    Couldn't agree more with your logic, boat porn is dangerous and I can also see why brokers get pissed, I'm in the market for a monohull full keel blue water cruiser around the 37' range, I'm looking at hull condition, osmosis, through hulls, chain plates etc. I don't care about the inside of the boat, except what's hidden, steering quadrant and cables, rudder bearings, sea water intake and exhaust connections and corrosion from standing sea water, mast and boom condition, standing rigging deck hardware, house batteries and solar, nav equipment, windex, depth sounder etc. The inside layout is easy to rebuild and customizable. Through hull failures will sink a boat quick chop, and the next worst is rudder failure. Good advice

    • @thelastpirate
      @thelastpirate  5 лет назад +1

      I didn't got into it that far but this is really good advice. Pinned.

    • @jonnorousseau3096
      @jonnorousseau3096 5 лет назад +1

      Example, if a through hull fails before your valve and you don't have a bung attached with a lanyard to the fitting you've basically lost your boat, this is why NC (non corrosive) or non dezincification (DZF) fittings are preferable. Deck cores and mast steps, be it keel or deck are other areas of concern, a lot of people buying boats are inexperienced, and cannot do their own maintenance. I'd say unless you are familiar with EVERY SYSTEM on your boat don't attempt to sail across oceans, and make sure you have simple and safe systems in place for 2nd and 3rd reefs, can heave to, can do celestial navigation and have a knot line. The GGR boats as an example are all 33' to 38' full keel boats, wind vein is mandatory as is a sextant and the sailors must be proficient in jury rigging a mast or steering using whisker and spinnaker poles. Good storm tactics eliminate injury and damage to the boat, I'm blessed to crew on an Alexander Simonis designed Robertson and Caine custom built 1995 64' retired Cape to Rio ocean racer SV WARRIOR, and with a boom 9 metres long an uncontrolled gybe at 17 knots boat speed would be seriously dangerous, she is an open cockpit ocean racer with twin interlinking pedestal grinders, 13ST cockpit winches ranging from Lewmar 77 3 speed primaries to dedicated traveller and running backstay winches, obviously not your average boat, but you learn very quickly how dangerous things can be in 25 knots true wind with huge sail areas, she can fly a spinnaker, genoa/jib, staysail and main

    Hey sailors! I know wood is cheeper and it is strong, but Klegecell, Divinycell vinyl cell foam is longer lasting, lighter and stronger than wood. Catamarans are so weight sensitive it really a much better way to go. I know it’s much more expensive, but really it’s the only way to go! The weight of the wood will kill the performance of the cat. Just work the hell out of your day jobs and buy the foam!!! Best of luck!

    James & Kimmi, I really think you should get another catamaran even though they cost more than a monohull. You could purchase a nice one and make payments but you would have to post more cool videos like you do to afford the payments. You can do it I know you can. There's got to be someone lightweight catamaran out there made of composit material that you could strike up a deal with the owner. I love your videos and want to see you back out on the water again and soon as well as post all your footage of South America which you haven't posted yet. Your videos are what brings you in that RUclips cash so the more you post, the more you make to afford another boat.

    What an undertaking..... I wouldn't, but I did, in 1988 when I bought my boat, which had sunk and had been salvaged. I was working on the boat in my yard, not anchored in the bay, (big difference). I wish him luck but projects like this, (unless he has unlimited funds, time and ability), end up abandoned at the boatyard. If you can, way better to spend the 60K, even then look at the amount of work that James did to get it ready and continues to do, but at least the boat is usable.

    My first concern would be moorage. Cats are cool, but it only fits on a finger pier end, otherwise you need 2 side by side slips. Next concern would be an adequate anchor. Due to increased free board surface she needs an oversize and a secondary. You know your financial situation and can take it from there.

    Would I pay $5k for that Spindrift? Yes, I would, yes it's in rough shape,..it wouldn't be 5 grand if it wasn't, but with a lot of work..and you better work and then work some more on project like that, then throw more money at it(motors, rigging, sails, etc.) than you thought possible, you would come out with a boat not only by your own hand(and it would only make sense if you planned on doing much of it yourself) but also a boat worth a good deal of money. You could also customize many elements the way You'd like it..and that is worth even more. Hope this finds you two well J&K, and that back on the boat w/the supplies you've gathered is now going better than ever.

