  • Many of you, like me, have noticed a ticking or clicking sound on the right side of your 2018-2023 Honda Goldwing when the engine is cold. The noise seems to go away once the bike warms up. But why? I have a new theory as to why this might be happening to so many (but not all) Goldwing owners.

    Cruiseman, so kind of you to mention my channel, and the invite for breakfast. Just some awesome conversation around that table. You and your buddies are the real deal. Again, thank you and Don for the editing advice !! I did notice that the slope of the parking spot could have been contributing to the disparity in height.

    Hi Cruiseman and thank you for this video. I would like to share my experience that just happened (5 min ago) on my 2022 Honda Goldwing Tour (Not DCT) after my second oil change. When I started the engine right after the oil change, I heard the ticking sound (first time hearing this sound on this bike). It was very loud and I thought I was in for some heavy corrective maintenance. I first looked through the service manual and found my possibilities, then I searched on RUclips and there you were again, discussing what I needed. I thought about your oil comment and thought about the order of events that happened during my oil change. I dumped the oil and when I got to my filter, I realized a friend had borrowed my oil filter wrench and had to go get it back. About a 20 min ride each way. Since it was getting close to supper, I got supper on the way for my family and we ate as soon as I got home. Long story short, the bike stayed on the kick stand draining for about 2 hours and a half. I got back to work after supper and finished the oil change... So after watching your video, I immediately started the bike again and let it run for 10 min while having the bike leaning against me on the right side of the bike. Slowly, the noise went away and after 10 min, both sides of the engine sounded the same again. That made my day!. Note that I always park my bike on the center stand in my garage, for space saving and safety. Now, I have another reason... that ticking sound. I believe you are right about the oil! I think it can sound far fetched in a conversation considering Honda's reliability, but I believe it now. I personally never thought Honda would oversee something like that. Anyhow, my problem is gone and I can continue and install the Remus exhaust and the JMC Rocker speakers and Amp. Can't wait to hear this when I'm done! Take care and thanks again for the videos. Hope you get another Goldwing in the near future!

    Hi Chris, a little bit late but here are my findings. I never had that clicking noise until my dealer adjusted the valve clearance. After that, I had the clicking noise on the right side. We found out, that he had forgotten to fix the outlet valve lever (with the counternut) after adjusting the clearance. After that, problem was solved. I think during the assembling process, some bikes don't get the correct momentum on the nuts or aren't fixed properly.

    Hello Cruiseman!
    I too had that clicking sound coming from the right side of my 2018/2023, initially! It never went away on the 2018, even up to the time I traded it in on the 2023, however, on my “23” I noticed I don’t hear the clicking sound any longer. The weather has been quite nice here in San Diego, CA over the past 4 or 5 days, although it’s suppose to rain again Weds, and Thu. I just want to let you know that I appreciate what you do through your vlogs and RUclips videos!!!

    Love Robert’s photography. Been watching his incredible work presenting his recent Faroe Islands trip. Amazing footage. To the Gold Wing height difference. The first thing is ensuring flat surface and no grade difference. The other is visual affect that two presumable congruent objects have sitting at angles next to each other. Since the video demonstrates a straight line it might be surface grade. Both on center stands is another assessment method needed. To the engine tick. When parked in the garage I always place my bike on the center stand. I do hear a very slight tick which goes away after warming. Good stuff Cruise.

    Recently had the ticking on my 2021 Goldwing. Last week, tank was pretty much empty so I pulled into a Buc-ees and noticed their ethanol free gas (might have been 92 octane). Got back on the freeway and made it home. So far I do not get any ticking on the right side... always use the side stand and back using ethanol 85 octane gas. Hoping it stays this way

    Yes, I was told this many years ago when I owned a 1982 650 Nighthawk, it ticked. I was told by my friend who was a power plant mechanic and is now a Master Mechanic that it was because the bike was on its sidestand. it has occurred with other bikes I've owned and used. So I think you can safely say "Its a thing." When on its center stand it does not occur.

