At 1:22 when you look into the collapsed opening. Is that somebody there with you standing in the opening or what? I can see a set of glowing eyes and it looks like they turned around. Or is that something else?

The round things on the shelf that you mentioned have a powder in them are the remains of dry cell batteries. They were used with an induction coil to create a spark for the Fairbanks Morse engine sitting there.

Great video. All of the miners who worked there have passed on and now are forgotten by many. But their work will live on in video form as long as this video is here. It's hard to imagine how hard they worked in the darkness day after day. They were the generation that made America

@@TVRExploring My first attempt at mine photography was using a Pentax 67 medium format film camera and a steel Bogen tripod. Lee and I repelled to the bottom of the Waterman mine while I had a ton of photography gear on my back. After that I bought a Nikon D700 and a carbon fiber tripod. I love painting with light. I haven't been out in years. It breaks my heart, but its cool to see videos like this.

My 2x grandfather I found his death certificate on Ancestry and it says he died due to a fall in a mine in 1908 in Pennsylvania. My Mom's father, his father (my 1x great grandfather) he also worked in the coal mines in Pennsylvania for 44 years and some of his sons my great uncles were also miners. So to see these tours is really fascinating.

Also you're not clicking a supplemental flash light on and off and pointing it down the mine every five or so steps.. Appreciate the bright lite so we can see everything. Not sure what you did but the tapping noise has stopped. Very enjoyable. Keep up the good work.

15:12 The Ore Car My work Mate and I' I suppose we were Foolish in Many ways: we were working on the Haulage where we'd Bring in Supplies for the Face; They'd be emptied at the Face where then the Trams would have to be taken back to the Junction of which would be about Half Mile down the track; The Tram would be Unhooked from the Haulage engine and Like Crazy Fools as we were ; we'd ride the tram down an incline: the Incline at times would go down the Incline and then Up onto the Brow of a Hill; where the Tram would slow down as it reached the Brow but then at the Top dead centre of the brow it would Gradually Pick up speed: The speed would gather up to about 25 Miles an hour for about two hundred Yards where then there'd be a Sharp Corner ; we'd Bank ourselves to the Left of the tram to Prevent the Wheels from Lifting up from off the Rails; Once we got around the Bend it was a Straight Incline for a quarter of a Mile; and as there was No Junctions the Tram would now Pick up speed to no less that 30 M p h ; At the Bottom of the Incline we had Made our own Buffer; This Buffer consisted of Quarter Filled Sacks of Rubble that was Placed between the Track then there would be Half Filled Sacks of Rubble Placed between the Track and then Full Sacks of Rubble The quarter Filled Sacks would Slide under the Axle of the Tram Gradually slowing the Tram down and then the Half Filled Sacks of Rubble would Slow the Tram even slower until Finally the Tram would come to a comfortable but jerky Stop That Journey from the Face took us Twenty Minuets to get to the Bottom; where as if we had walked Down it would have taken a Good Hour : At Times when we were Nearing the Corners and then Finding that the Roof Level was rather Low as we Passed under; we'd Look at each other where I'd ask him if he was going to Jump off the Tram as it Gathered what I considered to be Too Fast after all 30 M P H is awful fast if the car had jumped off the road and Hit the Jagged Rocks that were Jutting out from the side: When I asked My workmate if he was going to Jump off the Tram: He looked at Me and said Yea if you Dare Jump off First Both of us were so Frightened to Jump off the Tram we Just Sat there and watched the Upright Metal Struts flash By Us; Every Strut was spaced about every four Meters which would take less than two seconds to reach the next where every eleven Foot of the tram Rail would make that clicking sound every second as the wheels ran over the next Rail; I'm 70 Years old Now and was wondering if I'd Like to Go Back to the Mine and do the same thing when I was only 22 ?? Yea Why Not

6:07 It's Not a Gas Engine Gas Engines give of Carbon Monoxide ! This Engine would be Powered by Compressed Air : as I am sure you will have seen that there is a Pipeline running throughout the tunnel I Used to work one of those Machines Down the Mine within Yorkshire England; The Problem with those engines they gave off Lots of Noise and Blew a Lot of Dust into the Air: Sometimes the Compressor would Be within the workings where air would be Pumped in at Rapid Speed; where Condensation would Fill up within the Pipeline and if the Condenser Valve was not Turned on as the Compressor was shut off when the work was finished Water within the Machine could Freeze over and therefore crack the Cylinder The Machine Has A Tail Rope Drum the Rope or Cable would be wrapped around it just like a Fishing Reel. This would mean that Gravity would Lower the Cable to the Bottom: One would have to either Use Brute Strength to Lower the Rope or cable down the Incline or if there was a Tram Fastened to the Cable, the weight of the Tram would produce the Gravity to lower the Wire Rope; These Machines were Dangerous because they were difficult to Control; Often the Brake Shoes would wear away; this would prevent the Brake from Gripping Hard onto the Drum as it was on its decline Decent People at the Bottom of the Incline should Keep Ears and Eyes Open because these Tail Ropes came down Fast when there was the heavy weight of a Tram Shackled Many Miners Have had their Legs Cut Clean off or worse still Killed; I was a Regular Windy Driver {Windy was the Names we Gave them due to them blasting Cold Compressed Air from out of the drum} What I Used to Do with the Wire Rope I'd Have My Work Mate Ride the Flat Car as I'd Lower him to the Bottom of the incline ; There within Reach of the Flat Car was a Bell Pull . He'd stop Me; where then I'd Wrap some Different Coloured Tapes around the Wire Rope the Incline was two Hundred Yards at a 45 degree Incline where then it levelled for about twenty feet where there was Just a Solid wall; I'd Put White Yellow and Red Tape onto the rope At fifty Yard intervals The Yellow tape was to tell me to Put the Brake on slowly as I reached the Bottom and the Red tape would tell me that I was On the Level; This would be where then I'd apply the Handbrake; It was Illegal for Me to Lower Workmen down the Incline But Nevertheless Men would ask me to Lower them Down the 200 Yards to the Bottom: I'm not Bragging But Those Men Trusted Me where I'd Lower them to the Bottom; I would always assure them that I Knew that the Car would Pick up Speed but they Need not worry as I Knew exactly where to Apply the Brake ; But One Day I was sent onto another District to work another Haulage Engine: The Guy who Had Never worked on a Gravity Tail Rope Engine before Lowered the Men down within the Flat bed Car . The Car Picked up Speed ; One of the Men Panicked and Believed the Flat bed was going too Fast and without having thought for his Fellow Man He pushed off this Guy where he Fell in front of the Flat Bed and of course the Wheel sliced off his Ankle

Great video. I, like the others, appreciate the extra time you take with the machinery as I also love the old stuff. The stills are a nice touch.

13:27 - In all seriousness, what was up with the swinging chain? Seismic activity?

    • @carlmarcs3647

I noticed it too... but isn’t it strange that the camera cuts just before he turns to see it, and he goes “so if we turn around”, and slowly turns, giving maybe someone enough time to swing the chain and get out of shot... just a thought.

@@carlmarcs3647 It's been so long, I had to go back and refresh my memory on this. I don't really think anyone had time to get out of that shot. Either someone set the chain in motion, came back to where the guy was filming and then remained behind him during the next "scene," or it was seismic activity. The first seems plausible, except for the fact that the chain was swinging pretty significantly. I'd be more in favor of a seismic causation, but it seems that it would have been a strong enough event that the guys would have mentioned it.
Either way, I'm still curious. I'm sure there is a rational explanation; there always is. 👍
