Light novel knowledge on my boys, and Adorkable: what they don't explicitly say in the anime is that the Hydra's scales were razor sharp. So what took Rudy's hand was a combo of the burning hot Hydra blood and the scales on the eyelids. Also what they show in the anime that they describe in the LN is that Paul looks over to Rudy and weakly smiles. I take this to mean Paul was happy he could save Rudy in the end. Hats off to Paul, a very flawed human who did very shitty things in life but I'll be damned if i didn't shed tears for the man when i read this chapter.
To add more context why paul sword can cut hydra head easily, it because the sword is a special one, it has pasif that can cut anyting like butter(or someting like that)

Nah Paul cared about Rudy. He already said he wants his whole family to be reunited. Rudy included. He didn't save Rudy because he was an asset. he was just saving him as a father. thats why He smiled in the end seeing Rudy safe. And it was perfectly normal for Paul to be angry at Rudy because Rudy talked about how his own mother might be dead in the crystal. No son should think that way about their mother. on People's PoV
Paul was more so upset at himself when he told Rudy to show emotion about his mother. The show doesn’t tell u anything about it but Paul lost his mother and his family blames him for it and he blames himself so when he tell Rudy to die in order to save his mother it’s him talking to his younger self through Rudy. That’s why he says he has no reason as a parent to ask there child of tht. Cause it’s backwards thinking

This isn't really spoilers if you don't read LN as I dont think it'll be in anime, but there's extra chapter on Paul's final thoughts. He knows he's going to die, and his thoughts revolve around if the Hydra is dead and if Rudy made it, if Zenith is alive, he apologizes to Lilia and his daughters, and as he was fading out he hears Rudy's voice asking "why" which allowed his mind to ease. That Rudy is alive and everything will be okay.

As a non-LN reader, I interpreted Paul's "save your mom, even if it kills you" speech as more of a pep talk before the big fight to save Zenith. I think he wanted to impart to Rudy that when trying to save a family member, you have to go in with the conviction of being ready to sacrifice yourself in order to accomplish the mission. Which is what Paul did for Rudy. He saved Rudy even though it killed him, and I think that's why he smiled using the last ounce of energy he had left seeing Rudy. He was happy seeing Rudy alive. I think he holds Rudy's life and his wife's in equal regards, but he also thinks of Rudy as an equal to him, actually, probably even greater than him. And that's why he wanted Rudy to be more emotionally invested - and that goes into their small fight before about Rudy being too calm. I think Paul when he calmed down recognized that being calm is important, but so is being emotionally giving it your all. Rudy and Paul's dynamic is really interested and unique. Paul I think sees Rudy as his son, but also a someone like an extremely reliable bestfriend.

A lot of people are overlooking Paul's words to Rudy about saving his mom. He's asking him to put his life on the line to save her, because Rudeus had past tendency of not being overly caring of his family like when he mentioned Sylphie before his mom back at their reunion. He doesn't know what's going on in his head, so he basically just gave him a few words to put his life on the line because we're family and you should cherish that fact.
18:30 I believe pauls preditctions and combat instict was battle aura. Its the strength and instinct in battle, Paul (and even Eris) has really high affinity. If u recall in the university Badigadi was training Rudy and points out that he has 0 battle aura but a huge manapool.
The reason Paul was able to cut the heads is because the shorter sword he has essentially has a special effect; the harder something is to cut, the better it gets at cutting. I believe it was mentioned in the strategy meeting in the LN, but the anime conveys clearly enough that Paul is the only one that can cut the Hydra so extra exposition wasn't necessary.
6:45 nah Paul has a point. Since the first episode Paul knew there was something different about Rudy and Paul is questioning why Rudy didn't seem to have any emotions at all good or bad about finally finding his mother.

Interesting enough the thing where Paul talked about how Rudy should give his life for Zenith makes a whole lot more sense when you know about Pauls past. What he is saying there makes a ton of more sense with that.

When she died, his father (and to some extent paul himself) blamed paul for her mother's death. Paul regrets not being able to save his mom's life. So thats why he said those lines to Rudy
@@faceless1911 Pauls a pretty interesting character, you also learn in season 1 that he really regrets that him and his own father left on bad terms and never spoke again. That's been eating at him ever since, and he almost made the same mistake with Rudy.
in the novel they explained why they cremated paul right there, humans that die in the labyrinth turn in to skeleton monster after death. in the novel rudy collected his ashes but in the anime its not really explained. he wanted to bring his body back but geese and alinelise suggested against it since they knew the corpse would react to the labyrinth.
Paul spent most of his life being a horrible husband and mid father but used the final moments of his life to finally earn both the Husband of the year and Father of the year awards, that too on Father's Day. Absolute GOAT of a character. RIP.

