As a novice baker and cake decorator, I really appreciate how Jonny discusses technique. Instead of just pointing out whats wrong, he talks about ways to improve and elevate in an approachable way. Its super motivating😊
@thejonnycakes I'm glad you do. It would be so easy to be like BLEH! TERRIBLE! But you're polite about it and explain why it's not top notch. Disappointed of course, but polite lol
I disagree, at one point he criticized them for decorating the cake on the presentation surface without addressing HOW you’re supposed to move a fully decorated cake without messing it up.
Actually the Icing Artist has been doing exactly this for years! If you enjoy these, you'll enjoy the big binge you can get of them there! Love that Jonny is doing it too, because bakeries in different areas will all be so different.
Okay but I love how much this shows personal preference, how one cake is perfect for one person, and another for someone else. That third cake is absolutely my favourite aesthetically and if I asked for a jack o lantern cake, from those three, that's what I would've pictured. Thanks for sharing :)
The face on that third cake made me go, "Awwww!" Like, it was just so adorable. I mean, they were all adorable. But that one just made me happy. Looks like I have a bakery to try when I'm in California next time! Two for two? I'm in!
I like how you were so nice to everyone instead of coming in with criticisms first. You are always so positive!! It is refreshing to see, and makes me realize how much I expect negativity in "review" type videos
The way my sensitive ass would have started crying hearing the spray paint constructive criticism more than I would have if you just called it straight up ugly because not you clocking it immediately like that 💀
So far from all of the onse I have seen during this series the only one I have acctually thought "yes I would totally pay that" for a cake is the first one. LISSTEN I know how expensive it can get to make and that art takes skill and practice but clearly those other two cakes didn´t have to cost that much since the first one was both better AND cheaper! In fact I would gladly pay the prize for cake one AND two just for cake one.
You said “Surprise me” and they came up with that? Yes please! I hated the vining on the third one and the second one looked squashed, so on looks alone the first one was a winner. Can’t believe they made such an elaborate filling inside it!
FYI: Pumpkin actually has very little flavor. What makes pumpkin pie taste good -- and what we think of as "pumpkin flavor" -- are actually the spices added to it. These are usually cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves, or variations of those. You can also cheat and get either "All Spice" or "Pumpkin Spice," too. I've seen some that have no ginger, others that have no cloves. My own has all four.
I would pay that price for #1. They did an excellent job airbrushing and I love the flavors of the cake. I would take 1 point off for not tapering the bottom more. But otherwise it’s perfect.
@sadem1045 No one forces you to get one. But if you ever wanted one, you should be willing and ready to pay for people's time, skill and ingredients... It's absolutely worth that much, it should be more tbh. Labor doesn't come free and people deserve to be paid a fair wage. Occasion has absolutely nothing to do with it.
I like that all 3 have different vibes. Like I could see the 1st one on my aunts table at a Halloween party for wine moms, the middle one for a kids Halloween party, and the third one at a work party. All are fun.
I find it really interesting that the cake that was the most expensive performed the worst. People who have a lot of passion are everywhere and not just the super expensive shops
Girl what, a licorice cake sounds like one of the worst most traumatizing cake flavors possible. Imagine doing that intentionally. If someone gave me a slice of that I'd actually start weeping.
Did the red velvet mocha cake have anise or fennel in it? Sometimes those extracts/ingredients can mimic the taste of licorice with certain taste combinations/profiles.
I like how you took more than one bite of every cake. Usually you get a more precise taste after the second bite or third, which is actually the reason why you took more than one bite. You wanted to make sure you were tasting it correctly and I can appreciate that!
Don't say you're not brilliant! There are different kinds of intelligence and yours is clearly artistic leaning. Your work is stunning and takes a deep breadth of specific knowledge. Slay on, Queen!!!
Number 3 probably would have been really good if they took pumpkin cheesecake and whipped it with a bit of butter cream. Or even just pumpkin pie filling(fully cooked) mixed with the buttercream. My one sister in law also makes a stunning pumpkin mousse its light and lovely and rich. She puts grahm crumble and a drizzle of salted caramel. It would be stunning as a cake filling.
