Opium and opium addiction were a huge problem for China and Chinese populations the world over during the 18th and 19th centuries.
As a British colony stationed along the opium transhipment routes, Singapore was also greatly affected by the drug.
Large portions of the population were addicted to the drug while the colonial government was for decades heavily dependent on the opium trade for revenue.
Join me as I explore the history of opium and its effect on the island and how the battle to eradicate it was eventually won.