Rudy is unable to use battle aura, it was something that was focused on in the light novel and manga but neglected in the anime, he's not capable of doing the same inhuman feats as paul and elinalise, so he has much slower physical speed and reaction time.
Feel like this is a big mistake of the show, not even showing us battle aura. They've had a few opportunities to present it or at least the general idea, but they didn't, and now we get a moment like this and people are confused why Rudy is so slow to react. I don't think people understand that Paul was moving around like the Flash because of his touki, and even though he's repeatedly tried to train it, Rudy has no ability to use battle aura, so he's limited to what a normal human can do. Plus, anime did a poor job showing how those individual segments of the hydra were flailing around, trying to smash everybody. Rudy was trying to do his best to keep track of what was happening but there were too many moving parts and they were all moving incredibly fast. He'll still blame himself, and technically it was on him, but it's a lot more understandable if you get that Paul is zipping around like some MCU hero and Rudy, though blessed with massive amount of mana, is physically just a very fit human, nothing more.
the reason rudy couldnt dodge the blow that paul took for him is because he wasnt physically fast enough to dodge it. in the light novel, the demon eye did give him the info but he was not fast enough to dodge it, its one of the biggest flaws of the demon eye
In my opinion if rudeus didnt come : 1.Paul woudnt have sacrificed himself 2.Roxy wouldnt have been found 3.The team wouldnt have figured out the way into the 6th stratum. 4.Even if they did they wouldnt be able to defeat the hydra as the integral part in the fight was Rudy
Now Because Rudy was there : 1.Paul died but zenith got saved despite being in a vegetative state. 2.Roxy got saved because in the anime we see she literally got saved just before getting killed which wouldnt have happened without Rudy. 3.Rudeus found the secret teleporter to the 6th stratum 4.Rudy helped in defeating Hydra. Now considereing all of these i dont think i will trust the Hitogami for now
Well a few things wrong. Rudy wasn't as integral as you think, and they could have figured out the burning by themselves. They also could have eventually mapped out their way to the boss. If anything the most important one here was paulz without him no one can cut the scales but any fire mage can burn things as long as they can get close enough. Talhand and elinalise could help with that since they are the tanks.
18:30 Rudeus' Demon Eye gives him foresight, but he still has his normal reaction speed even with that. Paul being Advanced in all three schools of swordsmanship makes him superhuman, so he can react faster, his body can take more punishment, he can perform greater feats of strength, and he's much faster than a baseline human. Rudeus' mana is entirely dedicated to his spellcasting, so he can't do any of that. Rudeus is on the level of a youth athlete, but he is one of the physically weaker named characters in the entire story.
rudy is still a superhuman, hes intermediate in sword god style and elementary in water/north god style, he also one shotted luke (literally ariel's bodyguard) WITHOUT magic while being a mage
@@quasogod Rudeus is at the level of a youth athlete. And *only* at that level. Luke's adequate against your regular dude who just happened to pick up a sword, but against a dedicated fighter he sucks. A regular bod can reach Intermediate in any of the schools with enough training, but Advanced requires a degree of conscious control over Battle Aura, which unlocks swordsmanship school techniques and superhuman feats of speed and strength. Rudeus lacks Battle Aura completely.
@@quasogod The anime skipped over this part, but Rudy literally isn't superhuman like the better sword users. Luke is not very good. Rudy is stuck at intermediate because he cannot use battle aura. That's what makes sword users super human. Advanced sword users and up have battle aura but Rudy is unable to use it.
Just to Note, the demon eyes can predict movements and that is based on how much mana Rudy puts into it but even using a little bit consumes a ton of mana. Rudy had to prioritize his mana with cauterizing the stubs, which when the other defenders were being slapped by the stubs with no heads, left him open and only one that could do anything was Paul. And Paul was Zenith focus, but when he saw his son in danger he didn't even think, he acted because that is what he does.
Ye paul was advanced tier in all 3 sword styles + experience, so low key his abilities combined could be comparable to a naive saint tier swordsman in a single style.
5:40 Btw, Elinalise had a "chunk missing" here. The anime chilled out the smaller injures a bunch. 7:02 Elinalise has HELLA insight about sooooo much. She has had some rough af times, me thinks. 10:32 soz at this point, the anime doesn't reqlly show it, but the hydra was flinging around the headless necks, knowing those can kill, too. 12:39 That eyelid is basically a guillotine. If you look closely, you'll see Rudi's arm getting chopped into. 14:38 The crystal luquifies, not shatters. There is precedent for it, too. This was one HELLUVA scene to read the first time. I think I cried. I mean, at the time, reading Muchoku Tensei felt like one of the greatest experiences of my life. That is how much I was enjoying it, so a prime death like Paul hit fucking hard.
Even though it’s good to be calm, Paul’s reaction is fairly realistic when seeing the person he’s been searching for years desperately. Someone he loves deeply, overall it’s understandable that if someone you cared about was in danger, shit imagine an animal attacking someone you love. You’re telling me you wouldn’t do anything and everything. Probably start with trying to get its attention, fight it off, do anything to save them. Also apparently Paul saying save your mother even if it kill you supposedly has two meanings. One he couldn’t save his sick mom when he was little and wishes he could have. So to him saying it to his son it was hoping that he wouldn’t have to deal with the loss of a mother the way he did. And second it was him acknowledging to rudues that he views him as his equal and respects him. It’s also the level of resolve to go into the battle with. In the end Paul was never going to let his son die. Its dark that they put it in Father’s Day but also beautiful it’s the highlight of Father’s who would give up everything their wives and children. Rip
There is a power that all high level swordsmen have but we don't see it in the show because we see things from rudy's perspective and he can't comprehend it cause his two teachers paul and ghislaine are natural born fighters so they couldn't explain it well to him, this '"Battle aura" allows a young eris cut through demons and is why paul could cut the hydro and elinalise couldn't cause he has more battle aura than her
Paul’s death got spoiled for me by a Manga/LN reader, but this episode was still great. Mushoku Tensei is seriously my favorite show, right behind Frieren. They have the same general feel to them. I hope all fantasy anime follows their example.

