i think he means you didn't spend over $500 on it, so its not as good as it could be or not comparable to high end products because of the difference in price.
goddammit I saw your video about 660s and convinced me to buy them, a few hours later I see this video and panicly cancelled the 660s and ordered 58x instead. You are going to give me a heart attack xd
@@spicielinguinie5109 no, it's the same housing, diaphragm, and internal dampening as 559and 579 drivers. It has a different voice coil but still not a 660 or 600 voice coil.
Z Sennheiser replied in massdrop on a link to this video I posted there and this was their reply: "Though the HD 660 S and the HD 58X Jubilee are both dynamic driver designs made from our specially developed plastic, the same impedance ratings, and constructed in the same Ireland factory, they do not share a driver, and are in fact differently produced designs. The difference may not be visible to the naked eye, but the drivers do have different performance characteristics are measurable. The impact of the foam we use is acoustically minimal... the rear foam backing is there for aesthetics, and also it improved durability for the driver in drop-tests (since the driver is mounted differently than the HD 660 S and the models that came before it). The foam does not both “reflect back bass” or “absorb treble” as Steven from Zeos Reviews suggests in the above video; Steven even noted that the two headphones still sound different to him at the 12 minute mark of the video posted above." Edit: May be possible that the little difference you experienced was because the HD660s was connected to a different amplifier in a balanced mode? Have you tried to switch cables and amp between the headphones? That would be interesting to see...
Tests from other sources show that the bass changes when the pads are removed. I am more concerned about that paper...what happens to the sound when it wears away.
I don't think it really matters whether the drivers are the same or not. If they (almost) sound the same then they (almost) sound the same. Nothing more to it...
So that's confusing... He's trying to make a case for how they're different and then at the end says they sound different because of amps and cables. Shouldn't they sound different because they're different headphones? Or are they...
I almost ordered the 660s, literally came here to see your review after having them in my Amazon cart, then this review auto-played. Needless to say I’ve placed an order with Drop for my Jubilees and should be enjoying them in 4-6 months when they finally arrive. Thank you for your service Zeos.
So im late in the game and got these a week or more ago. Didn’t modify it and i liked it, now removed the foam and wow... just wow. I went to an audio store to compare with the 660. No way i can tell the difference. No way to justify the 660s. Completely agree with this review.
Bought these when they were still new and there weren't a lot of reviews up - SO happy with my purchase and glad that the reviews back me up. Best impulsive $150 ever spent.
Was looking for a new pair after having the ath-ad700x for several years. After like 12 hours of video reviews, I came here and realized that the HD58X Jubilee's were active on massdrop again. Not having to wait for these is just the cherry on top. Got hyped for it, and get them here tomorrow. FeelsGoodMan
@@WB-hh1ur I will let you know when they finally get here. Turns out 1 day shipping from mass drop is really like 5 or 6 day shipping. Will save the money and skip that next time I buy from them.
You can easily take the grill off without removing the pad. I performed the mod three or four times and I got the mod down to less than a minute for both sides. Just applying a bit of inward pressure on the grill trim piece and it will separate from the housing. I kept mine stock.
After I made mod on my 58X, all I can say is I am so blown away The transparency is incredible! I put a fine metal mesh to dust proof the magnet hole and I made a nickel sized ring cover to hold the mesh
You're the only RUclipsr putting out audiophile headphone reviews that I can actually watch, because you don't take yourself too seriously. I mean you do, but you don't... Anyways, I love your videos. You've convinced me to buy two new pairs this week. The HD58X Jubilee, and the HE4XX. Thanks for not being that audiophile douche bag like so many others, haha.
Hey Robbie! What do you think has a more openner sounding, to get of the room and listen to a open sound seeing the sky, things like that; the 58x or the HE4xx? Both can be listen without a amp? (i haven't...) But i don't care much about volume, i fear to lose my hearing.
