There is no better way, once you get them going on the paste. I make my own paste floats, with long bristles 2 inches, and use no shot down the line. The paste i make soft, and use a piece as big as a 50p piece. When the bristle goes down qickley, a strike brings a heavy carp, every time. A huge weight can be built in no time.

So if you’re fishing overdepth with that much tip showing how do you know when the paste has come off? I’ve been feeding hemp instead of pellets for the last couple of seasons and much prefer it and find it better 👍

The thing is mate i feel I have noticed, if the carp are preferring to be shallow they take the paste off the bottom, so if you strike normally say about a foot and you are fishing say 3 feet deep the carp are two foot off the bottom with your paste so a one foot strike will miss it. You have to strike the whole length of your rig from float to hook, it gets even worse the deeper you are fishing the paste. Also dip your wet paste into your feed, so your paste is covered in the feed, this stops foul hooking the bigger fish as they wont just try to scoop up a single micro or 4 mm pellet they will take the lot. The smaller fish however might however peck at your paste, which will give float movement - ideally dip your paste into 4 mm or even 6 mm pellets with two or three stuck to the outside of your paste 'ball'. Also fish what I call clean water, when it starts to fizz move your swim, throw a few 6 mm pellets to your new swim (for noise) then fish over the top, you will find that often the carp are the first on the bait which is somewhat surprising. Fizz is BAD... have three or four swims and rotate dont fish over the fizz. Try it, if you think Im talking bollox - just do your own thing, but I bet you will be pleasantly surprised.

Putting the hemp/pellets first stops the paste from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