Jonny I remember watching you on Is It Cake and then you showed up in Try Guys videos and now every-time I see that you are in a video I get so excited! Keep being you and can’t wait to keep watching you! ❤
coming in for 2025 Halloween - "fresh pumpkin puree" could well be exactly what you got in cake 3, cuz fresh tastes like almost nothing - you need to bake it down by a factor of TEN to get rich pumpkin flavour [= pumpkin butter] and then spice it and sweeten it... [I just did this two days ago]
I wondered if the red velvet cake's flavour was a halloween trick...the bakery forced you to choose a flavour, then they changed the flavour...but Cake Twink says it really is Mocha...okay...
It's fascinating to see all the different interpretations of the jack o lantern! Especially to see the different shades of orange/yellow and brown they use. I am a Baking and Pastry Arts student and we recently had to make a fall harvest themed cake to show off the fondant skills etc. and I'll admit, I spent so much time trying to get that nice shade of orange. Didn't end up getting the shade I wanted but it was still an interesting looking cake! Anyways, I love these kinds of videos of giving the bakeries the same theme and letting them just go with it! (Oh I do think the eyes not being level on the third cake is honestly realistic. Let's be honest. When we carve pumpkins, they aren't always perfect)
@thejonnycakes It's been really fun! There are definitely things I am enjoying more than others. Started a new class this week for Hotel and Restaurant Desserts. I think I like making the cakes and simple decorating over the super detailed kind of decorated. I can make you fondant/gum paste flowers but I will not be happy if you ask me to do it out of buttercream.
3:46 I was just waiting for this the whole time I definitely noticed early on how they matched and how good the color was matched if the teeth in the cake were shaped differently I might not be able to tell them apart
I noticed that I tend to avoid watching review style videos because people are so critical in them; but, I figured it is a Jonny Cakes video, and I've never seen you be even remotely mean, and was pleased to find that my hunch was correct!
The first one is the cutest visually! But if I saw all three in a shop the one I would expect to taste the best is the last one for that frosting alone. I also think its cute
Ok so I won't lie I actually really like how cake 3 looks HOWEVER for a professional cake making business and for that price they sold it at, IT IS RIDICULOUS that it looks like that. I like how it looks because I like the more cartoony look it has compared to the others and also like how it is a bit more homemade looking. Like if my mother or friend made this for me I would adore it. However for over 200 dollars and it tasting blander than air, come on lol A really interesting idea for a cake for Christmas could be those vintage ceramic Christmas Trees that have lights! It would be interesting, either for you or for bakeries, to try and do!
My brain is fried from work, so no intelligent comment from me today, just wanted to say that (with Eugene gone) you're my favorite Try Guy and it's not even close! Love your mix of self-deprecating humor, sarcasm, and wit. But of course I love your individual videos, too. Also it's wild that the most expensive cake looked...NOT as expensive as the others, lol.
When I saw the caption I thought you were saying all the cakes cost over 600 bucks and you had me SPOOKED 😂 the cakes were totally worth their actual costs though imo, each one was absolutely fantastic with so much detail!😊
Do you know Laurie, TheIcingArtist? She does a similar series on her channel! She’s also held “Is it Cake” episodes and you should totally collab with her!
I'm not Gay, but I would love to be Jonny's Cake Twink for an episode. Jonny reminds me of my Gay friends so much. He's making me miss them. Unfortunately, I have no way to get in touch with them anymore.
I've heard of apple cake -- which is yummy, but would never work in a layered cake because it has the texture of a cobbler and is usually served that way, i.e., as a single layer in a 9"x12" pan. I'm going to have to look into apple pie cake.