I want to share my opinion as I own the 58X and 660S. First of all I bought the 58X because of Zeos praising them highly and for the price they are indeed wonderful headphones, way better than the HD 598 I owned for years. The thing is they are definitely, very different headphones and I can confirm it without even doing an A-B test. 58X have really good and clear mids and a good amount of bass, but it lacks resolution and airyness in the treble region and also the bass is not very clear, it has more bass but not better bass than the 660s. It's also brighter than the 660s. 660S on the other hand has even better mids, more defined bass, great treble, more soundstage, better imaging, better build quality (you can tell just by holding it), better comfort (material in the headband and pads is way better and also the headphone is way less clampy) and it's just more resolving and fast. I'm not saying it's worth $500, but it's definitely better in a lot of ways, I'm definitely selling my 58X. Also took out the foams of the 58X and still the 660S is just better at everything I said. The driver is just not the same, so even if they sound close without the foams, you will still be missing a lot of the 660S sound.
For those who ask "6xx or 58x?" Here is a Express review: -HD 58X: a more versatile audio, oriented for a more fun experience especially in bass frequencies. I see these babies on my desk with my games and modern music with compression, like RUclips, a better "all rounder", even with and portable amp/dac for its 150 ohms, easier for everyone. -HD 6XX: I see these ones besides a turntable and a good tube amp. If I compare this with the 58X it's like a 4k va monitor vs a 5k ips with HDR (6XX), a more precise with more resolution sound. It can do a good job with PC, but the requirements it meets are equal or more expensive because not every amp powers 300 ohms. If you consider an audiophile and want to try the 58X on 6XX, do the foam mod on the grills. At the and of the day the world of audio there's no better one, all is matter of what you like. I like my 6XXs since I have the amp for it,but if the 6XX cost the same as the 58X, I would take the 6XX since I see them more for home use. I wish for a mod that make the 58X close up.
I was on the fence about the 58X. This encouraged me to try them. I wouldn't expect them to be better than the $500 pair but the fact that they're so close is good enough for me.
DOOD the 58x are one of massdrop's "in stock" stuff now a bunch of headphones they "made" are shipping within 2 business day now, you even can pay like 15 or so more and get them delivery in 2 business days also, 2 days till a drop for koss esp/95x's starts.. y'all might wanna take a look at them :^)
For me it's either 58X or X2HR. Both seem great and that imaging is tantalizing, but the bass and soundstage of the X2HR as well as being available on amazon in Canada is making me tempted.
Got mine with a cavalli tube hybrid(on sale 175$ as it was discontinued/last drop ). Ill never forget how great that first listen was out of the box with my G8X. As well as when the tube hybrid came in. I figure if im not going all out for a 600 series i could bypass getting a balanced setup as well to cut some cost in my setup. Theyve made fidelio X2 HR an afterthought(ive kept my eye out for 99$) before i own the Fidelio X2 and ive passed up a few years of prime day/deals. Now im getting the 1more "triple driver" as my go to bass/portables. BC i cant justify the X2 as portables/in a shared room/setting. Possibly one day when i can get a topping stack for 500$ ideally with bluetooth 5.0 support i can look on towards a 330$ HD660S on sale...if i want the REAL thing and a balanced cable. Im in no rush and the HP dont seem to be going anywhere. RN i got my sights on a real tube amp, some swan D100s and a Loxjie A30. By next year i can consider a balanced stack once topping releases bluetooth 5.0 "aesthetic" stack to replace the L50/E50 combo which i was looking at up until i realized BT is the future/standard to consider these days when looking towards the best cost/effective/impact setup.
Same here, I'm in the UK and paid about the same. Tempted by the Mass 6XX but I don't think I'll be blown away, I have a lot of more expensive 'phones but the Zen DAC V1 is a very good couple up with the 58X's and it's my go to set up.
I bought a set of M1060's. The day after I got them, I put them back in their case and put my HD58X's back on. I love the HD58X's. They are quite possibly my favorite headphones.
Z is right about the Bass in the 58x. Just got mine in and took of the foam piece and it does have some thump. Some music I EQ to 0 or -2 decibels. But they do sound very good. And you don’t need a amp to power. Theses sound much better then my 598’s. Hope this helps.
Had to grab these and try them myself. Not even a few hours in, adore them, prefer them with the foam in, and think I enjoy them more than the M1060s? The bass and clarity are fantastic. Really appreciate the review, been a while since I had Senns but these things are a steal!