    I have a 2024 Gold Wing Tour DCT and purchased it new. I live 1.5 hours from the dealer and it was delivered to my house without a test ride. It had three miles on the odometer. The next day on my first ride I noticed an abnormal ticking noise from the right side cylinder bank. I read forum posts and watched RUclips videos. I contacted the dealer and they said it was normal for this generation of motor. After living with it a few days, I made a video and sent it to the dealer. They said I could bring it in for an inspection and would check the valves, but they didn’t believe anything was wrong. I decided to check the valve clearances myself and they all were right in the center of the specified tolerance range. I also purchased an automotive stethoscope and isolated the noise to the number 5 cylinder (the one on the right side furthest to the rear). A few more days went by and I rode it to the dealer and let them listen to it for themselves in person. They agreed the ticking sound was abnormally loud. I went home and they picked up the motorcycle a few days later and had it for 16 days before I got it back. They contacted the corporate Honda tech center in South Carolina and were told to check several things: valve clearances, cam chain, cam chain tensioner, and to look into the cylinders with a borescope. They did not believe it was an injector issue, due to the location of the injectors relative to where the noise was coming from. The valves were right in the middle of the specified range for all intake and exhaust valves (just as I had measured them). The cam chain and tensioner were fine. The dealer thought they saw something inside the #5 cylinder with the borescope and then removed the head. However, they said it had been an illusion so-to-speak created by oil in the cylinder and everything was fine. They put everything back together and because nothing had been altered, the noise still existed. Then corporate Honda told them to tighten all of the exhaust valves on the right side to the tightest spec value of 0.03 inches. The normal specified range for the exhaust valves is 0.03 to 0.05 inches. Believe it or not, this solved the problem. They probably only needed to tighten the #5 cylinder’s exhaust valves, but they tightened all of them on the right side per corporate Honda’s instructions. I’m pleased the motorcycle is fixed but frustrated with Honda and the dealer, as this noise was present from new. I hope this information helps.

    • @gregs5738
      @gregs5738 Месяц назад

      Addendum to previous post: I got the motorcycle back from the dealer after the exhaust valves had been tightened to their minimum specified clearance and the noise had only slightly abated. I would estimate the ticking noise was about 75% as loud as it had been. I contacted the dealer, who then contacted corporate Honda, and they picked up my motorcycle up and took it back to the dealer. The next plan by corporate Honda was to replace the rocker arms, but my dealer noticed something unusual about the oil journal that supplies oil to the camshaft. It looked too shallow. They were able to convince corporate Honda to send an entire new head, camshaft, and all other parts associated with a head. The new head arrived and the oil journal was in fact 0.006” deeper in the new head. The dealer thought this was significant and it would affect oil supply to the last rocker. Anyway, the entire head and all associated parts were replaced and the problem was solved. I have the motorcycle back and can attest after a couple hundred miles that the noise is gone. The right and left sides sound the same.

    I have had a slight ticking at times, it seemed to correspond more to when the Engine is cold (First start of the day on a cooler day) it’s probably related to the oil viscosity and valve clearance, since it goes away once up to operating temps. I always keep the bike on the center stand when in the garage. The tick does seem to fade after warming up, but does not fade completely. My bike has this noise only on the right side. I will be contacting DFW Honda when they are open next week.

    Hi Cruiseman. I have owned a 2018 DCT from new since March 2019 and it now has around 21000 mile on it. I have experienced the ticking noise to varying degrees over that period. On start up there is usually no ticking. Then as the bike starts to warm up the ticking starts and gradually fades away as the engine continues to warm up to running temp. I have noticed that the ticking is usually at its worst just after it has been serviced and reduces after a while but never goes away. I've no idea why that would be. As for your centre stand theory I'm not sure it is correct. I always park my bike up on the centre stand when garaged or parked over night and only use the side stand if parking for short periods while out and about. On the rare occasions that I have parked the bike on the side stand over night I have not noticed any difference in the ticking sound on start up.

  • @lizdaryl
    @lizdaryl 2 месяца назад

    My brand new ‘23 DCT has started to tick (right side only). The center/side stand theory only makes sense if the ticking noise goes away after the engine has been running for a few seconds. Mine does not go away.
    First noticed it at about 2000 miles. Seems to get worse after the engine gets hot. It isn’t terribly loud, but if it were a solid lifter valve train in an auto any decent mechanic would know exactly what to do about it…adjust the lash.
    On my bike, it is not a sound I want to consider “normal “. I plan to discuss with the dealer where I purchased the bike to get their take on it.

