I think it might have been Weingartner who complained about conductors who played By the Brook as if the brook ran with molasses.

That was fun! When you played that little sample from the Pastoral Symphony, I thought we were all in church. Almost sounds like it was recorded at the wrong speed, not that I'm suggesting it was.

The bit of the second movement of the Beethoven-Liszt "Pastoral" Symphony reminded me of a review of Frank Sinatra and Perry Como in the 1940's. The critic complained that "they sing so slowly I want to grab them and push them on to the next word."

A very fair and accurate review! By the way, there's a really fine box from Decca of Liszt's complete original (in other words, non-transcription) solo works by the late France Clidat. If you can find this set at a reasonable price it's well worth investigating.

I agree, but the sound production is disappointing.

Wow! That Pastoral andante! Ponderous, like a first read through, trying to play all the notes. Do you think he let his 6 year old grandson jump in on the recording?
BTW, one of your most entertaining rants!!

I love the pastoral, but if someone put that on I would have to hurt someone.

Poor Liszt, always a down side. (But I think you're doing a great job pinpointing what is and is not to like in his music). Btw, I nominate Handel's Italian Cantatas, cond by Bonizzoni, as a most important Ever project. Not only is it rapturously beautiful but I think it makes the case for Handel as a composer for voice more than do his opera and oratorio recordings.

Already made a video about it, but I was considering bringing it up again. I agree with you.

Glenn Gould recording of the Pastoral transcription lasts more than 55 minutes…