The 660S still sound a little softer in my ears when it comes to vocal clarity (Cowboy Bebop - Flying Tepot) but other than that, the sound stage / imaging is the same
just joined the drop for these Jubilees on a second massdrop round. Returned a pair of gaming RIg 800hd headset I got for the cool atmos experience but they distorted horribly. Google had a massdrop ad. so I pulled the trigger on them. Man, everyone's saying these are beast. I'm expecting to be blown away coming from crappy gaming headset. This vid got me hyped! hope they can run virtual surround well with their "wide" open back sound.
Today I went looking at headphone reviews for a music/gaming headset and stumbled upon this video. That was all I needed to hear. Just ordered a pair, thanks man!
I paired the HD58x with the Fiio K11(the best bang for buck DAC Amp) and I couldn't be happier. You could easily spend over $1000 for a DAC/Amp Headphone setup that sounds the exact same but costs under $300 total.
Thank you for helping me find the gaming and music headphones that I am going to get. I watched both of the videos about the 58x and you have sold me on them! Love all the reviews, Keep up the great work. BTW you're the only person I go to anymore about audio!
Honestly the logical side of my brain. Says sell the auteur (yes I see them back there and I'm infatuated with mine), sell the stax, pocket they $3500 and stick with the 58x/6xx for open and takstar pro 82 for closed/mobile. I'm struggling with decisions
Damn man, I have STAX L300LE + Woo Ges. Freaking ~$2400. I got HD58X right now, listened them with Cavalli Tube Hybrid. Freaking amazing. Honestly, cant say that paying 2k more worth it as much. Cavalli Tube Hybrid ($250) + HD58X($150) = mind blow, and not only for the price. Just in general.
I’m sold, I have the Game One’s for gaming, essentially HD558’s with a good microphone, SHP9600’s, and the Sennheiser HD800S. I think I’ll probably use these the most. I wanted the HD650, and wish I had gone with that over the HD800S’s because they were ridiculously expensive and the HD650’s seem to be 70-80% of the HD800S. I love the design too, painted black, and the covers look classy.
I can't thank you enough for this recommendation. Just got mine in the mail and it took two seconds of use before I turned and looked at half my headphone collection in disgust. The messed up thing is these are the cheapest by far. My only issue is they sent me my pair with a broken wire that has an obviously bent 3.5mm and makes no sound in the left channel. Thankfully I had a spare though. I guess some of those savings are from qc.
" before I turned and looked at half my headphone collection in disgust" HILARIOUS! Happened to me, too. I was like, "Hold...on...why do I like these so much?" after just seconds of listening. I started ignoring my other headphones and skipping them when it was their turn, using the HD 58X even if it wasn't their turn. My biggest beef right now is with my Shure SRH1840, which are technically better-sounding in every aspect, but the HD 58X have something that's just so tickly to my brain. They go straight towards the pleasure center. It's like the HD 58X reveals this great-sounding "peach fuzz" in the bass, mids, and treble just the right way. Every sound has details no matter where in the spectrum, even if the headphones aren't super bright-sounding themselves, and the musicality is so satisfying. Best $150 spent on headphones. God bless!
I hope you didn't just break my heart with the SRH1840 comment. lmao. I love those and when I got those I realized what I wanted the hd 600's to really sound like. Didn't even think of those but think I may feel the same way you do now. These jubilee's are just an asian massage with a table shower and a happy ending for my ears.
Love your sense of humour and your honesty, you're the best reviewer I had the pleasure to listen to. I ordered the 58x's and I 'm very excited about them although I'll pay some extra being from Europe but still worth it I think lol!
Watched this review and then went on mass drop and bought these headphones... who wants to pay 500 bucks for 660s when these are side close... enough said... thank you zeos
Today i got a pair of 660s. They are a bit better than a 58x. A little bit cleaner and a little bit biger soundstage but they are not 3 times better. When you can get a 660s for 250$ go buy it. Thats a fair price. 500 is ridiculous. I paid 200(used)+50 for headband and earpads and thats a fair price. Thats 70€ more than what i paid for the 58x in Germany.
Well the Audioheaven people measured 58X and the foam lowers peak around 4ks making them flatter. Also keeps dust out. But the drivers on 58X are smaller than 6XX, 650s so they should sound and measure different. They might be slightly different. Of course I like the modular design of 580/600 series, and it cost less to produce them. I like the small waveguides on tweeters on those little desktop spkrs.
