Been hooked on all these videos, never thought of hunting till I watched your videos. Bought first compound bow in hopes to dabble in a little hunting here in Australia. Hope it’s as good as you guys have it 😊. Love your videos.
When the elk are quiet I stay quiet, maybe a very soft cow call. They changed up a lot after wolves were reintroduced. I’ve noticed they stray away from calling if they are quiet, I think it’s because they know it draws predators to them. . I also quit crashing after them if it’s open. I find I just burn a lot of energy with little result.
Born and raised in idaho, you've inspired me to start my oun channel, it will be private but its going to he a fishing channel, ill also feature deer bears foxes snakes and lizards, me and my sister are going to be co owning the channel, i will only kill fish, but herp for reptiles, this is all in private land owned by my grandmother and grandfather, there are so many cool animals there and i love to fish there, i catch my own bait, thank you for your videos, they have inspired me so much!
One of the great satisfactions from doing everything on your own and when you are learning a long the way is when that day finally comes? Best. Day. Ever. Good Luck/Stay safe rest of the way!
If you're following elk that are responding to your calls but still going away, keep following them. They are more than likely heading to a bedding area and the bull may break off from his cows and come in once they get there and bed down.
Maybe wait to call once you are closer. Under 100 yards. His attention was caught when you called. The distance was wicked far. Chance he saw movement as you went to close the gap that he wasn't comfortable with to want to come closer. 🤷🏻♂️
I hope y'all continue sharing your hunting experiences with us! I really enjoy following a husband and wife hunting team on their hunting adventures as they grow as a couple and as a hunter. Good Job! Keeping in mind that I'm a late season rifle elk hunter, I mostly use a "in-heat" and "where are you" elk cow call to locate satellite bulls or an entire herd. Personally, I would follow that brook up the mountain. Sooner or later, you'll find signs where elk have been using it. When the pumpkin patch arrives, bulls normal head to high country to get away from the hunting pressure.
I kept hitting this one logging road opposite a cut block here in the Nicola Valley in BC over 20 times in 3 months and there was never anything there but I'm that law of averages cat that keeps going to that place because at some point something will show up and it did last week, a young 6 or 700 lb bull moose staring straight at me 60 yards away, now my freezer's full, it took for fucking ever, but now I can sit on my ass for awhile, I just made a shitload of bone broth from his legs and I couldn't be happier, it's a random universe so good luck and don't stop for shit gang!
Great video thank you guys I'm hoping to next year do my first DIY elk hunt and you guys are giving great information. Later this month I'll be doing an archery hunt in Pennsylvania with my daughter
After watching all your recent elk hunting videos, I caved in and bought my first compound bow. I can’t wait to eventually go hunting with it next season!
Hey Allie! I have a quick question. I have a mission bow in the purple splash finish and I was wonder if I could hunt with it even though it’s purple? It’s purple black and grey and has, like I said, a splash pattern. If you would take a minute to look it would help a lot! If you wanna take a look on the website, pick the radik bow on missionarchery.com and pick the purple finish. Thanks for taking a minute to read my comment it means a lot! Have a good day!
You certainly can hunt with that bow. Check out all of the wild colors others put on their bows. The key is movement. Prey animals can spot movement not colors. I've taken deer from the ground while dressed like a pumpkin. It's all about movement.
I feel like it’s so hard to know when to bugle and when to cow call!😩 Good luck this season, I could use some too! Lol trying not to give up hope yet, but I’m thinking this year is a bust for me for bow.. I’ll have better luck with rifle!
Get the elknut app. Paul medel goes in depth on elk vocalizations and how to read your calling situation. The goal is always to play on the bull's senses. Less is more
@@OutdoorsAllie Yeah my elk hunt was from 09/12-09/27 in NM. Got nothing, too dry but did get within 80yards of a little herd of 4 and they booked it, couldnt get a shot sucks. it was fun though love it!
In open country there is no need to cow call or bugle when you see the Bull... Just sneak in and get as close as possible. You guys cow called and gave up your location and he did not see ay elk. If you can see him, he can see you (or your location)... On that guy I may have had my partner stay back at 800 yards and bugle every once in awhile in some trees and the shooter try to stalk into bow range and get him.. Open country is tough!!!!