  • @jimcfds

    Hello Cruiseman, I purchased a new 2023 Honda Goldwing Tour DCT in mid July and it currently has around 120 miles recorded. I always keep the bike on the center stand and yes I noticed the ticking sound appearing to be coming from the engine right side. The ticking seems to go away after the engine warms up and the engine sounds appear normal. I noticed the ticking after a cold start and the garage temperature was around 80 degrees F. This was on my second ride from bike purchase. I will continue to monitor and keep the dealer advised. Checking other Goldwing owners, it appears the ticking issue is not rare, but most report the ticking goes away after the engine warms up. I experienced this on a BMW 750IL I owned years ago and it was actually a ticking fuel injector. Thanks for your thoughts in this video. All the Best, James.

    Not a goldwing owner (yet), but am familiar with ticking engines. The oil hypothesis isn't really plausible - that should resolve very quickly once oil pressure comes up, which is typically a matter of seconds. Also, that it tracks the engine coming up to operating temperature points away from lubrication also. I suspect it's a valve tappet clearance issue, or (without me knowing better) it could even be something loose elsewhere in the valve train. Might be worth checking the tappet clearances at some point just for grins.
    I have a scooter (Honda PCX) that does exactly this and always has since new - ticks when cold but quiets down to a nice sewing machine sound as it comes up to operating temp. And that too is probably an artifact of tappet clearances...

For the most part...Goldwing riders are on the mature or slightly older ages (that's bound to generate some burps..ha ha). I have a 2021 DCT Tour UK spec Goldwing that started making a ticking sound on the right side cylinder head at around 1000 miles from new, the bike was always parked on the centre stand in the garage overnight.
    Up until recently I would always fuel my bike with E10 unleaded, at around 4000 miles I decided to run the bike to nearly empty and switched over to E5 super unleaded just to see if it made any difference, the Goldwing will obviously run on E10 or E5 but the difference is unbelievable,
    I was amazed at how different the bike sounded and ran, the ticking sound is considerably quieter, the bike felt more responsive and the mpg improved.
    I now only run my Goldwing on E5 high octane super unleaded.
    Regardless of which stand the bike has been stored on, If I have not started my Goldwing for a while I usually crank it with the throttle wide open first, the injection system won’t allow the engine to fire but will pump the oil round for about 5 seconds, this is an extremely good method to prime the engine with oil prior to starting.

    I have a 2023 Goldwing DCT Tour and originally had a 2019 - the 2019 never had the clicking noise which in fact is a out of adjustment valve lifter. My 2023 started making the sound around 500 Kms. After doing the screw driver listening test to each cylinder head I could definitely tell it was the middle cylinder that has the loose lifter. I took it to the dealer and they won't adjust it until they say it has gone through the break in period. In other words they will wait until I take it in for the first service and charge me for the lifter shimming that is already needing it now. What are the chances that it will tighten up over the next hundreds- miles or kilometers ??? probably zero :( P.S. My brother is a red seal mechanic and he was mystified why they won't adjust it now under warranty)

On my 09 Goldwing I noticed this so I took it off put it in my vice and closed the gap so there was way less tolerance between the kickstand and the hard mount on that the kickstand pivots on. It's not oiling or kick stand usage. These 6th gen engines have insanely high oil pressure. Right at 20 psi more than the 5th gen engines test spec. Check you service shop manual you should have bought when you bought your Wing. It's Hondas crappy trailing rocker arms for the exhaust valves. They used shim and bucket for the intake valves as it should be and trailing rockers for the exhaust valves as it shouldn't be. Stupid move on Hondas part. Trailing rockers always make more noise than shim/bucket. Take the cam cover off and check the exhaust valve clearance and small parts. You will find your tickers/noise. Honda went cheap ass on this engine to accommodate the DCT and meet/maintain eurotrash5 emission standards.

Ten different Honda mechanics checked it out, all said....running smooth and healthy. But, I'm sure you're all like me, you know what you know and know what you hear, right? Well, I had a dealer do a check and adjustment on the exhaust valves. Yes, they were a bit out of specs, paid out of pocket...but about 40% of the noise went away. I still hear it, mostly feel it once in a while when in idle at light or on driveway.....Love everything else about the bike.....but I guess this noise keeps me real. If I could I would trade it for a newer one with no rumble.....I bought 5 year extended warranty just in case.....
