'Foreign influence' law obstacle to Georgia joining the EU, says official | DW News

- Tens of thousands of people have returned to the streets of the Georgian capital, to protest against a controversial 'foreign agents' law.
Demonstrators blocked streets in Tblisi, a day after parliament approved a second reading of the bill. It requires organizations receiving more than 20% of funding from abroad to register as agents of foreign influence. Opponents say it's similar to a law used in Russia to silence government critics. The UN's human rights chief has urged Georgian lawmakers to withdraw the legislation.
DW correspondent Maria Katamadze in Tbilisi described the scene in the Georgian capital.

Why shouldn't they protect their country from foreign interference? The US and some EU nations have the same laws.

@@fidodid5721 I believe you'll find that Georgians on _all sides_ of this dispute believe they are protecting their country from foreign interference; so the point you are making doesn't actually get you very far. The dispute is rather about _which_ potential foreign interference presents the greatest threat, and is least aligned, to the (somewhat diverse) wishes of individual Georgians.
Notice that there is no counter protest going on. Really goes to show that this law has nothing to do with Georgia's national interests.

A majority of the Georgian people wants Georgia to be a part of EU. This law will make this very difficult, so of course people protesting... Again...

Georgia is a democracy and the people in parliament are the representative of the people. A mob should not decide for the general population who have nothing to do with politics and power struggle.

Hypocrisy by the EU - The USA and the EU countries have similar laws. It is in the best interest of Georgia to know which foreign countries (if any) are influencing the NGOs. Why are those NGO against, unless they have something to hide ?

Because many among the greater mass of ordinary Georgians _don't much trust their current or future governments_ to use the information gathered under the proposed law in a manner meeting the approval of those citizens.

@@bojanm986 This law is not American, it is exact copy of Russian law, word by word, every single letter, in American and EU law there are mentioned the countries, which are threatening, like Iran and others. In this law, it doesn't matter you get funds from Iran, USA, Japan or EU, you become agent by all means. After that government has right to limit your work or ban your work totally, just because they have doubts. That is what is happening in Russia right now. Even if you post something on the internet that government does not like, they have right to punish you, by fine or even put you in jail. There will be no space for free speech and free media.
Also, of course we hate Russia, 20% of our country is occupied by Russia, So many people died in the wars with them, we have got nothing good from Russia, how can we like it? Would you like somebody who killed your brother, your father and took 20% of your territories?
Even if we are remembered as "a country that hates Russia" it is still waaay better, then "the country that belongs to Russia."

Or the problem is that we will find out the number of organizations funded by the USA and EU? My country doesn't have this law but I would very much like it to have.
By 20% you mean Abkhazia and Ossetia? They wanted independence, they are not part of Russia what's the problem? And if you have a problem you need to blame your "allies" - NATO and EU. They made the precedent that the region of a sovereign country can proclaim independence if they want to. In February 2008 Kosovo proclaim independence from Serbia with full support of your allies, moreover they bombed Serbia so Kosovo can get independence. The whole world said then that it is dangerous precedent and that regions around the world can use it for their own cause aaaaand 6 months later your regions decided to do the same. Question is: why Kosovo has the right to fo it and Abkhazia, Ossetia, Crimea, Donbass don't have the same right?

According to Georgian MP Nikoloz Samkharadze, Georgia has 20 000 NGOs, that's an NGO for every 148 citizens. 90% of the NGOs receive their funding from foreign entities. To put it into perspective, Georgia has 2000 schools that means they have 10× more NGOs than they have schools. They need such a law so these NGOs can be known who's funding them and what motive they might have. The reason certain people are against this law is because it will expose that a lot of these NGOs are funded by one country which is very suspicious to say the least.
Yes, they protest against against transparency which is quite absurd. You'd think they would like to know who funds these NGO's....

Local media outlets funded by foreign organizations should not happen to any country that wants to preserve its independence and sovereignty.
I guess the EU is democratic in allowing elected representatives to perform their duties but the EU is instigating unrest in Georgia.
In Georgia they arrested the owner of the biggest opposition tv station owner and the government tried their best to bankrupt them, almost forbidding advertising on the channel, now that they are getting some financial support from abroad is somehow wrong according to you
The issue is that these kinds of laws have been used for stigmatizing NGOs which are crucial for democratic development of the small Eastern European countries such as Georgia.

@@antony6799 in western countries the same laws don't get abused. They have it because they can. In a more authoritarian regime where democracy is fragile the same law can be used to suppress civil society which are usually sponsored by the western democratic nations.
I even agree with Georgia, as non-governmental organizations are often financed by the EU. some, such as the Red Cross and Caritas, are good; others, such as Amnesty International or the Open Society Foundation, are questionable and politically motivated. most politically motivated should not be funded by a country or a federation like the EU!

How is this a Russian law. The law is the exact copy of a law the United States has that all people and NGOs getting money from foreign countries and NGOs must report as foreign agents.
This law is a clear example of Georgia trying to establish its sovereignty and independence.
As if you have read any of these laws. Georgian law is a copy of russian law. And the context in Georgia and the EU, US warning clearly shows what kind of law is that.
It's no copy of the US law at all. Georgian Dream isn't helping the country establish sovereignty and independence at all. The ruling party is only helping Russian terrorists infiltrate Georgia/Sakartvelo very quietly and it's time for GD to leave or at least scale down its presence in parliament by 50% thus making way for other parties to fill in.

Joining to the EU seems became only political issue and by law you will never good enough for joining. Poland, Hungary, Baltic states and other had issues with freedom and democracy, but it was OK politically at that moment. Now EU is very cautious about expanding, they scare to have another disloyal or economically weak state I think, so only making empty promices.
As Ukranian I see direct references with my country in 2014. Is Ukraine in its international recognized borders and EU member? Maybe rich and happy state?
I wish Georgia wisdom not to get into geopolitical trap between NATO and Russia like it was with my much bigger state and stay neutral country who benefits from all blocks.
As a Georgian I can tell you that these demonstrations are not for getting ourselves into EU but staying away from Russia which we have a tradition for! Georgia is not Poland, Hungary and Baltic states. Slava Ukraini!

@@henriikkak2091 I'm Ukrainian, half of family live in Kiev, half in Moscow region in Russia. I know perfectly well what happens with freedom after such protests overthrough the state and the country turns into a 'special purpose vehicle', I mean a wardog against Russia. Human rights cease to exist, even basic things like you can be stopped on a street by police and your mobile phone will be checked for any calls / messages to your Russian family. If any found, you have hard time. On contrast, in Russia such things never happen, you are free to do whatever you want, you can travel (unlike in Ukraine) abroad to any country, you can work abroad etc. People in Russia are totally free. But probably you wouldn't believe or understand it.
