I live in Tasmania and have a modest set of axes of around sixty. The spotted gum is a good handle material comparable to Hickory. The spotted gum is not endemic to Tasmania and the colonial era wood for hafting was the Horizontal Scrub which is also comparable to Hickory with a beautiful grain.

just lined up a handle for a 3.5lb hytest craftsman, getting one i liked was tough. i have another one with the original handle and it has quite a curve. everything ive found seems closer to what you have there. wish i had the tools/space to make my own. cheers for the vid mate

Dad always used Hickory handles in his Hytest and Plumb axes. Dad also had Kelly axes as well and came from Tasmania

Hi Ron...Do you know what timber original Hytest handles were made from? I have a vintage 4.5# Hytest Craftsman with original factory grind, paint, and handle. It looks like hickory to me...but I've seen some photos of spotted gum that it also resembles.

Spotted gum handles are shit. The old fellas only used them if they had too. They are very good at driving big splinters into your hand when they break.