Just bought a pair and I hope they are a major upgrade from my Sennheiser HD1's. They should be, considering I am going from 32 ohm to 150 ohm with a DAC!
Well, I've been using a pair of Sennheiser HD 558's for 8 or 9 years now. They still work, but they're definitely worn, and sometimes I get a little static feedback if I move the cable a certain way. I've been wanting to get new ones for a while now, and I was trying to stay away from Sennheiser, because I never thought the 558's were super impressive. I was looking at the Philips SHP's just because it sounded like they were a good, cheap pair that I could experiment with. After seeing this video though, the HD58X Jubilee's sound like a no brainer. I just put my order through on Mass Drop. Looks like they're estimated to ship by April. I can't wait to try these out.
@@WillTheSage headphones are always cheap to make. Companies charge for the research and development of making the product. Bet the stax are only 200$ max worth to produce. Likely less.
i had the same upgrade, 598's -> HD58x and trust me, the difference is VERY noticeable. the hd58x's are so much clearer and have an infinite amount of detail.
Hunter_Scars yeah I belive you. I mean zeos was practically drooling over the 660's in his review. How is the difference in soundstage? From what I've read the 598's are super open in general.
Entenkommando the HD58X's are very close and intimate compared to the 598's. But the imaging is good enough that for gaming that really doesn't matter, at least to me anyways.
Just got mine delivered yesterday. Picked these up on your recommendation, and they have effectively replaced my ATH AD900's. Not as bright on the high end, and I am a treble head, but my god are they a far more balanced headphone. The buy of the century.
Funny because I'm the other way around. I prefer the sound signature of the AD7xxx - AD2xxx. They replaced my HD58x, which has too narrow of a soundstage for me...as well as recessed mids...and detail seems very low.
I got my Sennheiser HD-58X before Zeos review and returned the 660s........ But just bought a new set of HD-660s because they were $100 cheaper ..... I have issues
I have the 650's. I love this stuff but none of it matters after the 650's - I love them and can't tell much difference between the 6 series Senheisers. I'm 55 yrs. old so that's that with my hearing. I do love my Fostex Purplehearts too (and can tell them apart) but only for certain music - the 6 series Senheisers are best to me and my aging ears.
You could even buy a replacement Headband from Sennheiser Spares if you prefer the 660s paint. Mine are in the mail, thanks for saving me $350 :-) I would be pissed off if had bought the 660's too.
Dan Rill Hey, do you happen to know where I can find a headband replacement for the 660S? I could only find it for the 600 and 650, but I love the paint of the 660S.
@@divinecurrent9053 I haven't been able to find the 660s headband on Sennheiser site or eBay etc. The headbands from 600's and 650's fit fine, same band/band but different paint. It would depend if you liked that paint on the available replacements. You could try emailing Sennheiser Spares directly and ask if they're available, I haven't tried that yet. If anyone else has an idea, speak out.
Im kind of confused were you able to find a 660 headband assembly and they are in the mail? or did you get a 600 or 650 replacement instead and thats in the mail? Curious as I have the 58x but i can't stand the glossy finish. Thanks for any help!
He already told me he couldn't find a 660 headband replacement, only the 600 and 650. If you wanted to, you could do a DIY paint job like Zeos did with his 600. I think I might do that as well.
To capture the feeling of putting the 660s in the corner, watch the scene in The Hunger where Miriam carries John's living corpse to the attic. (Your reviews create the wildest associations.)
I took those foam pieces out of the HD58X and I thought it made the sound louder and harsher. So I put them back in. I also disagree with the Sennheiser rep who said it was just a cosmetic thing. And I also think that the HD58x sounds a lot like the 660 S
WELP, that convinced me. Seeing an audiophile struggle to see a difference between this and a far more expensive set of headphones means the HD58X's will seem flawless to my untrained ears.
So, I've had a pair of HD 545 headphones for years, which I've been driving first with a Asus Xonar STX II soundcard, and then an Aune X1s (and yes, that was your fault too). I liked the fact that the HD545s are also 150 ohm, so they're quite easy to drive away from home, but I've just given in and ordered a pair of these... The jump in quality when I got the Aune was quite shocking, given that the soundcard was highly regarded in its own right, so I'm really looking forward to hearing what these 58X Jubilees sound like!
