Excellent video simon saw my first ever kingfisher today on the canal in chadderton god the move quick didn't get a shot of it but now I know were it is I will get set up with a brew and wait it out thanks for the videos I've learnt a lot all the best Andy
Great video, thumbs up and subscribed from me. I went to the coast last Saturday morning, there at 0530 as I'd seen a Kestrel hovering last weekend whilst out with the kids. Carried my tripod, gimbal and 500/4 for hour and a half up and over steep cliffs and saw nothing. Got back home, sst on the drive for a minute pondering if I should take my gear in now or later. As I was a bit tired I opted for later. Walked in through the side gate and heard a commotion, a Jay making a right racket. Next thing a Buzzard went for the Jay dispersing it from its perch, a Green Woodpecker was calling loudly close by too, the Jay countered and they had a bit of a go before going their separate ways. Lasted for a minute, no time to get my gear from the car 😒 Typical, all the action happening 20m from my back door...............
Thanks for the sub, yeh its usually the case things not going to plan. Would have been a result getting the Buzzard going for the Jay!! Better luck next time eh👍🏼👀📷
Cracking stuff Simon great set up, glad that cow did'nt demolish your perch. Awesome images well deserved for all the effort you put into it. Take care.
Hi Simon excellent work it always comes to the ones who wait I've had the same trouble with horses I didn't have much room on the riverbank the hide halfway on the bank and halfway in the water at about 4:30 he he flew on to his perch above the river lining up my shot the horses came down to the shallow for a drink and walk straight past the camera and me at 7 in the morning I finally got what I was looking for . And thank you for all the videos in the past
wonderful, really enjoyed that. just starting out with bird photography. have sat in a hide for hours waiting for my favourite bird and never thought of actually putting a perch there instead of trying to find a likely one.
Another Great Video Simon must admit spat my drink out when you mentioned the hole in your wellies!! Sound is excellent never missed a word Thanks Again :)
Great stuff Simon 👍. Haha those cows lol would have looked well if it had fallen off the banking and landed on the hide 🤨. Cracking images and good to see the chair hide doing the business too. The early bird gets the worm n all that 🙂👍. Catch ya soon, Rick
Another great film Simon, I loved your new crew that joined you that day. Your one lucky man for staying in an area that has so many photo opportunities.
A really enjoyable watch again Simon. You just never know what to expect with wildlife photography and I certainly didn’t expect the entrance of the big beast. Really funny moment.
A SUPER video Simon, I enjoyed every minute of it. Your planing is spot on and thanks for showing a lovely bird that you dont see much of in the city. Take care.
Awesome video again Si , enjoyed every one of them . Great to see and hear you again , your passion is always an inspiration . Looking forward to the next one !
Loved the Vlog Simon, nightmare when the Cow arrived, lol.. I’m really looking forward to testing out my Rhode Wireless Go but still waiting for my media mod on my GoPro! Sound on yours was really good, clear and a good range, nice pictures too. Keep up the good work 👍. All the best R :-)
Thanks Richard, yeh i was getting a bit twitchy the closer it got. Theyre a big old lump!! When you get the mic, have a play around with the gain to get the best out of it . I bought a lavalier mic to go with it and the first night out with it I got the lead snagged on something and the Rode mic that was clipped on my belt fell off into the long grass. It took me half an hour to find it, I felt sick. Up to now Ive not used the lavalier as the lead gets in the way a bit.Im going to make a belt pouch to put the Rode in and try again. Good luck with it, theyre a great bit of kit. Cheers Si 👍🏼📷👀
@@simoneardley I bet you were, lol... I've had a few close encounters but thankfully came out of it alright! And cheers for the info regarding the Rode Mic setup, I thought I'd leave the Lavalier Mic for the while until I see how it performs without, the Mic Muffs that come with it look like they fall off a bit easily, will need some testing to see whats works best. Cheers for now, Richard:-)
Hey Simon, I am a bit late to the game on commenting on your video... Fantastic sign you created! Looks like it's very old and a fine place for the Kingfisher to hunt from! I am sure you had a great time making it and the thoughts of your childhood. What a fun video! Funny, I had a very similar time with cows in an area I photograph as well..... I think they wanted screen time in your video as well. I'm looking forward to your next adventure! Sayin' hey.... Greg
Thanks Greg, surprising what images stick in your mind from childhood . It was either recreate the kingfisher or that tennis girl scratching her arse!! You know the one😂😂 Cows can be a pain sometimes, they just dont take the hint. All the best Si👍🏼📷
Cracking stuff love that idea of the perches. I think I have a place for that down here. Very similar type of location to that. Lovely images and informative as ever