When I saw cake number 2, my first thought was that maybe the baker watched your original jack-o-lantern cake for inspiration! ... Then they baked it and it flopped 🤣
Yay! I love watching these cake reviews and all your knowledge! These help me consider what things are important to me if i ever order a cake like this! 😊
Cake three just makes me feel happy, it looks cute and the inside flavours make sense. Cake one is so intimidating that I feel like a failure in my own life. Cake two is the cake I'd eat to feel better about being destroyed by cake one because the disappointment reminds me how my parents must feel 😂 x
I’m pretty sure the airbrushing on the keyboard was intentional to make it look like a shadow because it’s also on the very bottom of the cake and also a lot of those pumpkin candy buckets are shaped like that because last year all the rounder ones sold out and that shaped one is all I could find in the real candy buckets
Someone said make a realistic turkey cake for thanksgiving… I think you should make a realistic turkey, and realistic plates of thanksgiving food cakes and set it all up on a table!
Cake twink is my favourite cake. He’s a dreamboat. If you mean cake-cake, I could pretend to have an elevated palate but let’s be honest, I’d eat any of them. Standing in the light of the fridge, middle of the night, fistfuls of icing… the full raccoon.
I actually looked the outside of cake 3, it reminded me of the cakes we get in Europe, but the filling of cake 1 just sounds delicious! LOVE pecan, caramel and apple. I was rooting for number 2 since I would get mini mocca cakes as a kid at the European bakery in my home country.
It's definitely the inside that counts, I've known so many cakes that cost hundreds of dollars (or more) that tasted AWFUL or were so focused on elaborate fondant decorations that there was barely any cake. This is actually the reason I don't eat cake at parties or events anymore because it's rare to have a cake that's pretty but also tastes good.
I loved the vines. That might have been my fave if they had made the cake board dirt, and the pumpkin is coming out of it. But you gotta love the treat bag one! Even the candies inside were color coordinated and arranged perfectly.
“Zach could have made that… I hated it” 💀💀💀
I was so wrong for that lol
@thejonnycakesBut so right 😂
@thejonnycakes
I appreciate your replies
I died 😂
As a novice baker and cake decorator, I really appreciate how Jonny discusses technique. Instead of just pointing out whats wrong, he talks about ways to improve and elevate in an approachable way. Its super motivating😊
He’s the best🥹🥹💛🌼
I really try to give constructive criticism. I don't just wanna be a Simon Cowell. Heheh
@thejonnycakes I'm glad you do. It would be so easy to be like BLEH! TERRIBLE! But you're polite about it and explain why it's not top notch. Disappointed of course, but polite lol
@Cheesegoddess❤
I disagree, at one point he criticized them for decorating the cake on the presentation surface without addressing HOW you’re supposed to move a fully decorated cake without messing it up.
A realistic turkey cake for a Thanksgiving episode would definitely put bakeries to the test! Also, I adore your content!
Omg that would be so fun
@thejonnycakes TURKEY CAKE
OMG for at least 10 seconds, JonnyCakes knows I exist! (He said so.)
Yes!! that would be so fun😁😁
or a cornucopia maybe?
For next month, challenge the bakeries to bake a realistic apple pie looking cake, with anything-but-apple flavored cake.
I love this idea.
Ooooo...
Great idea😁
It's giving candid competition! Zach should be nervous! 😂❤
No he literally is so much better than me
@thejonnycakesyou are both lovely and different. 💜
@thejonnycakes totally disagree, I way prefer this more chill approach so you definitely have your audience🧡
Actually the Icing Artist has been doing exactly this for years! If you enjoy these, you'll enjoy the big binge you can get of them there! Love that Jonny is doing it too, because bakeries in different areas will all be so different.
i immediately thought of when trixie mattel commissioned 3 bakeries to make her likeness into a cake!
Okay but I love how much this shows personal preference, how one cake is perfect for one person, and another for someone else. That third cake is absolutely my favourite aesthetically and if I asked for a jack o lantern cake, from those three, that's what I would've pictured. Thanks for sharing :)
I fucking love art. It's THE most subjective.
Same. I would have went with the 3rd one on looks.
I agree! I liked the proportions of 3 a lot and it was cute! 2 was cool because it was fun and different but to me didn’t quite hit the brief.
Plus buttercream tastes so much better.
The face on that third cake made me go, "Awwww!" Like, it was just so adorable. I mean, they were all adorable. But that one just made me happy.