The fairy tale happy ending version: after being broken out of the crystal, Zenith immediately recovers, and being a powerful cleric, rushes over and revives Paul.... for a moment I thought there was a chance of that happening! Paul did sacrifice himself to save Rudy, but Rudy immediately sacrificed his hand to take down the hydra (with assist from Roxy). Yeah, I think you're right, Rudy will blame himself, unjustly, because they could never have won without him. (Having a potential child to go home to may help, but it may also depress him ("Paul will never see his grandson" and "how can I face Norn?) I think the one thing that may help Rudy get over the likely depression is he has both Roxy (who is only alive because Rudy saved her) and Lilia with him
Someone told me that in the light novel Rudy thinks to himself that Paul cares for Zenith the most, followed by Lilia, then Norn, then Aisha, and finally for Rudy the least. But I guess my dude failed to realize that even if he happens to be right and that's how Paul felt about his family members, he still cared for Rudy more than he cared about himself and was willing to die to save his life and smile when he realized he'd accomplished it even after being torn in half.

Rudy was using his demon eye at the moment Paul saved him, but couldn’t process wtf was happening because the hydra was freaking the fuck out since it was almost dead. So Rudy was actually locked in, but it’s the same thing like with Orsted, he saw what was gonna happen but couldn’t react/ couldn’t process it in time since he’s a mage and usually fights from far away, but had to stay close up this fight so that the fire magic actually worked against the hydra. Also probably all happened in like 5 seconds, so rudy really couldn’t do anything since he’s not fast like Paul.
People admiring Rudy for remaining calm, but they forget, Rudy himself stated that he barely ever saw Zenith as a mother. Remember his reaction to the idea that Roxy was POSSIBLY dead? He was immediately shocked (his face broke!) before they even finished their line! Yet here he is, barely flinching at Zenith. So people shouldn't really be admiring Rudy for that act.
And beside rudeus is not a reliable narrator he's like not aware how much he loves zenith or denies that he loves zenith as a mother. when he's depressed the only thing keeping him from k*lling himself is that they haven't rescued zenith yet. there's clearly something wrong with him processing emotions and sometimes makes it not feel emotions and hide it at all like he's avoiding feeling anything like when he died with orsted he's so nonchalant like his reaction is only"well it's a shame I guess I died" like I noticed that he's always calculating it. The same with Paul he's like stopping himself or hesitant to view him as a father since in the previous world he is older than him but he clearly loves him it's just like a complicated situation and mentally he didn't mature due to bullying.
It shows a deeper point…Father’s aren’t truly valued or loved properly til their dead and gone…it shouldn’t be that way, but it is, and that’s for Men in general.

