So affected, enchanted and thrilled by the architecture of Berlioz’ melodies, tempi and orchestrations. One tries not to be caught in the maze of comparing different versions; better to appreciate what different casts bring to this splendid work.

Yes of course you are right. However there will always be certain singers/conductors that excel in performances of any work but as you say it's right to appreciate what different artists contribute to the magnificent music of Berlioz, IMO one of the top 3 or 4 composers of all time.

The first time I heard a live performance of any work by Berlioz was with this opera. A concert performance, the L.S.O. conducted by Colin Davis with Joesphine Veasey as Didon. I was very young at the time and don't remember a lot about individual contributions but such was the impact on me it began a life long love of Berlioz as a composer - IMO one of the greatest of all time

I'm so glad that Philips and I imagine Colin Davis chose Josephine Veasey for Didon in this historic recording. IMO her voice is perfect for the role, a truly great singer very much under appreciated I feel, maybe because she never attained "stardom" like some other, in no way superior, singers.