The biggest gripe for me is that massdrop dont't ship it directly to my country Malaysia. I check the drop everyday just in case they change their shipping option. The more I'm seeing these 58x reviews, the more salty I am. Thanks for the great video coverage. Makes me depressed lol.
I have both the 58x Jub's and the 660S....the only difference i can tell is the lower end. Tends to have a bit more depth. Love my 58x tho....with the 150 ohm impedance vs 300, much more versatile.
Zeos, you sir are dangerous for my wallet. I joined the mass drop for the Hifiman HE4XX as my birthday gift to my self this year , and I wanted to try out a set of affordable planars before investing in something like Audeze LCD-2. The day after I see your vid on the HD58X, and pulled the trigger on those too, Damn you :)
so i didnt feel a notice when i took the back foam off, but then i did the inner. i noticed a change. def higher highs, and mids. maybe placebo, but i think slightly better sound stage too.
@@ObeyaCorpsArmory there aren't many good eq's for mac now that are supported or that downright even work. May try the modhouse modification in the future, but it doesn't completely solve the issue from what I am aware.
PA6 GF - Fiber Glass reinforced Nylon It'd be hilarious to see if spray painting the 58X in matte black would make the driver visible. It seems like glare is the only reason its hard to see the driver.
I'm glad I own the HD 6XXs and the HD 380 Pros but I really do want to get a better DAC/AMP I have the original SMSL M6 and it is good. I really want to get the Massdrop THX AAA 789 but I don't know what DAC to get as an upgrade to the M6 before I get a pair of 660s or 58xs. I certainly want to get the DAC and amp upgrades before I replace the 6XXs but I just don't know which DAC I can get for $300 or less that is actually "better" than the M6. I'd like to be able to decode 32-bit 384khz and possibly DSD but as Z pointed out you can't get much in DSD nor MQA online, but FLAC is everywhere. Zeos do you have any recommendation for a great DAC under 300 that pairs well with the AAA 789?? I want the next "upgrade" to be an endgame level for me for at least 10 years but IDK what to pick as the DAC.
I have an HD58X and loves its sound stage and warm tonality. I can't find many ear pads just for them, however. So, the HD600's is an exact fit for the HD58X? Thanks, love your reviews.
in the 58x they didnt put the patent pending ventilated magnet system, if you look closer to the metal outside part of the driver you ill see that the 660s have 4 holes that the 58x dont
Yep, Shimoneta needs a season 2. Unfortunately the voice actress for Thirsty-chan (forgot her name, you know who it is) died a few years ago so it seems doubtful. Bought the 58x and they're being shipped right now! What would you recommend I use to power them as I'd like to get off my on-board.
Nice review, almost got me fired up to get em but I doubt it will come anywhere close to the STAX 300 Anniv. cans i got recently. Going to save up for the Sen 800/800s to get what the soundstage hype is about.
Isn't there a difference in resolution and not only in the frequency curve. Aren't the Driver of the HD 660's the same as in the HD 700? Did Sennheiser really put this tweaked HD 700 Driver into the 58X? I hab them and sold them because I found them too harsh in Base and overall in comparison with the 650's cause it sounded like 650's got a higher resolution, a finer tone to it so the 660's also should be better in resolution? I have no idea don't own the 660's

So, these or the 6xx for gaming? So very likely the 660's were originally hand wound and research was finished, now it is just cost of production, not any engineering needed. They probably make more money from the jubilees than the 660's now
@@astrocslopes863 I know, right? :) That's the reason why i ended up ordering neither one. If i would go the multiple headphones route, i'd rather pick headphones from different manufacturers. Not two phones so similar to each other.

You can easily take the grill off without removing the pad. I performed the mod three or four times and I got the mod down to less than a minute for both sides. Just applying a bit of inward pressure on the grill trim piece and it will separate from the housing. I kept mine stock.
After I made mod on my 58X, all I can say is
I am so blown away

I'm torn between the 58X and HE4XX. Could you give me some insight as to the differences, please?
@@timothy9596 what did you end up getting?