Loving the new perch, Private fishing is a bit over done! But certainly effective enjoyed the video. Seen a few cows in videos recently, just don't under estimate them they are big beasts not to be messed with! Great stuff thanks for sharing !
Very entertaining. I did a similar mod to my chair hide although I used some stick on velcro patches. I don't like velcro much though and those hooks looked a good idea. Cows can be a right pain. That one was certainly taking the piss! I have a new location for some badger images at a sett that is on the edge of a field but unfortunately at the moment there is a small herd of young bullocks in there. They just won't leave you alone so I'm having to postpone until they are out of there. The sound seems fine and once again some really nice images. All the best.
Love your videos Simon and so good to know I'm not the only one who goes scratting about in the woods for bits of interesting timber. After my experience with little owls and bullocks destroying my perch I can fully sympathise, I thought it only happened to me!! Cracking shots mate👍
Nice one Simon a good down to earth lancashire lad, have just subscribed and enjoyed your garden video. Hey and this from a Yorkshire lad, whatever next ?
Superb Simon! Such a passion, great stuff mate. I'm currently working with the resident kingfisher here, just subscribed to your channel. Keep the vids coming mate
Hi Simon, Just come across your videos, I love them and have subscribed. Got my first kingfisher shots last year, you always want your next ones. Sound quality was good. I like how you explain everything in detail and give tips...😎👍
Another great realistic film. Great advice on the hooks for the hide, i bought one after watching your review but was using bulldog clips for the scrim which was a faff. I was out last night setting up kingfisher perches and ive decided i need waders 🙄
Thanks Mark, glad you enjoyed it. Yeh, the hooks seem to work well and theyre only small. I need some new waders too, mine are leaking along with my wellies !!😩
Simon watch loads of your films I always give you a thumbs up I’ve never subscribed my apologies I have now you seem like a fantastic guy and you are certainly good at what you do when Spire to be half as good as you thanks so very much for sharing I love all the time and effort you put into making it work thank you❤
I've seen the sign image my self, it was given to me on a birthday card once.. Great to see you recaptured it perfectly. Nice one Simon. I've only just discovered your channel and you've got another sub from me, great content.. Thank you for sharing 👍🇬🇧
Great vid Si only wish I could find somewhere like that been looking for 3 months but only get fleeting glimpses still patience is the game and with your help I will get there only a beginner but learning loads from your vids cheers mate. Stay safe. ps the one man hide should be perfect 😂 and the the cow was after the fig biscuits obviously 😂 👍
The figs are going in a sealed container from now on !!!! Good luck with your search, it will pay off in the end. Look for the most likely fishing spots, nice calm water, signs of fish etc and they'll turn up👍
wow what a snap!! I live by a rhine and managed to see a kingfisher and took a couple of snaps but was through my lounge window so nothing like yours Any trips on a perch we can put in or by the rhine would be grateful as I love taking photographs of all the beatuiful birds in our garden and surrounding area Robins ,great tits ,blue tits long tail tits kestrals ,buzzards herons, black birds and we even have deer . Thanks keep safe regards Mary & Gerald
Awsome shots Simon i remember years ago having a poster like that on my bog door ,i had a pop out tonight mainly to see a long billed dowitcher as I'd herd its been up my way for the past week but couldn't get out weather was a bit rubbish but i spotted it straight away and it took off didn't even have time to check my settings but managed an in flight shot it wasn't great lol but glad i made the effort to go out .looking forward to your next vid Andy from Cumbria 👍
That was brilliant, well done mate. I managed to get my first shot of a Kingfisher just last week. I was doing a Landscape Photography vlog when my son saw it go shooting past. I only had a 70-200mm on me but managed to get some handheld shots so I will have to go back with my 150-500mm and my hide. I was so surprised though at how they didn't seem to bothered about people, not as skittish I though it would be. People walking past and with animals and he was quite happy with it. Anyhow great vlog really enjoyed it 👍🏼👍🏼
The sound quality was excellent Simon - great clarity. Well done in getting your images due to great planning and plenty of patience. I might have legged it if that had been me in the hide when the cow turned up. Me and cows don't get on. I got cornered once in a field in Blackburn and got electrocuted 4 times trying to get away by ducking under the electric fence. I think it affected by third party battery grip on my D500 as it started crashing my camera just after that. The chairhide looks to be a game changer by the way.
Believe me Gary i wasn't for off bailing out!!Yeh theyre a bit too inquisitive are cows for my liking!! The chairhide is a good bit of kit and cheap too.👍