    A few pointers for catamaran buyers. First, until about 20 years ago multihull sailing was largely the domain of eccentrics, outcasts, non-conformists and more than a few very green novices. The advent of quality cruising catamarans built primarily in France and South Africa has largely dispelled that aura but plenty of "characters" remain, many of them very poorly informed. Problem is that many of their off-the-wall boats are out there too, waitng for another hopeful dreamer to buy them. There are a lot of scows out there so here are a few guidelines.
    First, the vertical bridge clearance, that is the distance between the underside of the bridgedeck and the water, should be no less than 5.6% of length over all. ex. 50' catamaran should have at least 2'9" between the water and the underside of the bridgedeck/cabin. This is an absolute minimum. Multiply this vertical clearance times 2 to get the point at which you start slamming the tops off waves. i.e. If the clearance from water to bottom of cabin is 3' you will not start slamming into waves until the waves build to a height of 6'. Buoyancy is critical in a multihull. Narrow hulls may for reduced capacity. They also make engine maintenance very difficult in boats with engines in the amas. Narrow hulls do not necessarily make for faster boats. that is an old myth. Total wetted surface, hull entry and exit are more important. Jim Wharram liked sharp narrow hulls because they gave his boats some lateral resistance but they also gave them a deeper draft for a given weight.

    I enjoy your videos and especially looking at your gf I need to add some comments. I will not belabor this but the Prouts you are looking at are notorious for rot in the akas (crossmembers). This is especially true in the Iroquois. Prout made long plywood boxes which they covered with fiberglass. Catamarans work a lot and the akas made with this technique have not stood the test of time. There are many of these boats still out there sailing but they are often unsafe because of aka deterioration.
    That 39 Privilege you refer is a very poor design. I sailed one in the Bahamas for four weeks and another two in the Keys. It has a hot, poorly laid out interior, and the helmsman was out in the open.
    Regarding glass over plywood catamarans in general, I confess the most fun I ever had with a boat was a modified 30' Wharram. We kept the boat in Key Largo for ten years and used it for local fishing and diving. A great fun boat at low cost. We never went more than 30 miles form our dock but in the Keys there is no need. These boats do require careful maintenance and a knowledgeable owner., but they are simple, cheap, and a great fishing and diving platform. For the novices reading this, remember multihulls are very weight sensitive. You can detract from their sailing characteristics and even make them unsafe with too much weight improperly distributed.

    Tayana from 69k to 35K? Is it logical to offer half of the price when negotiating? Could you please make another video about how to negotiate when buying a boat? Because there are lots of people who have no idea and dreaming a sailboat like me. Btw I ve just scubscribed. I wish all the best for you guys.

    Liked the vid, and LIKED the vid. I'm sticking with my coastal-cruising mono for now, but expect to look for a blue water cat in 5-8 years --- maybe by sailing my boat down to Mexico to look for a nice deal on a capable cat that someone didn't want to pound North. Loved the German ad at 11:00!

    Try looking at Craigslist or just talking to marinas. Lots of nice boats that people don't have the time or health to keep up.

    No, I wouldn't pay 5k for that boat is because there's not any cool sharks painted on it. But seriously, the real reason I wouldn't is because I honestly prefer monohulls to cats. I actually don't even enjoy watching cat sailing channels, you guys are the only channel that I watch that sails a cat, and it's less about the sailing but more about your awesome personalities. I moved back home with my mom and dad to save money so so can finally afford my own sailboat to go cruisingbon. I hope I get to meet you and Jimmy out there some day 💖

    If I had the money for making repairs OR had all the time in the world AND knew wtf I was doing to make solid DIY repairs -- yes. Otherwise, no. I suspect the whole point of buying a project boat like this is to rebuild her with your own hands, so I hope your guy has what it takes. I am curious to see what happens next. Good luck!

    It would
    Cost more than 5k to dispose of it or have some body salvage it from the bottom when it sinks , I get the dream but I think that ones to far gone .

    You can get free boats on Craigslist all the time. Some of them even come with the trailer. I don’t think they’re in any worse condition then this one.

    Send that boat down to your friends in Mexico. The ones that refurbished your boat, James. Turnkey to beautiful condition for probably....... 15 grand.

    The old ww2 PT boats were all plywood and they took a hell of a beating and stood up to it.

    • @edwiser3547
      @edwiser3547 5 лет назад

      This is a popular misconception. WWII PT boats made in US and UK were double planked mahogany with a layer of canvas in between. The planks were laid diagonally. Only the deck and deckhouse were plywood.

    Thank you for this video! I have been wondering what are the best websites to search for boats. I'm still trying to sort my finances and saving... But I'm working toward my dream. Gonna sail off into the sunset one day! 😊 Thank you! And happy sails!