Looks like I have a bakery to try when I'm in California next time! Two for two? I'm in!
Butter crushed both. They're truly my two fave cakes ever
If I was to pick a cake for my party, third one wins for sure!
I like how you were so nice to everyone instead of coming in with criticisms first. You are always so positive!! It is refreshing to see, and makes me realize how much I expect negativity in "review" type videos
I try to be constructive!!
The way my sensitive ass would have started crying hearing the spray paint constructive criticism more than I would have if you just called it straight up ugly because not you clocking it immediately like that 💀
Should I try to respond to every comment again? Let's do it!
Omg so this means for 5 seconds in the space time continuum THE Jonnycakes will know I exist and love him 🥰🥰🥰 yay
@backwardglances 10 seconds at least!
@thejonnycakes omgggggggg🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I love how they MADE you choose, and then messed up the flavor🤣, or maby that was the suprize element.
The second cake probably used anise extract in the icing. Anise and black licorice can taste VERY similar.
You said “Surprise me” and they came up with that? Yes please! I hated the vining on the third one and the second one looked squashed, so on looks alone the first one was a winner. Can’t believe they made such an elaborate filling inside it!
The filling in the first cake made me question my abilities as a baker. The second and third... not so much lol.
I would pay that price for #1. They did an excellent job airbrushing and I love the flavors of the cake. I would take 1 point off for not tapering the bottom more. But otherwise it’s perfect.
Butter is just Better
I think the cake is beautiful, but unless it's a wedding cake, a food item should not cost $100+.
It’s a bad idea to keep watching your videos on an empty stomach, you make me want to eat an entire cake in one sitting lmao
Bahaha my apologies.
I wish the first cake maker sees this video
I like that all 3 have different vibes. Like I could see the 1st one on my aunts table at a Halloween party for wine moms, the middle one for a kids Halloween party, and the third one at a work party. All are fun.
Okay honestly go off. So smart
$200+ for a work cake, heck nah lol ima go to Costco
“Thank you, cake twink.” 💀
(Too many cute people in one location)
Awww
that first one was visually my favorite. for the texture alone. but jonny is so cute in hs onsie.🥰
Hi army! 💜
@sope_worldOT7 is he tho? Hehehe
@thejonnycakes ofc, we love a cozy Jonny enjoying his cakes. 🥰🥰
@weakanklesfornamjoon HI ARMY! 💜💜
Yeah I don't know but there was something that I just loved about the first one, and then the flavors sounded amazing!
I relate to the second cake, a lot of sweetness on the outside to mask the darkness inside. A true middle child. Love you Johnny!
I'm so glad you see yourself in that cake
Cake 1 is so beautiful and sounds delicious! I was shocked that cake 3 was so much more expensive…like, it’s cute but not for THAT much money 😂
I cannot believe how good of a deal Butter is.
I find it really interesting that the cake that was the most expensive performed the worst. People who have a lot of passion are everywhere and not just the super expensive shops
Totally! Prices are weird. In my last video the cheapest cake was the best.
ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!! Expensive does not mean better.
When the producers canceled candid competition, Jonny carried the torch.
He did... something!
Girl what, a licorice cake sounds like one of the worst most traumatizing cake flavors possible. Imagine doing that intentionally. If someone gave me a slice of that I'd actually start weeping.
I almost couldn't swallow it.
@thejonnycakes If it makes you feel any better I experienced it spiritually.
Sounds yummy to me, but I’m from the nordics where we like licorice and salmiak 😋
Did the red velvet mocha cake have anise or fennel in it? Sometimes those extracts/ingredients can mimic the taste of licorice with certain taste combinations/profiles.
oh my days i made it in 1 minute
Welcome to the Early Club
0:43 he's so derpy and I love him so much (talking about the cake)
"I relate to this cake" 😂
i love the look of the third cake, honestly aesthetically my favorite
The second one read more like a fabric pumpkin bag. I know that it’s not reading plastic bucket, but it’s like a kids trick or treat baggie!
So true. Someone else said the same thing. Lets go with that!
#1 needs to raise their prices! Everything about it was beautiful but what really got me was the layers so perfectly even!!