Hi Simon, my first visit to your channel and really enjoyed it. Congratulations on your planning it worked just great, mind I did think the cow was going to join you in the hide at one point. By the way I thought the sound was first class very clear. I was also impressed with your hide never seen one like that before. Good luck with future shoots.
Back of the net, Simon! 👌🏻 Cows, eh? I too have had a herd traipsing through a river whilst trying for kingfishers - nightmare! By the way, audio was great. I have the Rode Go mics and they are superb, very versatile.
Loving watching your videos, Simon. I'm from Lancaster originally but not live in northern Thailand and am just getting into bird photography - cheers for the inspiration 👍
Fantastic! Loved the cow scene. That was so funny. Question though? did you swear to yourself, when it stood right in the way of the shot? I also love how you get so excited over a homemade perch. Cos I'm exactly the same, especially when it pays off👍. Anyhow at the end of the session you got the result. And fantastic result to Simon. A great vlog enjoyed every minute 👍
Brilliant video Simon, very entertaining & great shots at at the end. Audio was a little quiet at times but I guess you were speaking quietly while in the hide. Top marks.
I've got my perches all made but used brolley spikes as my base to the perches..my issue is finding the stream or brook to use...it needs to be quiet enough not to be disturbed but not too far to carry your gear...I will keep looking, but love the concept...
Yeh thats a fair shout Jeremy. Its always a fine line between finding somewhere accessible but also somewhere thats quiet where you aren't going to get bothered by folk. Good luck with your search👍🏼👀
Hello Simon, magnificent reportage in search of the kingfisher, very good work and effort. Would you mind giving me your opinion of the video support you use? and why don't you use a gimbal head ?? Thank you very much for sharing and kind regards.
Hi Miguel, I use the Manfrotto 502AH video head. I have a carbon gimbal that never gets used any more. I switched to the video head because of the amount of film footage i try and capture for the youtube films. Its also a great support for doing stills. I'll probably never go back to the gimbal as the 502 does everything that the gimbal does and more. I'm going to do a film on the two products soon.
Hi Simon, great shots of the Kingfisher. Do you know the Function called "Pro Capture" at Olympus Cameras? With it you could shot the Kingfisher flying away from sign pinsharp! Try it! I'm shure, you would love it. Espen Helland has also a video about it with woodpeckers, leaving there cave. Best regards from Bavaria Matthias
Love it! Like you I remember two images from my youth that grabbed my photography interest, one was puffins with sand eels ✅. Kingfishers Diving ......working on it but love the sign idea, appeals to mt sense of humour. One question, what make are your trousers? They look ideal and have built in knee pad pockets, would love a pair. Cheers and keep making it happen.
Hi Stephen, the trousers are Fjallraven Vidda Pro. Awesome pants, I've also got a pair of Fjallraven Barents Pro that are double lined . Theyre a winter trouser with a fleecy lining. G1000 fabric can be waxed to weatherproof them.
@@simoneardley Thanks Simon, the fleece line version sounds ideal for sitting in my hide for hours in end; I can give my wife her tights back then but shhh don’t tell anyone I was where them.
Hello Simon, very Good Video. I want directly go out and want to photograph a kingfisher... (if I find one😊). One question: I have seen you are using a Garmin watch. Do you tag gps position on your photos with it? Thank you. Thorsten
Hi Simon , I’ve got some good shots of kingfisher on some perches usually in nature reserves so can’t really do a sign and take it . Any suggestions on locations i am in north lincs . Loved the video and bought the nite hawk pop up hide 👍🏻 Thanks Karen
Hi Karen, good luck with the hide. Not sure about your area as I'm in Lancashire but i find the best way is to get out on your local public footpaths and have a good mooch about. A good selection of OS maps and binoculars is a must!! Google Earth is also a great assett.
Brilliant Simon, hard work paid off despite the bovine intrusion! What do you use to edit the video you shoot on the D500? No problems with the sound quality (on my computer at least).
Thanks Peter, I use imovie on the apple mac. There are more complex editing programs out there but I'm used to it now and I dont feel the need to change yet.👍
Just discovered your channel Simon and loving it! Working my way through all your vids, love the way they're 'complete' rather than just giving us the end product (the photos). Quick question, which software do you use for the editing of the vids? Please keep up the good work, your authenticity shines through!
Love the sign
This whole project was amazing to watch! Love everything about it
Brilliant cracking photos of the kingfisher, sound was on the ball. Funny as feck when the cow got in on the action😂.
Cheers Gordon, thought it was getting in the hide with me !!!👍🏼😆
Thank you got to be one of my favourite birds ...... fantastic a real pleasure to watch
Atb 👍🏽👍🏽
Chris Witts.
What a perfect outcome to your effort that captures a shot of the Kingfisher sat upon the sign you made for him.
Cheers Chris, a lot of hard work and patience but we got the shot in the end 👍
Sound quality spot on

