- There are great scenes in movies and television that highlight cool audio gear. This is one of a series of videos that will highlight the cool gear shown on the big screen and small.

Unique video, and that is appreciated. The most prominently displayed piece of stereo gear in TV history was the compact all in one stereo seen in most episodes of the Bob Newhart Show. A Juliette....A Clarinette? The Hartley's never did upgrade. There was a college kids fad where they would watch reruns of the show and every time someone on the show said BOB, they would all have to take a shot of whiskey. His name was said so often that it guaranteed a drunken time for all. I once suggested to another stereo guy on his RUclips channel, that the same drinking game could be played every time he mentioned his ultra expensive Bel Canto equipment. I think he mentioned it thousands of times. He no longer gave me red hearts for my comments after that. On at least one season of the Danny Thomas Show a more serious looking stereo right in tve middle of the living room, was shown several times each episode. Looked like McIntosh...but not sure. Reel Tape machines were shown galore, especially in Secret Agent type shows of the 1960s. Not just on Mission Impossible. If you're a Secret Agent...Don't tell anyone! What fictional Detective with a whole very long series of best selling novels, usually mentioned in the story something about his stereo equipment? The equipment in the stories changed as the author in real life, changed & upgraded equipment., And often started the novels with something like "I was sitting in my boat listening to my new AR 3 speakers, with my Scott tuner and Marantz amp, when I heard a loud cry in the distance." In his later novels the fictional Detective was mentioning his new AR 9 speakers. Recently on RUclips there was a video about NBC's late night host Jimmy Fallon's 100k stereo system. Guys with 500 grand systems were writing in the comments " That's all he can afford." I guess everyone knows there's no business like show business, for money $$$.
Also in the old Seinfeld episodes, there appears to be a subwoofer or box speaker always in the corner of the room. It's Plain Jane looking, and it would be a tough question as to what speaker it is. An even tougher question would be how many different cereals Jerry always had on hand, in his overhead kitchen cabinet. Really a Man Of Variety there! Looks like he lived on cereal. It once showed the mailman Newman's stereo briefly, from an episode, shot back when a stamped envelope fron the Post Office didn't cost over a dollar!....Did they ever show Kramer's apartment? He'd definitely be a JBL 100 guy. Not sure if he had electricity though. He didn't seem to have a fridge, as he he was always using Jerry's fridge and Jerry's food. George had a modest stereo...and a modest lp collection. On one episode, when a date came into his apartment and saw his record player, she asked him "What kind of music do you have?" Trying to appear hip & musically saavy, George, unconfidently & self conciously replied.. "Ray Coniff...and The Singers?" Sounds like a very generic name for a singing group. He probably purchased them at a flea market; as that artists lps are always cheap there, and you can count on seeing them there.
Fabio,(remember him?) was featured in an old Stereophile magazine issue, telling about his custom made Krell electronics and Martin Logan electrostatic speakers; built exclusively for him. Clint Eastwood allegedly owned ultra high end Rockport loudspeakers. Funny guys Tony Randall and Gary Shandling were known to be avid audiophiles also. Walter Becker of Steely Dan and Rod Stewart were known to be dedicated audiophiles.
As far as the audiophile mystery Detective question mentioned above, there was a Chapter in ine of his novels where the detective put a bullet hole in his Marantz 18 receiver; which could give you a clue as to his novels vintage. The last name of the fictional Detective started with the same 2 letters as the author's actual last name in real life. His long series of best selling fiction novels about the detective whose hobby was audio, all had colorful titles.
Not sure of the character, but I bet there is some gear in the "Our Man Flint" spy flick.
I love the idea behind this video! Thank you, Mr. SCOTT
Thanks! A fun thing we "audio gear heads" like to do! :-)
Great video and definitely something I haven’t seen on other channels. Thanks Scott!
So much more to cover than just reviewing a list of gear, etc. so I am hoping to keep mixing things up. These do take a LOT of time though to pull it all together.
You missed risky business. Great topic!
That featured a Phase Linear 7000 Series II, made by Pioneer.
Ferris Buler is another one.
I didn't actually miss it, I just didn't want to put all of the obvious ones in the first video. LOL
Loved this concept for the video. I think the Macs in Bosch were a MC240 and a MX110 with Ohm F. It’s funny, it was seeing Bosch’s setup prompted me to get back involved with audio gear. Due to family and job it had been 25 years since I had paid attention. After seeing this I had to had some vintage McIntosh.
Unfortunately, the clip I had was VERY blurry. So a a MC240/MX110, Bosch had great taste!
I could tell how blurry it is.
Great video, Scott!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was fun and enjoyable. Your creativity is showing!
In the "Bosch" clip, I think the McIntosh "tuner" is one of their early tuner/preamps, perhaps the MX-110. And I think the amp is an MC-240. I think the JBL's next to the stacked receivers are JBL-L112's and the bottom receivers looks like one of Pacific Stereo's house units. This was fun!