People really believe what rudeus is saying about his mom and not loving her that much when he's clearly not a reliable narrator he doesn't know his own emotions man and maybe he's even denying it since he's not that good at processing emotions I guess and remember the reason he doesn't off himself because he thought of zenith every time
Rudeus can't manifest touki so he can't buff himself like Paul and others so even if he does see the future he can't react to it cause it too fast also it only shows the future in his field of view so with the hydra being big and being near it he doesn't understand what happens that time when he's seeing future, he doesn't know what hit him also add the slight relief that it's almost over
I think paul asked rudy to risk his life because paul was going to do the same and try get in there. He would be close to paul and making it able to protect rudy for paul
Talking about how fast etc Paul is, Paul and as a rule of thumb warriors that are saint+ in the ranks can use battle aura, Paul is advanced in all 3 sword techniques which is a feat by itself. Battle aura is kind of like manipulating mana to extremely boost your physical stats. In the novel Rudeus comments on how fast paul was in that fight, he couldnt track how fast he was when Paul was using his battle aura. I believe Rifujin (the author) said that Paul just by being advanced on all 3 styles should be a mid level saint rank fighter. All of that while he was a doofus and left the dojo and never completing his actual training under a master. I'm pretty sure its out in the open that skill wise Paul was considered kind of a generational talent but also a lazy doofus that cared more about having fun than putting in serious work and improving his skills. Adorkable if Rudy never went there, Roxy would be dead, Paul would still try and get there to save zenith... resulting in the whole party getting wiped (probly before even reaching the 6th stratum) and Zenith would still be there trapped forever. Do you think he would be better off finding out that Roxy, Paul, Geese, Elinalise all died without accomplishing anything than what happened now? sure they both lead to eventual trauma, but i believe the first scenario would be an even harder pill to swallow since he could go there and decided to stay put.
i aint read nun but this is clearly a case of extreme brain damage. it feels like when people with CT revert to an almost childlike state. Im worried Rudy is gonna have to raise/care for his own mother now because of her state. what a horrible end.
The thing that bugged me about Rudy thinking about his feelings for Zenith is that it goes against the end of s1. After Eris left him and he fell back into his depression, it was the drive to find Zenith that made him pick himself back up and set out again. You get a sense that he really cared about her.
A few things of note that's not spoilers. Paul was Advanced rank in all sword styles(possibly even saint tier by this time). What makes fighters super dangerous in this world is touki. I forget the specifics, but rather than using their mana externally, they turn it all inward and boost their physical properties. That's why you see Ruijerd stop a giant snake, or see Ghislane move fast enough to bend light. It also makes them tougher. Rudeus, cannot use touki at all. His body is stuck as a normal humans. That's one of the reasons he works out everyday. As for his demon eye, he might be able to see ahead a few seconds, but that doesn't mean his body can react in time. What's even worse with the hydra was it was big and fast. It covered his field of view, and if he isn't looking in a certain direction, his eye can't see ahead.
Rudy has to be going in a major mental depression like the last 2 times. His dad died to save him, his mother probably has some major mental issues from her experience. He maybe worried about Norm, she probably going to be angry at him and blame him for his dad death. I think he will need the help from someone to get him out of this hole.
Another painful aspect to this episode that doesn't click immediately is that when you think about Rudy's remark about how he doesn't feel attached to Zenith because of the lack of time he spent with her but in order to save her he ends up losing the parent he built more of a bond with.
Pauls actions seeing Zenith in the crystal was completely understandable, imagine seeing your wife who you haven't seen in years stuck in some crystal being guarded by a monster, of course you would rush to try and save her, especially if youre as desperate as paul was
Understandable that Paul would be that unhinged, he spent all his time after the teleportation incident looking for his family - the only thing in his mind. Rudy was forced to fend for himself on the Demon Continent, then after that, he was focused his "problem" at the magic school and his new relationships there. Paul's unwell, and he died unwell. The only consolation probably is his last thought was that he saved his wife and he saved his son, thus the smile before dying.
Zenith is in a state that normally happens to people that go through coma. Hitogami really wanted Rudy to regret a lot of things by keeping him from going to Begarit. So many people woulda been dead from this quest without Rudy
2:35 Mail takes a hell of a long time to get anywhere, and htere's no guarantee it'd make it to the recipient. Paul simply hasn't received the letters Rudeus has sent him at the start of the cour.
Paul was advanced in all three sword styles.When you get to advanced in a sword style that means you can use touki. Basically coating your body in mana and enhancing all physical aspects iirc. Rudy isnot able to use touki which means the upper limit in the sword is intermediate and no enhanced physical abilities.
I think the experienced members expected a last ditch play by the hydra, so they were ready for when the stumps attacked them. But Rudy underestimated it once it got to the last head.
He didn’t save Rudy just because Rudy was needed to save Zenith. He saved Rudy because Rudy is his son and he loves him just as much as he loves anyone else in the family. In the audio drama CD, we learn that Paul’s final thoughts were about wanting to see his family together one last time, but “at least this is better than seeing Rudy die”. So his final thought was about Rudy, not Zenith. Which means he saved Rudy out of love for Rudy, not for Zenith.
anime could at least spend 30 seconds to give the viewer pauls thoughts (Pauls Gaiden) when he said to Rudeus "save your mother even if it kills you" Pauls mother died due to illness.. something he blames himself for. Not being able to protect someone he cared about. So, as much as the line is directed to Rudeus, its also directed towards Paul himself. Yeah Paul said "save your mother even if it kills you" but he at the same time holds himself to that standard for every member of his family. Paul wouldn't and didn't hesitate for an instant to trade his life for any of his family members lives. But he doesn't really want Rudeus to die to save his mother(but wants him to be ready to put his life on the line for his wife, for his children etc), he wants him to give it his all no matter the outcome, so he will not come to regret it and never forgiving himself like Paul did.
Paul's death was spoiled to me in the worst way possible: Instagram recommendations. Just a single frame in a sea of images. Man was I mad... I tried really hard to forget it, but of course it was impossible. It was the first and last spoiler I ever saw of Mushoku too. On the other hand, I was only expecting it from this episode, so the Zenith twist really got me
Trust me, I read the LN, it's a biography of Rudeus Greyrat, so there's a quote about parent being gone, so I got spoiled but I still got shocked at how Paul died and Zenith being an empty shell broke me for like 10 straight volumes, but it does get its own happy closure eventually. If you think this season is great, I suggest reading the LN, the extra details makes all the characters and events feel 10x more impactful.
I think Paul was a lot more misunderstood in the last few days of his life, and the reason for that being his antics in his adventures. He already came to terms with ending his life if it meant he could reunite his family, and when he was angry at Rudy for being emotionally detached upon seeing Zenith's situation, his reaction was warranted.
after all paul always felt bad about not being able to do anything to be proud of for rudy.. he was happy he got to save his sons life aswell as his wife. no regrets
The thing that really gets me most is that Rudy REALLY got s**t on this episode... He saved his mom, but she can't speak and is a borderline vegetable. He lost his left hand to the hydra fight. AND his dad died to that same monster. I knew this was coming cause I spoiled myself, but man. And this being aired on Father's Day makes it hit even harder.
Pretty gutted by this one. Knew it was coming (had it spoiled ages ago, damnit!).... That battle was absolutely sick and one of the best boss battles I've seen in an anime. Had me on the edge of my seat and holding my breath. Such a gut punch to lose Paul and then Zenith is not there mentally. Rudy going to be in a bad state mentally/emotionally. I bet Roxy will be there to help him, but that will probably complicate things. Harsh father's day episode. I'm not close with my own Dad and I always hate holidays like this, let alone seeing something like this on a Father's Day =/ (Poor, poor Norn. I imagine this is going to damage their already fragile relationship too. I hope it doesn't.)
Before hydra's fight, paul said he can't be calm as rudy, can't make an idea or someone as good as him. I think that's why he said "you have to save your mother even tho it would kill you" but I think deep inside, paul will sacrifice himself for his the most proud son cause he value rudy more than him to protect the family because paul good for nothing. Even tho paul has bad attitude but he is the real man and real father 😭😭😭. Now, rudy become the head of the family.

