Watched or I should say listened to this video while working on a sketch for an upcoming video. It’s interesting hearing just how often we all worry about the same things. My goal with my channel is to be able to help contribute to my household financially and something that only my husband and best friend know is, one day, I hope to be in a position where I can take art supplies and donate them to schools, after school programs, homeless shelters, domestic abuse shelters, foster care centers, etc. Before I got really sick, I used to work with pretty much all of those categories and I have watched so many families have to lose everything or give up everything. I know just how healing art can be. I know that often they can get things like clothes and maybe some vouchers for food, but they often have nothing to do. No outlets. So yeah, one day, I hope to support my community through art. One day… P.s Lovely video as always.
That's such a lovely idea, Nikkita! I totally agree that art can be so therapeutic, definitely keep working toward that goal of yours because I have no doubt it would help so many people ❤
"The Art of Up" is definitely one of my favourite books out there, there are so many pieces with variety of textures. And also lots information on developing stories and characters (that, as a writer, I'm very interested in). That's a kind of special little feeling, when your favourite artist is inspired by the same thing you are.♥️ Thank you for speaking of so many relatable things concerning fears and doubts. Battling these voices is hard. Every once in awhile I stumble as a pesky thought comes in: "look, look at the social media. Everyone today writes or draws something! Do you think anyone needs another self-proclaimed author out there? What for? You are useless, your books are useless, you are going to be a freeloader". And when it comes to creating a dream life-style for myself, of course, according to this voice, "I don't deserve something like that. These people have it, because they deserve it". All in all, watching your channel is so much help in this endless battle! Thank you!
How lovely that you're also a fan of the book! I especially like the sketches and character development of Dug the dog 😄 You absolutely deserve to follow your dreams and achieve them, keep on battling that voice and build a bigger, stronger voice that believes you can do it and deserve it!
What a fun video, Mimi! I especially appreciated how you addressed perfectionism and practice (thanks for asking that question, @SweenaMangal!). I hear a lot of artists talking about their struggles with making art that isn’t intended for, or isn’t “good enough,” to be posted on social media. This kind of pressure can be so insidious and I think it’s a serious impediment to growing as an artist. From experience, I know that my daily practice is often awkward and embarrassingly bad but it’s vital to helping me continue to improve my skills as well as evolve my voice. I had not heard of either of the books you mentioned so new items to add to my Christmas list!! Thanks, Mimi, once again for so generously sharing your knowledge and experience with us. You’ve helped me grow and learn so much this year!! Lots of love and Happy Holidays from Oregon! -Tara Kate
Aw you always write the loveliest comments, Tara Kate! You're so right, making awkward art is so important for improving, perhaps I'll make a whole video on this topic in the new year because I hate to think of people holding themselves back because of perfectionism. Wishing you a happy holidays as well ❤
Loved hearing your answers to these questions (and thanks for doing mine too)! 💛 You are inspirational and I look forward to seeing your progress and would definitely be interested in learning more about these future courses for building your own business. 😉👏
art school can help with making contacts, but its not needed to go into art being your business. knowing those contacts before you start is helpful but you can still grow your contacts list yourself with some work
Thank you! I'm using a mix of my own brushes (mostly for the base shapes) that I'm working on, and a lot of the texture was using a brush called 'natural feel' from Kyle's Megapack 😊
Hi, I can see that there are some clipping masks on your layers. Can you please explain why we need them. A step by step tutorial will be very much appreciated! And yes, I agree with the others that you make creating illustrations seem simple and organic. Love your drawings!
The amount of me speeding to click this video is embarrassing 😮💨. Btw just wanna let you know, you inspired me a lot! I just started an art channel and sometimes it’s hard to be consistent but your videos always remind me to keep creating and be happy:)
Congrats on starting your channel! Consistency is everything! And Mimi has so much good advice and just looking closely at how she does things: her thumbnails and motion graphics and just how polished her content is-always super inspiring!! Best wishes for your future success! 💝

The clipping masks mean that anything I draw on that layer will be 'clipped' to the shape below it, so it's really handy!
What font do you use for your videos?