I agree. They deserve to be compensated more for their art.
I think cake 3 is super cute and I do prefer buttercream over fondant, but it is surprising that it was so much more expensive
Totally understand why you prefer buttercream. Have you ever tried modeling chocolate? Similar to fondant but tastier imho.
@thejonnycakes Not sure that I have, but I'm pretty sure I've seen other baking channels use it. Will have to try it someday :)
The fact you had one of the best cakes you've ever tasted in your life and then instantly followed it up with one of the worst... Perfectly balanced.
I like how you took more than one bite of every cake. Usually you get a more precise taste after the second bite or third, which is actually the reason why you took more than one bite. You wanted to make sure you were tasting it correctly and I can appreciate that!
I am so glad you noticed that! It’s true! (Also I just love cake) (MOST CAKE)
@thejonnycakes That's so awesome! When I see judges taking one small bite, I always think, "I'd eat the whole thing and go to the next one! Yummy!"
I think the second cake the base airbrush was intentional to look like a dark shadow
my favorite part about watching your videos is to see how you respond to so many comments and are so sweet. you deserve all the good things
It would be stunning as a cake filling.
the winner was aesthetically my favorite. i feel like the second one should’ve gotten a 7 in looks bc it was WAY messier
Jonny I remember watching you on Is It Cake and then you showed up in Try Guys videos and now every-time I see that you are in a video I get so excited! Keep being you and can’t wait to keep watching you! ❤
I'm so glad you still aren't sick of me!
coming in for 2025 Halloween - "fresh pumpkin puree" could well be exactly what you got in cake 3, cuz fresh tastes like almost nothing - you need to bake it down by a factor of TEN to get rich pumpkin flavour [= pumpkin butter] and then spice it and sweeten it... [I just did this two days ago]
After watching Butter Cake Shoppe win twice, I NEED to taste one of their cakes.
They are truly my all time fave
I absolutely love cake three. It reminds me of something my grandmother would have made. She loved to do buttercream designs.
A dynamic cake. Something with moving elements.
I adore this idea
That's such a good point about the eyes! How are you enjoying pastry school?
@thejonnycakes It's been really fun! There are definitely things I am enjoying more than others. Started a new class this week for Hotel and Restaurant Desserts. I think I like making the cakes and simple decorating over the super detailed kind of decorated. I can make you fondant/gum paste flowers but I will not be happy if you ask me to do it out of buttercream.
Been binging your videos and I gotta say I enjoy them a lot more since the introduction of Cake Twink ❤
the eyes being uneven / not level on the third cake for that price is insane 😭
And I ope
Black Licorice is Valkyrie fuel for processing souls into the underworld.
The description of the 1st one!!! I would DIE to try that cake!!! It sounds so good! Im a sucker for cardamom!
@cevichegrace He’s also comprehensive and not rushed, covering everything like it’s a project.
Aww thank you. I try not to be needlessly cruel for views.
The first one is the cutest visually! But if I saw all three in a shop the one I would expect to taste the best is the last one for that frosting alone. I also think its cute
Smart. I get that. Fondant isn't my favorite but its easy to eat around.
However for over 200 dollars and it tasting blander than air, come on lol
A really interesting idea for a cake for Christmas could be those vintage ceramic Christmas Trees that have lights! It would be interesting, either for you or for bakeries, to try and do!
I agree. 3 is the only one that I think is overpriced!
2:49 you can yell
Okay I will thank you
Loved how cute the first pumpkin cake is! Simple design perfectly executed and those flavours, yes please!
The transition at 11:41 🥰😂😐😷🎃
No im such a random girlie
Hey Jonny! 🩷💅🏻🍁🍂
I hope you can find some time to relax in the next few days! Don't work too hard!
Thank you for the kinds words.
@thejonnycakes I should do some work over the weekend, but I probably won't 😂
I loved the design on the first one.
I’d love to see you make a 10/10 version of the cakes you try and see if you can out-cake them!
Have you seen the YT short where I make a candy bucket cake? I posted it last year.