Recall how Rudy was able to outwrestle Eris after they sparred on the beach. But when Eris is fighting for real, she's jumping all over the place like Paul was. BTW, remember when everybody hated Paul?
Put this for Episode of the Year Candidate. Rudy is not battle tested, he clearly needs more experience, even if you’re a mage you have to make moves and think quick. Rudy lost focus, this will be his greatest teaching moment. Now we will see the Full Birth of the Monster that Rudy will become. It’s about to turn up.
In the anime it wasn't shown well but rudy couldn't tell what was going on his eye could only see what's in front of him when the hydra got to one head its started wildly moving all its neck and with rudy directly next his eye couldn't process all that information nor could he see all of it. going even further rudy doesnt have battles aura the ability to coat your body in mana so he can't enhance his speed/strength so its not like he could just duck in out of the fight like paul and the others funny enough it was because of this battle aura that paul died as a kick he used would actually pushed them both out the way if he didnt have it but ended up leaving paul in place Tldr rudy wad focused the whole time and didn't space out

Light novel knowledge on my boys, and Adorkable: what they don't explicitly say in the anime is that the Hydra's scales were razor sharp. So what took Rudy's hand was a combo of the burning hot Hydra blood and the scales on the eyelids. Also what they show in the anime that they describe in the LN is that Paul looks over to Rudy and weakly smiles. I take this to mean Paul was happy he could save Rudy in the end.
Hats off to Paul, a very flawed human who did very shitty things in life but I'll be damned if i didn't shed tears for the man when i read this chapter.

To add more context why paul sword can cut hydra head easily, it because the sword is a special one, it has pasif that can cut anyting like butter(or someting like that)

Nah Paul cared about Rudy. He already said he wants his whole family to be reunited. Rudy included. He didn't save Rudy because he was an asset. he was just saving him as a father. thats why He smiled in the end seeing Rudy safe. And it was perfectly normal for Paul to be angry at Rudy because Rudy talked about how his own mother might be dead in the crystal.

He definitely had a stronger bond with Paul. It's not like he didn't care about Zenith, but not quite as much.
This isn't really spoilers if you don't read LN as I dont think it'll be in anime, but there's extra chapter on Paul's final thoughts. He knows he's going to die, and his thoughts revolve around if the Hydra is dead and if Rudy made it, if Zenith is alive, he apologizes to Lilia and his daughters, and as he was fading out he hears Rudy's voice asking "why" which allowed his mind to ease. That Rudy is alive and everything will be okay.

As a non-LN reader, I interpreted Paul's "save your mom, even if it kills you" speech as more of a pep talk before the big fight to save Zenith. I think he wanted to impart to Rudy that when trying to save a family member, you have to go in with the conviction of being ready to sacrifice yourself in order to accomplish the mission. Which is what Paul did for Rudy. He saved Rudy even though it killed him, and I think that's why he smiled using the last ounce of energy he had left seeing Rudy. He was happy seeing Rudy alive. I think he holds Rudy's life and his wife's in equal regards, but he also thinks of Rudy as an equal to him, actually, probably even greater than him. And that's why he wanted Rudy to be more emotionally invested - and that goes into their small fight before about Rudy being too calm. I think Paul when he calmed down recognized that being calm is important, but so is being emotionally giving it your all. Rudy and Paul's dynamic is really interested and unique. Paul I think sees Rudy as his son, but also a someone like an extremely reliable bestfriend.

A lot of people are overlooking Paul's words to Rudy about saving his mom. He's asking him to put his life on the line to save her, because Rudeus had past tendency of not being overly caring of his family like when he mentioned Sylphie before his mom back at their reunion. He doesn't know what's going on in his head, so he basically just gave him a few words to put his life on the line because we're family and you should cherish that fact.

I believe pauls preditctions and combat instict was battle aura. Its the strength and instinct in battle, Paul (and even Eris) has really high affinity.
If u recall in the university Badigadi was training Rudy and points out that he has 0 battle aura but a huge manapool.
The reason Paul was able to cut the heads is because the shorter sword he has essentially has a special effect; the harder something is to cut, the better it gets at cutting. I believe it was mentioned in the strategy meeting in the LN, but the anime conveys clearly enough that Paul is the only one that can cut the Hydra so extra exposition wasn't necessary.

Paul spent most of his life being a horrible husband and mid father but used the final moments of his life to finally earn both the Husband of the year and Father of the year awards, that too on Father's Day. Absolute GOAT of a character. RIP.