Nice one Andy, just remember patience is the key. Put yourself a perch out when you get to the location and wait. They will come!! Good luck📷👀

Thanks for another great video. The sound was perfect.
Simon, just magic!

Cracking stuff Simon great set up, glad that cow did'nt demolish your perch. Awesome images well deserved for all the effort you put into it. Take care.

Very nice video mate, spot on.

Nice one Ian, yeh theyre fickle little birds. Sometimes they land, other times they bomb straight past. Unpredictable at best!!!
Nice video and perfect sound, the new mic. is really good :)
A big thanks to you Simon i now have my first shots of a Kingfisher coming from your advice keep up the good work it's fantastic

Hahahaha the cow and the dramatic music, almost pied my self :p
Took me ages to find that music!!!🤣
Another brilliant video bought the chair hide, even better with the modification. Very good sound.
Cheers Denzil, good luck with the hide👍🏼
wonderful, really enjoyed that. just starting out with bird photography. have sat in a hide for hours waiting for my favourite bird and never thought of actually putting a perch there instead of trying to find a likely one.
Yeh Martin, its a technique that works very well with Kingfishers, theyre very inquisitive.
Brilliant Video! This is the sort of stuff I get up to. You have given me a couple of ideas. Thank you. :-)
Sign made and heading off this morning to set up in a spot where my local kingfisher hangs out. Fingers crossed.
Good luck Jonathan, may the force be with you!!🤞🤞😆

Thanks Amanda. Might have to give Yarrow a look. Its only down the road from me 👍🏼👀
Well worth it (normally) if you get the chance, Simon...plenty of birds, most of them brave...(they are used to being fed)

Nice one John, bet its a bit warmer over there mate. Good luck in your new pursuit, all the best from Lancashire 👍🏼
@@simoneardley you'd be surprised! Been down to 9c overnight here the last few days. Baltic when you're used to 30+! Keep on keeping on 👍🐦📸
It's easy to find and picture kingfishers here..Srinagar
Beautiful bird. I guess the Kingfisher can’t read the sign Simon. Hehe
Hi Simon, sound quality was great.. when the cow came you should of Mooooov'd to the Udder bank 🤣😁 great vlog as always loved the kingfisher photos 👍
Haha, don't give up the day job!! 😉🤣🤣
@@simoneardley haha they were my best ones 🤣
Cheers Michael, no time to swear. I was too busy staring death in the face!!!😂😂
Brilliant video Simon, very entertaining & great shots at at the end.
Audio was a little quiet at times but I guess you were speaking quietly while in the hide.
Top marks.
Cheers Stewart👍🏼
LOL - Charming....
Would love to come out with you and get some shots of the king fisher some time, I live in Colne, Lancs not so far away
Just goes to show if you put the effort in you get the results.
Best regards from Bavaria
Matthias
I think that you have a wonderful idea with that perch for the KINGFISHERS.
Which do you prefer still photography or video.
Thanks Robert, I prefer stills to be honest but the video is a must for the RUclips films 🙂
bonjour Simon

Salut, merci pour les aimables commentaires. J'étais un peu inquiet à un moment donné. Je pensais que la vache serait assise sur mes genoux !! Merci d'avoir regardé ma chaîne.
Like your videos very much witch lense would you recommend for the d 3400 entry level camera for bird photography thanks
Thanks Paul, all depends on budget really. I love the Sigma 150-600 and its great value.
Hello Simon, very Good Video. I want directly go out and want to photograph a kingfisher... (if I find one😊). One question: I have seen you are using a Garmin watch. Do you tag gps position on your photos with it? Thank you. Thorsten
Hi Thorsten, no its not something i do really.I use an app called what3words for tagging locations which is useful.
There are more complex editing programs out there but I'm used to it now and I dont feel the need to change yet.👍
great video Simon
Thanks David
Great video, I'm doing exactly the same thing..
Good luck Earl👍
@@simoneardley Thank you very much...
I am pretty sure "private" = for kingfisher only, "no fishing" = all sort of other creatures, especially humans.
Don’t blame the cow , it was just taking your advice you gave (3 hrs ) earlier
🤣 Fair point!!
Just discovered your channel Simon and loving it! Working my way through all your vids, love the way they're 'complete' rather than just giving us the end product (the photos). Quick question, which software do you use for the editing of the vids? Please keep up the good work, your authenticity shines through!
Cheers Mongoose, I use imovie on the apple mac to produce the videos. Thanks for watching 😀👍🏼