Well all hunters think same way I think, if u are really hunting. It's the what if question and that's what keeps us going. U could have called some but it's hard to say if anything would have changed
Been doing this a long time, since 1986.....so, One simple bugle was just a location bugle, that is simply saying hello, then the bull hears you moving his way, not good, he thinks you are a bull rushing in.....Instead you need to create a fight situation or a cow gathering situation... or you are just simply giving up your position, and become a threat in moving his way..... (cow Gathering Situation) - your partner should have stayed there and set up (out of sight) as a pesky timid satellite bull and either lip bawl bugled or cow gathering bugles and rubbed (no cow calls at his location) - staying 200 plus yards away as not to be an immediate threat....understand that all these satellite bugle calls your partner is making are talking to cows - not the real bull, these are not challenge calls, the real bull will hear him, but not as a threat, while you closed the distance and used social cow calls followed by a gathering cow call when you got into the timber, putting you between the bull and the satellite bull (your partner) making the real bull have to make a snap decision to get to the cow before the satellite bull does, realize the real bull can hear you walking his way, but if your partner (the satellite bull) stays put he may think he is hearing a cow, so he may just stay.....this creates a realistic elk scenario, that can get the bull to move your way, likely running in to gather the cow, which is the most critical thing in archery elk as they can hear you walking at 150 yards, it is so important to get them to come the last 50 plus yards to get a good shot, then you cow call at full draw to stop him, please no moving shots.....again, just saying hello and giving away your location, rushing the bull, gives the bull no reason to close any distance your direction, this does not work in archery elk or Turkey hunting.... especially if he has cows he will use his first instinct and simply move away....calls and understanding what they mean are so vital to archery elk....I have shot 17 bulls with my bow including a huge 6x6 (354) with 21 inch royals this year....recommend you watch the Elk Nut, and get the app, as he explains all call meanings and many scenarios.....nothing more important to archery elk than understanding the calls, the meaning of each and scenarios which may move a bull your direction.....highly recommend Phelps reed calls (I prefer the grey one) as I can both bugle and cow call with the same reed.....great to see you out there, giving it all, keep up the hard work....sorry for the long answer, but you did ask for info, hope this helps in the future...remember no one can match elk when it comes to smell or hearing, and only maybe sometimes in vision....and you cant shoot even half as far as they can smell or hear you walking...so you have to fool them with a realistic calling situation, or you will loose 99.9% of the time.... seeing or hearing them at a distance as you did will just become very frustrating in time....so things to think about and work on.......good luck in the future....
Try a decoy, lots of good ones out there.. I like to use cow calls when I'm moving, it keeps them interested, just keep your head on a swivel, sometimes they come in silent, they know right where you are when you're calling.. One small tip; imagine a rope between you and Nick and that rope is about 3 feet long, stay tight together, when moving in on them, if you're the shooter, Nick has the decoy.. This works well when cow calling..
Glad to see u guys out west. U guys should just stay out here. Hey sometimes chasing them elk in the cedars can be really good. Not telling u guys what to do. Just might be a option
Sad thing to say but you can’t walk in like you guys did😢!! Those elk will always see you in the open areas. The cow estrus call would’ve been good in that scenario..
@@OutdoorsAllie Depending on the wind you would have to use groundcover or tree cover to get in on those animals. The esters call would’ve pulled him down a little bit closer to you at least. Have try hunting in a little more covered areas. That ground you guys where hunting in is more set up for rifle hunting.
I'm 15 minutes into the video.... I feel ya. I really do. Can't tell you how many times I've sat there and had those "WTF do I have to do?" conversations with myself. Still looking for my first also. Be back after the video is over... Ok, my very non educated thoughts. I carry a decoy, especially in open areas where they can see. I've felt that if they hear something, they want to confirm it. I'm agreeing with you regarding the bugles for the most part. But then again, every situation is different and I keep seeing videos or getting clips from my buddies on these bulls that come running in. I always consider thermals. In the mornings, I'm trying to start as low as possible, working my way up. By the evenings, I'm higher up, working my way down. If I can get on the same elevation as the elk, that's the best. Lastly, I'm to the point now where I can get them within 80-100 yards, but having a very difficult time closing the deal. So I think I just need to find a way to pay Corey Jacobson and Donnie to call for me. 😉 I actually did hire a guide for next year. I was at the very last RMEF Benefit out here in CO before Covid-19 hit and was fortunate enough to win a horseback drop camp trip. I'm upgrading to fully guided. My dad is going to be with me, his first trip out here being part of a western hunt and wants to be a part of it as "the camp guy". So I decided to upgrade. I certainly feel the frustration.
Always cow call when you locate the bull. Also sound like a smaller bull, he'll think he can come and take them because he's bigger. If your chasing after a bull and can't get to him. He may think your bigger and doesn't want to fight. Cow call will normally tell you what to do next.
I have always heard once you get them talking to be still and get them to keep talking and they'll come to you that one on the side of the hill I was wishing you had a 7 mm mag anyway we're all in for you keep it up you'll get one🎃🥂🐝

Nick, I have the same Salomon boots. Do you have issues with them getting wet walking through dew covered grass? I do, other than that they are one of the best most comfortable boots I’ve owned.
Personally in open country like that I would’ve stalked in on him without making any calls. He probably would’ve stayed there and fed if you didn’t make any calls after your initial locate bugle
The bull you saw may have been a satellite bull lingering in the same area as the herd bull so he could steal some of his cows. If that's the case, then you're right.. he's probably not going to come from that far for a single cow call. But when they are rutting hard, I've called in a bull across an open meadow a half mile wide on the first cow call, so they will go out in the open sometimes. Bottom line: You never know what them dang elk are gonna do! 😆 ✌
It’s_Tommy yes sir used outdoor research brand for years lately I use kenetrek because they make snow camo . But if you want complete waterproof ones Sitka goretex but see my video on them Their clasp rubs boot but still good ones
Most of the time they won’t travel that far over that open of terrain as they won’t feel as safe. After awhile if the bull doesn’t see a “cow” or another “bull” you are trying to imitate they become disinterested and move on.
Sometimes if bulls are guarding cows they push them away from other bulls especially if the coming bull sound big and mature. Maybe dont bugle so good and sound so bad, maybe a little immature.
Yes moving in cow call. But welcome to Idaho very hard to hunt bull's when there rutting late . Last day of Idaho's archery season they were finally screaming the last hour

Sometimes if bulls are guarding cows they push them away from other bulls especially if the coming bull sound big and mature. Maybe dont bugle so good and sound so bad, maybe a little immature.
Good tip. thanks John!
