I have been there long ago. Yes you can do a day trip, go in the morning, back at sunset. But it is so beautiful , why don't you stay a night and leave the next day..

It is not easy to reach Nagarkot by bus from Kathmandu.
You will get bus for Nagarkot from Bhaktapur.
Nepal Govt - Please start direct bus for Nagarkot from Ratna Park.