Rudy is unable to use battle aura, it was something that was focused on in the light novel and manga but neglected in the anime, he's not capable of doing the same inhuman feats as paul and elinalise, so he has much slower physical speed and reaction time.
Feel like this is a big mistake of the show, not even showing us battle aura. They've had a few opportunities to present it or at least the general idea, but they didn't, and now we get a moment like this and people are confused why Rudy is so slow to react. I don't think people understand that Paul was moving around like the Flash because of his touki, and even though he's repeatedly tried to train it, Rudy has no ability to use battle aura, so he's limited to what a normal human can do.
Plus, anime did a poor job showing how those individual segments of the hydra were flailing around, trying to smash everybody. Rudy was trying to do his best to keep track of what was happening but there were too many moving parts and they were all moving incredibly fast.
He'll still blame himself, and technically it was on him, but it's a lot more understandable if you get that Paul is zipping around like some MCU hero and Rudy, though blessed with massive amount of mana, is physically just a very fit human, nothing more.
Happy Father's Day. It's good that Rudy was able to lend a hand to this quest.
the reason rudy couldnt dodge the blow that paul took for him is because he wasnt physically fast enough to dodge it. in the light novel, the demon eye did give him the info but he was not fast enough to dodge it, its one of the biggest flaws of the demon eye
In my opinion if rudeus didnt come :
1.Paul woudnt have sacrificed himself
2.Roxy wouldnt have been found
3.The team wouldnt have figured out the way into the 6th stratum.
4.Even if they did they wouldnt be able to defeat the hydra as the integral part in the fight was Rudy
Now Because Rudy was there :
1.Paul died but zenith got saved despite being in a vegetative state.
2.Roxy got saved because in the anime we see she literally got saved just before getting killed which wouldnt have happened without Rudy.
3.Rudeus found the secret teleporter to the 6th stratum
4.Rudy helped in defeating Hydra.
Now considereing all of these i dont think i will trust the Hitogami for now

Well a few things wrong. Rudy wasn't as integral as you think, and they could have figured out the burning by themselves. They also could have eventually mapped out their way to the boss. If anything the most important one here was paulz without him no one can cut the scales but any fire mage can burn things as long as they can get close enough. Talhand and elinalise could help with that since they are the tanks.
18:30 Rudeus' Demon Eye gives him foresight, but he still has his normal reaction speed even with that. Paul being Advanced in all three schools of swordsmanship makes him superhuman, so he can react faster, his body can take more punishment, he can perform greater feats of strength, and he's much faster than a baseline human. Rudeus' mana is entirely dedicated to his spellcasting, so he can't do any of that. Rudeus is on the level of a youth athlete, but he is one of the physically weaker named characters in the entire story.
rudy is still a superhuman, hes intermediate in sword god style and elementary in water/north god style, he also one shotted luke (literally ariel's bodyguard) WITHOUT magic while being a mage

Luke's adequate against your regular dude who just happened to pick up a sword, but against a dedicated fighter he sucks.
A regular bod can reach Intermediate in any of the schools with enough training, but Advanced requires a degree of conscious control over Battle Aura, which unlocks swordsmanship school techniques and superhuman feats of speed and strength.
Rudeus lacks Battle Aura completely.

That's what makes sword users super human. Advanced sword users and up have battle aura but Rudy is unable to use it.

Just to Note, the demon eyes can predict movements and that is based on how much mana Rudy puts into it but even using a little bit consumes a ton of mana. Rudy had to prioritize his mana with cauterizing the stubs, which when the other defenders were being slapped by the stubs with no heads, left him open and only one that could do anything was Paul. And Paul was Zenith focus, but when he saw his son in danger he didn't even think, he acted because that is what he does.

This was one HELLUVA scene to read the first time. I think I cried.
I mean, at the time, reading Muchoku Tensei felt like one of the greatest experiences of my life. That is how much I was enjoying it, so a prime death like Paul hit fucking hard.

Even though it’s good to be calm, Paul’s reaction is fairly realistic when seeing the person he’s been searching for years desperately. Someone he loves deeply, overall it’s understandable that if someone you cared about was in danger, shit imagine an animal attacking someone you love. You’re telling me you wouldn’t do anything and everything. Probably start with trying to get its attention, fight it off, do anything to save them. Also apparently Paul saying save your mother even if it kill you supposedly has two meanings. One he couldn’t save his sick mom when he was little and wishes he could have. So to him saying it to his son it was hoping that he wouldn’t have to deal with the loss of a mother the way he did. And second it was him acknowledging to rudues that he views him as his equal and respects him. It’s also the level of resolve to go into the battle with. In the end Paul was never going to let his son die. Its dark that they put it in Father’s Day but also beautiful it’s the highlight of Father’s who would give up everything their wives and children. There is a power that all high level swordsmen have but we don't see it in the show because we see things from rudy's perspective and he can't comprehend it cause his two teachers paul and ghislaine are natural born fighters so they couldn't explain it well to him, this '"Battle aura" allows a young eris cut through demons and is why paul could cut the hydro and elinalise couldn't cause he has more battle aura than her
Paul’s death got spoiled for me by a Manga/LN reader, but this episode was still great. Mushoku Tensei is seriously my favorite show, right behind Frieren.

