd be more open to a January loan.

I mean, he literally just turned 22 a month ago. He's years away from being a "bust". In reality, he's more one of those unfortunate stories of a player that was talented, but couldn't stay healthy. It happens in sports all the time.
It's not like when he does play he isn't good enough, he clearly looks like he belongs out there, he just literally can't stay healthy and get on the field.

    • @daviddinwiddie9253

He's consistently one of the 2-3 best US players every time he puts on a US jersey. He was putting up consistently good club performances at a top 15 club in the world, until injuries made him unreliable. Still doesn't look out of place when he does get minutes. He's clearly not a bust, just needs to find a coach who feels he's the best fit. It's similar to Dest at Barcelona or Pulisic at Chelsea. You're not a bust just because a coach with a lot of good options thinks one of the other good options is a better fit.

Here’s my squad where I feel Reyna could contribute on. ManU.
They loaned away Sancho and are currently struggling, so they definitely could be on the hunt for talent.
They have an odd formation (3-6-1?), but he could pair alongside Bruno Fernandes in the center to create an attacking pair.
This might also be dependent on how they much they value Alejandro Garnacho as I feel that is the player Reyna will most be competing with.
But certainly the results haven’t been too great for that club so far. Perhaps switching from him to Reyna could be the boost they need

Let’s be honest: Gio Reyna needs to make a step back and come to a team where he can be a top player rather than going to someplace and just be a cog in the wheel. Mallorca certainly makes sense in that respect. And while PSV is one of the biggest players on a half-step down, maybe a move to France or one of the “fallen giants” of the 2 Bundesliga could also work. Gio becoming a hero to the fans at Hertha or Hamburg would possibly lift his profile and confidence enough to make him the player he could be if the cards play out.
