- Trade is a powerful engine for economic growth and development. However, Africa’s role in the global trade market has fundamentally been providing raw commodities in exchange for manufactured goods, thereby capturing a minimal 3% of the global share of trade. In addition intra-Africa trade is relatively low at levels of not more than 15% and this can change if Africa effectively addresses supply side constraints and weak productive capacities, infrastructural bottlenecks, trade information networks, access to finance for businesses, facilitation of trade in services and free movement of people for cross border trade.
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is a flagship project of Agenda 2063 and refers to a geographic zone where goods and services move among member states of the African Union (AU) with no restrictions. The AfCFTA aims to boost intra-African trade by providing a comprehensive and mutually beneficial trade agreement among the member states, covering trade in goods and services, investment, intellectual property rights and competition policy. Globally, countries are concluding Mega-Regional Trade Agreements (MRTAs), thus reshaping and changing the global trading landscape in the process. The establishment of the AfCFTA will allow Africa to strengthen its position vis-à-vis the rest of the world, speak with one voice and act in unison on all continental and international trade issues.
The AfCFTA will create a wider market of more than 1.3billion people a combined GDP of US$ 3.4 Trillion and by the year 2035, the combined GDP of the AfCFTA market, is estimated to be close to US$ 7 Trillion. That means that there are opportunities for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and young entrepreneurs to export across regions of the African continent, and to take advantage of this vast market.. This will induce investments, result in pooling of African resources to enhance structural transformation and the development of regional value chains. Benefits of the AfCFTA include:-
• Boosting employment opportunities;
• Increased food security through reduction of trade barriers on agricultural products;
• Increased competitiveness of African industrial products through harnessing the economies of scale of a continental wide market;
• Increased rate of diversification and transformation of Africa’s economy and the continent’s ability to supply its import needs from its own resources;
• Better allocation of resources, improved competition and reduced price differentials;
• Growth of intra-industry trade through regional value chains and development of geographically based specialisation;
• Reduced vulnerability of countries to external trade shocks by reducing the trade balance deficits of African Countries;
• Enhanced participation of Africa in Global trade and reduced dependency on aid and external borrowing.

When there is prosperity, stability, economic equality , cultural understanding etc. You cant just open all the borders when there such great disparaties between countries. When there is ignorance, mistrust and prejudices. It will cuase an influx to countries that are perceived as doing better which will only cuase major problems and internal conflicts. As a child this was also my dream, my thoughts- I am amazed today and curious as to why I would dream such dreams , have such thoughts ? As I did , A United Africa with a giant armed impenetrable wall around the entire continent to keep out all the insidious white european colonizing murdering thieves. I was like 9 years old , many many years ago. And finally now some facsimile of my dream/vision/thoughts.....Absolutely fascinating. I should very much like to go to Africa , and help. @Mwaniki Mwaniki because each country needs to handle its currency fluctuation else they will have the problem with the Euro which is all the benefits of the currency is dictated by the richest countries and they determine the monetary policy for everyone else and that's why the EU is falling apart at the moment! Started with Greece then Britain then moving onto France.
It will be better if all the countries agree to tie their individual currency to gold for instance but all of them having the same currency is not a good idea...IMO.
@Mwaniki Mwaniki yeah because it practically is, the entire monetary policy of the EU is dictated by Germany's economy and when you have a trading block that large especially since African countries are vastly different it can be a really major problem if monetary policies are not flexible enough to suit each country instead of one size fits all with favours dictated by the big boys!

What Africa need urgently are:
1. A common Defence Pact and a Military High Command.
2. A common Foreign Policy
3. The creating of an “African Currency Unit” representing all the Currencies on the Continent in a basket, with the backing of our minerals such as GOLD and others and hence serving as a forerunner for a common currency later.
4. Borderless Africa for Africans and Friendly Nations
5. The African General Relief Brigade.
Whilst some NATIONS are destabilizing the REGION, ARABS are pressing to acquire parts of the SAHEL from the north. From the South, Whites and the BOERS in SOUTH AFRICA are also fighting to create their own White nations which may enable them to press upwards from the Ocean. This is an acute danger; I hope we Africans can see. South Africans, likewise, Namibians and Francophone Africans are still not yet politically independent because they do not fully own the LAND.
Therefore, the NEED becomes imperative. More importantly we must protect African citizens, Infrastructure, Assets and our Environment. The African young ladies and gentlemen enrolled in the military service of the USA, UK and France could join such a Force. I am confident that Africa can create a Force of about Ten million soldiers to guard against our wealth, whereby the demand for every need should be created and supplied within Africa from African Industries, and not from outside, irrespective of whether the demanded items have less Quality. The creation of such an Armed forces must be purely Pan-African and not in any joint Venture with any Foreign Nation. REMEMBER, THE COMPANIES CAN ONLY GROW OR BE PERFECTED THROUGH R&D. Africa must start to coordinate jointly, the Production of CAPITAL GOODS resulting from creating Platforms for Private and National Engineering Entities. Such Activities must be backed by and with National sovereignties. This thought is imperative of which African Historians may examine and see that this is the right time to embark on such ventures. Please revisit carefully which historical events boosted the Independence Achievements in Africa, especially North, West, and East.
Let us remember what President Mugabe once Said: “We had to arm ourselves under the liberation committees created by the OAU in 1963 - 1964 and so all that could not be achieved through passive resistance could only be resolved through the means of armed struggle. Our fathers shall always be revered for having fought for Unity, a unity with a punch; a unity that said, the ENEMY will not listen, if you said go away because this is our country he will not listen because he came with violence and hence does not listen to any verbal request, therefore we also employed violence and we won to kick him out of Africa, but the story of Uniting the continent did not succeed or emerge immediately.” President Mugabe, a Great Son of Africa, was right. Here, he tells us what we should do and how and when we should do anything. Consider Kwame Nkrumahs book on: “Revolutionary Path”.
South Africa, go for the Land and do not allow any White Nation to be erected within South Africa. South Africa is a Nation belonging to Africans and he who cannot live together as neighbours must quit the borders of South Africa for peace to prevail. The same applies to Namibia. The time is due! Africans simply must take over or make corrections without awaiting permission from anyone. What we seriously must notice is that: Without SECURITY - DEFENCE, there will be no peace and without peace, there will be no effective Industrialization and Without Industrialization there will be no Prosperity, Employment, Economic Freedom, and hence all other THINGS will fall short and there will be no peace in Africa and presumably in the world. Nonetheless, Peace is a mental construct which underlies permanent control. AFRICA MUST UNITE BEFORE THIS WAR ENDS. THIS IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE.

We simply need a strong leader or PRESIDENT WHO IS TRULY a Pan Africanist, well experienced and devout to lay down his life for Africa without expecting any richness in monetary terms. However, irrespective of the many Academic, Professional, and long service most of the Leaders have, I personally think 1963 in Addis Ababa is repeating itself and therefore these are doom days for Africa.

Please look at this idea from a different perspective: what if we stopped non-African goods from coming into Africa and allow Nigeria industry to sell to a larger intra-African market with no barriers?