The fairy tale happy ending version: after being broken out of the crystal, Zenith immediately recovers, and being a powerful cleric, rushes over and revives Paul.... for a moment I thought there was a chance of that happening! Paul did sacrifice himself to save Rudy, but Rudy immediately sacrificed his hand to take down the hydra (with assist from Roxy). Yeah, I think you're right, Rudy will blame himself, unjustly, because they could never have won without him. (Having a potential child to go home to may help, but it may also depress him ("Paul will never see his grandson" and "how can I face Norn?) I think the one thing that may help Rudy get over the likely depression is he has both Roxy (who is only alive because Rudy saved her) and Lilia with him
Someone told me that in the light novel Rudy thinks to himself that Paul cares for Zenith the most, followed by Lilia, then Norn, then Aisha, and finally for Rudy the least. But I guess my dude failed to realize that even if he happens to be right and that's how Paul felt about his family members, he still cared for Rudy more than he cared about himself and was willing to die to save his life and smile when he realized he'd accomplished it even after being torn in half.

Rudy was using his demon eye at the moment Paul saved him, but couldn’t process wtf was happening because the hydra was freaking the fuck out since it was almost dead. So Rudy was actually locked in, but it’s the same thing like with Orsted, he saw what was gonna happen but couldn’t react/ couldn’t process it in time since he’s a mage and usually fights from far away, but had to stay close up this fight so that the fire magic actually worked against the hydra. Also probably all happened in like 5 seconds, so rudy really couldn’t do anything since he’s not fast like Paul.
People admiring Rudy for remaining calm, but they forget, Rudy himself stated that he barely ever saw Zenith as a mother.
Remember his reaction to the idea that Roxy was POSSIBLY dead? He was immediately shocked (his face broke!) before they even finished their line! Yet here he is, barely flinching at Zenith.
So people shouldn't really be admiring Rudy for that act.
And beside rudeus is not a reliable narrator he's like not aware how much he loves zenith or denies that he loves zenith as a mother.

Rudeus can't manifest touki so he can't buff himself like Paul and others so even if he does see the future he can't react to it cause it too fast also it only shows the future in his field of view so with the hydra being big and being near it he doesn't understand what happens that time when he's seeing future, he doesn't know what hit him also add the slight relief that it's almost over

Talking about how fast etc Paul is, Paul and as a rule of thumb warriors that are saint+ in the ranks can use battle aura, Paul is advanced in all 3 sword techniques which is a feat by itself.
Battle aura is kind of like manipulating mana to extremely boost your physical stats.
In the novel Rudeus comments on how fast paul was in that fight, he couldnt track how fast he was when Paul was using his battle aura.
I believe Rifujin (the author) said that Paul just by being advanced on all 3 styles should be a mid level saint rank fighter.
All of that while he was a doofus and left the dojo and never completing his actual training under a master.
I'm pretty sure its out in the open that skill wise Paul was considered kind of a generational talent but also a lazy doofus that cared more about having fun than putting in serious work and improving his skills.
Adorkable if Rudy never went there, Roxy would be dead, Paul would still try and get there to save zenith... resulting in the whole party getting wiped (probly before even reaching the 6th stratum) and Zenith would still be there trapped forever.
Do you think he would be better off finding out that Roxy, Paul, Geese, Elinalise all died without accomplishing anything than what happened now?
sure they both lead to eventual trauma, but i believe the first scenario would be an even harder pill to swallow since he could go there and decided to stay put.

i aint read nun but this is clearly a case of extreme brain damage. it feels like when people with CT revert to an almost childlike state. Im worried Rudy is gonna have to raise/care for his own mother now because of her state. what a horrible end.
The thing that bugged me about Rudy thinking about his feelings for Zenith is that it goes against the end of s1. After Eris left him and he fell back into his depression, it was the drive to find Zenith that made him pick himself back up and set out again. You get a sense that he really cared about her.
A few things of note that's not spoilers. Paul was Advanced rank in all sword styles(possibly even saint tier by this time). What makes fighters super dangerous in this world is touki. I forget the specifics, but rather than using their mana externally, they turn it all inward and boost their physical properties. That's why you see Ruijerd stop a giant snake, or see Ghislane move fast enough to bend light. It also makes them tougher.
Rudeus, cannot use touki at all. His body is stuck as a normal humans. That's one of the reasons he works out everyday. As for his demon eye, he might be able to see ahead a few seconds, but that doesn't mean his body can react in time. What's even worse with the hydra was it was big and fast. It covered his field of view, and if he isn't looking in a certain direction, his eye can't see ahead.

