I've just worked through temperatures of -50 C in Northern Albetya Canada. I could never, never fight a battle under such conditions. These men were tough, tough individuals!!
Fighting in wool and leather boots! Yet, German frostbite casualties in 1941 were far greater than battle casualties. They learned how to use explosives to blast bunkers, sleep together for warmth and to stay outside only a short time. The Eastern front was very porous and the line was held by bases with ski patrols in between in winter.
Eeeeww!..... brutal, the coldest I ever worked in was about -10 F, W.C. made it around -25 F, a few times, I would think about combat in those situations and it made me feel better that I wasn't fighting for my life on an empty stomach with very little to no sleep in clothes that didn't do the job. It's just as much a mental fight in combat as it is a physical one. When you're working It's just 8hrs. and you have options, and you know warmth and beer are waiting for you but in combat...... You Ain't Goin' NOWHERE, and you usually have NO IDEA when you'll be in some kind of Safety and Comfort AGAIN. The guys on the Eastern front have ALL my respect.
Yeah, well said Jason, there were a lot of vehicles that completely froze even with block heaters. The panzer units certainly had starter issues, as did the supply vehicles. It's stunning that the soldiers had summer clothes only in 41 42. Crazy!

The 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking or SS Division Wiking was an infantry division and later an armoured division among the thirty-eight Waffen-SS division. During World War two. They surrendered on 9 May 1945 to the American forces in Austria. commanders: Felix Steiner; Herbert Gille; Eduard Deisenhofer; Johannes Mühlenkamp; Karl Ullrich.
The division contained small contingents of foreign volunteers from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Iceland, the Netherlands and Belgium. These contingents were elevated in wartime propaganda and postwar mythology, including from the former German officers of the division, to give the Wiking Division the reputation of a pan-European force. In truth, the division was at all times equipped with a vast majority of German personnel.
Their efforts though not successful did manage to save a large part of Europe from the Bolshevik hordes. Without that all of Europe would have been plunged into eternal darkness.
"Today we will take a look at the memoirs of a soldier of the 5th SS Panzer Division "Das Reich" about the battles near Moscow...". Seriously? These are huge factual errors, all in one sentence too. First of all, the 5th SS was Wiking, while the 2nd SS was Das Reich. Secondly, there were no Waffen-SS panzer divisions at the time, nor were they numbered, these were motorized infantry divisions. Finally, at the end of 1941, Wiking fought in southern Russia, west of Rostov, while Das Reich fought in the region west of Moscow.
Sorry, but your info isnt correct..5° SS was named "Viking" because a lot of soldiers was nordics. initially was a PzGrenadier divisionen ( mot.) named
The metal bucket was filled with wood, burned into a bucket of hot coals, thrn pushed under the tank to warm up the engine to start. Most engines were Deutz air-cooled, diesels. Ya learned something today. My uncle was a tank destroyer gunner, taught me that trick 60 years ago to start tractors in Colorado.
@speckledjim_ If your talking about the structure attached to the back of the turret then it has nothing to do with heating the engine, they are called turret bins and are used for storing the crews belongings and rations as there was no space inside the tank.
FYI, Wiking was an SS Panzer Grenadier Division in mid/late 1942. Check their status and unit designation in 1941. I don't believe it was a Panzer anything at that time. I don't believe that 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich" was even formed yet as an SS Panzer Division in 1941 at all. I believe it was SS Motorized Infantry Division "Reich". Check the OBs and official titles of these units.
The 5th SS was formed in 1940, with the name "Germania" and made up largely of Nordic volunteers, changing its name to "Viking" in 41. Initially it was a Pzgrenadier (mot.) division, not a Pz one
Most of the early German SS units began life as regiments. You know the difference right? Their histories are easily available through a quick Google search. There were no SS Pz Divs until 1943. The major ones followed the same paths from PzGr Divs and then to SS Pz Divs. Except for 9th,10th and 12th SS Pz Divs. 5th SS Wiking only became a FULL Waffen SS Panzer Div in October of 1943. Usually the just added another Pz Regiment to their OB. When I was 16 I had the pleasure of speaking with a German man from East Prussia who had been a Hauptsturmführer (Company Commander) in one the Pz regiments of SS Wiking. He joined the Division in 1944 and never fought in Russia, just in Eastern Europe. He began in Panthers, then Tiger I's, and finally Tiger II's. He was transferred to one of the SS Schwere Pz Battalionen (one of the 500#s) and fought in the Ardennes Offensive (obviously NOT as a part of Wiking). I think his unit was attached to 1st SS. He ended the war in Czechoslovakia. It was a very interesting chat to say the least.
When I used to be having a sleepless nights due to lack of heroin in my younger days, feeling hot, cold, sweats, I would perversely imagine being on the Russian front to imagine how worse it would be, well, addiction isn't sanity is it.
IMO only, i have always been with the mindset that the SS and SS panzer divisions were like modern day Roman legions. Their disapline, mental and tactical training, team oriented battle strategy were second to none.
yes, but there are a mith about their equipment..Them had not better equipment that a Herres Pz division, and, in some case, like compaired with the Grossdeutchland or Pz-Lehr divisionene, both elite herres divisions, was worst
Yeah, it was too bad that they were way outnumbered, by the Soviets, and way outproduced, by the Americans, isn't it? And, worse than that, was being led by an illogical, drug-addicted, self-centered, greedy tyrannical dictator, named Adolf Hitler, who lost all of his reason, and his humanity, while directing these great soldiers, in this futile effort, was real bad too, huh? This is why socialism never works, whether in communist Soviet Union, or fascist Nazi Germany: a strong, centrally-controlled, top-down government, with no individual liberties or freedoms, total media control, and all power to the state, will always fail, sooner or later. The German Army did well in Russia, early on, because of the mistakes and total control of that other tyrannical dictator, Josef Stalin, of the Soviet Union. And so this fight developed into a contest of who could make the most mistakes, the winner losing the war. So glad I live in America, where we didn't have to experience this kind of hell, that Europe experienced, during WWII, and Eastern Europe is experiencing again, under a new tyrannical dictator, Vladimir Putin. This all springs from a lack of criticism, from a lack of free speech and free press; from a govt that tells the people what to do, instead of the other way around. Too bad these dedicated soldiers had to suffer under such a failed form of government!
What a ridiculous comment. If they were so great. Why did 5-7 million Nazi terrorists die in Russia. The Russian were tougher and determined to rid their country of the invading murderers.
I'll take the US Marine Corps over them during the second World War. I think they had it much worse against the Japanese. They never surrendered. There would be 20000 of them to be lucky to get 70 to surrender, and most of them were wounded.

Hardly weak or easily defeated. How do you explain their massive victories and rapid advance of 1200km to Moscow? By the time they reached Moscow area their combat strength was 20% for Das Reich (my dad was one of their ranks, said companies of 180 were down to 30 men) Yet they broke through at Moshaisk in hand to hand fighting against well equipped Siberian Rifles with T34 tanks and Katyusha support. As for the Grrman allies, except the Finns who were first class but confined to Karelia, the rest were liabilities rather than assets. The Baltic, Dutch volunteers were hood too but only entered from1943. Get uou facts right!