When I saw the caption I thought you were saying all the cakes cost over 600 bucks and you had me SPOOKED 😂 the cakes were totally worth their actual costs though imo, each one was absolutely fantastic with so much detail!😊
You think I'm made of money!? Haahha
Would love an advice/tips and tricks/history with baking video from you!
I know everyone probably feels this way but this channel just makes me want cake
That means im doing my job right
"It's giving orange."
Yes, Jonny, I noticed that as well.
8:58 uh CAKE THREE is also a try guy now, so who needs geniuses and scholars? A try guy who defends the hotness of cartoon lions, thank you very much
Hahahaha
Genius is overrated
The first cake is so great!!!
The 1st cake definitely looked the best! Glad it was 1st place in taste too!!! 😊
Nom nom nom
3RD ONE THEY EYES ARE REALLY NOT AT THE SAME PLACE IT'S BOTHERING ME SO BAD love u lmao
Do you know Laurie, TheIcingArtist? She does a similar series on her channel! She’s also held “Is it Cake” episodes and you should totally collab with her!
I love the Icing Artist!
I'm not Gay, but I would love to be Jonny's Cake Twink for an episode. Jonny reminds me of my Gay friends so much. He's making me miss them. Unfortunately, I have no way to get in touch with them anymore.
Yesss I love these cake comparison videos! I think it would be fun to see you guess which cake is most to least expensive, too and reveal at the end?!
That's so smart. I should start doing that.
I've heard of apple cake -- which is yummy, but would never work in a layered cake because it has the texture of a cobbler and is usually served that way, i.e., as a single layer in a 9"x12" pan. I'm going to have to look into apple pie cake.
Yay! It's always a great day when Jonny posts! :D
Aw I'm so glad you're here!
Wait I actually love black licorice, I would probably like that cake ahahha
omggg your outfit 😭😂🖤
Just rolled outta bed
The second cake with the liquorice flavor was literally trick or treat the candy was the treat the liquorice the trick
When I saw cake number 2, my first thought was that maybe the baker watched your original jack-o-lantern cake for inspiration!
... Then they baked it and it flopped 🤣
It's all about TRYING hehe
I liked 1 and 3 the most (visual) and 3 would be my winner I think, I like the natural look and the vines!
Yay! I love watching these cake reviews and all your knowledge! These help me consider what things are important to me if i ever order a cake like this! 😊
Maybe you need to order one!?
You should get bakery’s to make pool cakes! It would be cool to see ware slides or diving boards or to see how they would make the water!
I cannot get over how many people love cake 3. I get it. It's novel and sweet. Childhood memories?
Who are you Michael's? A Halloween video two months before Halloween?
I'm not mad at it.
That first cake flavor sounds fantastic! 🎃
It was! I am still dreaming about that salty and sweet flavor combo.
I actually love cake 3. It's SO ADORABLE.
Omg I didn't think of that! Good call.
i like the 3rd one best when it comes to looks for a event but the first one for the flavors
Someone said make a realistic turkey cake for thanksgiving… I think you should make a realistic turkey, and realistic plates of thanksgiving food cakes and set it all up on a table!
A full feast with sides and everything
That first pumpkin overall sounds great
Which is your favorite cake? 🎃 🍰
Honestly I prefer the third one 'cause it's a special child 🤣 (also shinyy)
Number 1 for sure - Butter is killing it!
I’m surprised you gave them full reign and they all chose to do very similar designs! Love how respectful you are when judging!
got school work to do but cant wait to come back to this and watch!!! love watching your videos & commentary ♥︎
I don't want to be the reason you don't do your homework!
You are such a fair judge.
Have them make a cornucopia for thanksgiving
I might have to
I actually love the 3rd cake the best. The craftsmanship is the best
thank you cake twink
We couldn't do it without the Cake Twink
The bucket look of the second one reminds me of a felt/fabric pumpkin bag we used to have.
They look delicious 😋 I want some!
Edit: Oh. Well, only the first one is delicious apparently 😆
I had so much leftovers. My friends are lucky.
Oreo dirt would be so cute.