Paul smilled at the end seeing rudy alive. Maybe they will go into more LN details later.
The domino effect from a single distraction
Rudy has to be going in a major mental depression like the last 2 times. His dad died to save him, his mother probably has some major mental issues from her experience. He maybe worried about Norm, she probably going to be angry at him and blame him for his dad death. I think he will need the help from someone to get him out of this hole.
Another painful aspect to this episode that doesn't click immediately is that when you think about Rudy's remark about how he doesn't feel attached to Zenith because of the lack of time he spent with her but in order to save her he ends up losing the parent he built more of a bond with.
Zenith now reminds me so much of Casca from berserk. Brings back so much pain 😢
Pauls actions seeing Zenith in the crystal was completely understandable, imagine seeing your wife who you haven't seen in years stuck in some crystal being guarded by a monster, of course you would rush to try and save her, especially if youre as desperate as paul was
Understandable that Paul would be that unhinged, he spent all his time after the teleportation incident looking for his family - the only thing in his mind. Rudy was forced to fend for himself on the Demon Continent, then after that, he was focused his "problem" at the magic school and his new relationships there.
Paul's unwell, and he died unwell. The only consolation probably is his last thought was that he saved his wife and he saved his son, thus the smile before dying.
Zenith is in a state that normally happens to people that go through coma.
Hitogami really wanted Rudy to regret a lot of things by keeping him from going to Begarit. So many people woulda been dead from this quest without Rudy

Paul was advanced in all three sword styles.When you get to advanced in a sword style that means you can use touki. Basically coating your body in mana and enhancing all physical aspects iirc. Rudy isnot able to use touki which means the upper limit in the sword is intermediate and no enhanced physical abilities.
I think the experienced members expected a last ditch play by the hydra, so they were ready for when the stumps attacked them. But Rudy underestimated it once it got to the last head.

He didn’t save Rudy just because Rudy was needed to save Zenith. He saved Rudy because Rudy is his son and he loves him just as much as he loves anyone else in the family. In the audio drama CD, we learn that Paul’s final thoughts were about wanting to see his family together one last time, but “at least this is better than seeing Rudy die”. So his final thought was about Rudy, not Zenith. Which means he saved Rudy out of love for Rudy, not for Zenith.
anime could at least spend 30 seconds to give the viewer pauls thoughts (Pauls Gaiden) when he said to Rudeus "save your mother even if it kills you"
Pauls mother died due to illness.. something he blames himself for. Not being able to protect someone he cared about. So, as much as the line is directed to Rudeus, its also directed towards Paul himself.
Yeah Paul said "save your mother even if it kills you" but he at the same time holds himself to that standard for every member of his family.
Paul wouldn't and didn't hesitate for an instant to trade his life for any of his family members lives.
But he doesn't really want Rudeus to die to save his mother(but wants him to be ready to put his life on the line for his wife, for his children etc), he wants him to give it his all no matter the outcome, so he will not come to regret it and never forgiving himself like Paul did.
I always read pauls request for rudy was his way of telling rudy to go all out. I feel like rudy picked up on that.
Paul's death was spoiled to me in the worst way possible: Instagram recommendations. Just a single frame in a sea of images. Man was I mad... I tried really hard to forget it, but of course it was impossible. It was the first and last spoiler I ever saw of Mushoku too. On the other hand, I was only expecting it from this episode, so the Zenith twist really got me

Trust me, I read the LN, it's a biography of Rudeus Greyrat, so there's a quote about parent being gone, so I got spoiled but I still got shocked at how Paul died and Zenith being an empty shell broke me for like 10 straight volumes, but it does get its own happy closure eventually. If you think this season is great, I suggest reading the LN, the extra details makes all the characters and events feel 10x more impactful.
I think Paul was a lot more misunderstood in the last few days of his life, and the reason for that being his antics in his adventures.
He already came to terms with ending his life if it meant he could reunite his family, and when he was angry at Rudy for being emotionally detached upon seeing Zenith's situation, his reaction was warranted.

The thing that really gets me most is that Rudy REALLY got s**t on this episode...
He saved his mom, but she can't speak and is a borderline vegetable. He lost his left hand to the hydra fight. AND his dad died to that same monster. I knew this was coming cause I spoiled myself, but man. And this being aired on Father's Day makes it hit even harder.
Pretty gutted by this one. Knew it was coming (had it spoiled ages ago, damnit!).... That battle was absolutely sick and one of the best boss battles I've seen in an anime. Had me on the edge of my seat and holding my breath.
Such a gut punch to lose Paul and then Zenith is not there mentally. Rudy going to be in a bad state mentally/emotionally. I bet Roxy will be there to help him, but that will probably complicate things.

Before hydra's fight, paul said he can't be calm as rudy, can't make an idea or someone as good as him. I think that's why he said "you have to save your mother even tho it would kill you" but I think deep inside, paul will sacrifice himself for his the most proud son cause he value rudy more than him to protect the family because paul good for nothing.
Even tho paul has bad attitude but he is the real man and real father 😭😭😭. Now, rudy become the head of the family.

Put this for Episode of the Year Candidate. Rudy is not battle tested, he clearly needs more experience, even if you’re a mage you have to make moves and think quick. Rudy lost focus, this will be his greatest teaching moment. Now we will see the Full Birth of the Monster that Rudy will become. It’s about to turn up.

If I had to choose whether to save Paul or Zenith, I'm picking Paul every time.
In the anime it wasn't shown well but rudy couldn't tell what was going on his eye could only see what's in front of him
when the hydra got to one head its started wildly moving all its neck and with rudy directly next his eye couldn't process all that information nor could he see all of it.
going even further rudy doesnt have battles aura the ability to coat your body in mana so he can't enhance his speed/strength so its not like he could just duck in out of the fight like paul and the others
funny enough it was because of this battle aura that paul died as a kick he used would actually pushed them both out the way if he didnt have it but ended up leaving paul in place