@@alexp3577 I got the 58X. And they're amazing. I'm sure the HE4XX are really good too but I'm happy with my decision.
@@timothy9596 Do you use any dac/amp or is motherboard sound enough?
Isn’t it the same drivers though?
@@JosiahLazaro there's quite a few reviewers saying no
@rainbow did you end up selling the 58x?
For those who ask "6xx or 58x?" Here is a Express review:
-HD 58X: a more versatile audio, oriented for a more fun experience especially in bass frequencies.
Blind test them.
DOOD the 58x are one of massdrop's "in stock" stuff now

For me it's either 58X or X2HR. Both seem great and that imaging is tantalizing, but the bass and soundstage of the X2HR as well as being available on amazon in Canada is making me tempted.
What did you end up going with?
X2HR is king for me
Got mine with a cavalli tube hybrid(on sale 175$ as it was discontinued/last drop ).
Picked up 58X on sale for $149 and a Zen DAC V1 on eBay for $120. Best bang-for-the-buck setup IMO.
I finally got mine after the latest mass drop! Thank you they sound amazing!
Just bought a pair this week, and they're arriving on Tuesday. Can't wait to hear them.
Today I went looking at headphone reviews for a music/gaming headset and stumbled upon this video. That was all I needed to hear. Just ordered a pair, thanks man!
Slayer performance out of HD58X Jubilee without price of 660! Appreciate in depth info! HORNS UP!!!!!!
I paired the HD58x with the Fiio K11(the best bang for buck DAC Amp) and I couldn't be happier. You could easily spend over $1000 for a DAC/Amp Headphone setup that sounds the exact same but costs under $300 total.
This is the reason why Z Reviews is one of the best audiophile channel in RUclips...u r d MAN !!!
Thank you for helping me find the gaming and music headphones that I am going to get. I watched both of the videos about the 58x and you have sold me on them! Love all the reviews, Keep up the great work. BTW you're the only person I go to anymore about audio!
If you are curious about the sound signature on the HD58x's, They sound L shaped. Elevated low end, forward mid range, somewhat recessed high end.
Richard Smith with an amp?
Yeah, the signature is overall very neutral. It just tends slightly warm.
Honestly the logical side of my brain. Says sell the auteur (yes I see them back there and I'm infatuated with mine), sell the stax, pocket they $3500 and stick with the 58x/6xx for open and takstar pro 82 for closed/mobile. I'm struggling with decisions
That is exactly what I'm doing right now, perfect combination... but stax are stax man
@@jaynemirow5812 tough decisions will be made this weekend lol

Damn man, I have STAX L300LE + Woo Ges. Freaking ~$2400. I got HD58X right now, listened them with Cavalli Tube Hybrid. Freaking amazing. Honestly, cant say that paying 2k more worth it as much. Cavalli Tube Hybrid ($250) + HD58X($150) = mind blow, and not only for the price. Just in general.
I've come to love my auteurs and reason has not won out lol. I have sold my stax L700 and my auteur is now my daily driver.
You sure did a good job of convincing me. I was about to lose my mind trying to restrain myself but I'm Glad I watched this and pulled the trigger.
HAHAHAHAHAAHHAA DIDNT EXPECT THAT
I’m sold, I have the Game One’s for gaming, essentially HD558’s with a good microphone, SHP9600’s, and the Sennheiser HD800S.
" before I turned and looked at half my headphone collection in disgust"
HILARIOUS!

Just ordered a set based on this review.
I can't wait to try these out.

victor subido oh well. Either way a great upgrade for my 598's. I really enjoy the Sennheiser sound
i had the same upgrade, 598's -> HD58x and trust me, the difference is VERY noticeable. the hd58x's are so much clearer and have an infinite amount of detail.

Hey Zeos. Any plans of reviewing the Q Acoustics 3010/3020s in the future?
Why not use the TASCAM MH-8 to compare them? Then you would know the only difference you hear is because of the headphones themselves.
Grabbed a pair with a few hours left, been listening to them for a couple days now. Sennheiser is an absolute mad man for this
So, I've had a pair of HD 545 headphones for years, which I've been driving first with a Asus Xonar STX II soundcard, and then an Aune X1s (and yes, that was your fault too).
I really hope the 58x are available at the end of the month.