Those are Ohm Walsh speakers. That Mac 225 at 25w per channel would be sore pressed to drive those Ohms 6Ohm impedence needing 50w minimum. Someone didn't think that set up thru, looks cool but....
Yes. At other times, the McIntosh tube amp on "Bosch" (an Amazon Prime series) is seen more clearly. His speakers are Ohm Walsh models. Also, this may be the episode in which Bosch tells his daughter of his love for West Coast alto sax player Art Pepper and plays Pepper's "Patricia" from his late-career LP, "Today" (1978).
Yes, that is the scene, unfortunately, the clip is quite blurry.
Haha, I love this Scott! I did something similar on my FB group a couple years ago. I believe it was a Geico commercial where the gecko was having a yard sale and everyone was trying to buy his vintage stereo that wasn't for sale! lol It also wasn't branded, so I challenged my group to guess what it was. I think it was also a Marantz, maybe 2230...
I think a fun thing most all of us do when we are watching TV/Movie or even out somewhere. Over the holidays, we were out with some family and visited a local attraction that had a room that displayed "technology across the decades". I took several pics of the 70's/80's section.
Maria starring Angelina Jolie has a fluoroscan era Pioneer integrated amp in a number of scenes. The problem is Maria Callas died in 1977.
I've not seen that movie, we will check it out!
Great video Scott! I used to watch "Suits" and for the first few seasons Harvey had a tube amp and a turntable that you never got close enough to identify, but the Klipsch speakers on the window ledge were unmistakable. In 'According To Jim' there was a Technics' SA-200 behind Jim's chair. It's not connected to anything though. I'm always looking at audio gear in movies and TV shows just like you. Drives my wife nuts. LOL
I've actually never seen "Suits" although I have been aware of it. I'll need to seek out those Klipsch!
I love this format because Im Always stereo spotting when I watch movies. I hope you make many more. Joey and Chandler in friends had some Martin Logan Electro static speakers. Monica had a Technics amp and cassette Don't forget pulp fiction.
Oh yes, I think it will make for a good recurring series.
In the first clip it😮 appears to be a NEC CD player. I had one and gave it to my father. It is a beautiful machine. I also noticed a Nakamichi Dragon TT on top of the cabinet.
NEC CD705 (1983)
@@royvossen4707 That's it. A beautiful player. Since my father passed I don't know where it went.
Awesome! So the little drawer was to store the remote afterall.
@@stereoniche Yes. Very nice heavy duty transport. I still have the remote.
Gene Hackman in The Conversation; plays saxaphone accompaning a piece playing on a Rek-O-Cut turntable, not to mention all of his professional gear.
Oh yes, that is one killer scene!
And let's not forget the futuristic, super-cool-looking Transcriptors Hydraulic Reference turntable in the movie A Clockwork Orange.
Someone didn’t watch the video! LOL
Fun stuff. For part 2 on this topic, here are a few ideas: In the movie, _The Departed_ there's a sweet stack of McIntosh gear in Matt Damon's apartment. S2EP01 of the old TV show _Dragnet_ (The Grenade) shows off a Decca DP-253 all-in-one stereo turntable and speakers. Jack Webb was an audiophile, and almost certainly this piece was from his collection of gear. In the movie _Silver Streak_ the character Hilly shows us her very cool-looking Sony CF-350 cassette player/recorder at 1:19:00 into the movie. In the show _Better Call Saul_ S2EP05, Jimmy's brother, Chuck, pampers his Sansui G3000 receiver in the opening scene. Lastly, in the movie _High Fidelity_ John Cusask show off his vintage Sansui AU-7900 while discussing how to make a great mix-tape for his girlfriend. Cheers!
I have some of those on my list, but adding other as well. Thanks for the heads up!
"As Good As It Gets" from 1997 is a great movie with Jack Nickleson's full McIntosh system.
I need to watch that one again, great movie.
Great.video , I thought I would see the B&O stereo from Christmas Vacation.
I really enjoyed watching, thanks for sharing.
Too many for one video, but I will get that B & O in there.
'Michael Clayton' Arthur Edens stereo system in the movie was a Pioneer Elite set IIRC. He used it to make a custom voice msg for his answering system in a memorable scene.
Brendan Gleeson's character in Mr Mercedes has a vintage setup and some vinyl.
Did not have this one, added!
Hi Scott, interesting video, from now on I'll be looking at the audio equipment in films, one film that I remember had a scene where the owner talked about his system is in Boogie Nights, and since I've been into retro and vintage gear, I've been wanting to see that movie again, just to see what audio system the guy has, I seem to remember he's proud of Stereo sound. Looking forward to your next video. 👍🏻
Yes, I had actually looked to include Boogie Nights in this video, but could only get a good pic of the cassette deck. There are other scenes, so I'll keep looking.
Excellent topic, I'm always picking that stuff out.
It is a fun thing to keep an eye out for while enjoying shows. Sometimes it drives my wife a little batty. LOL
@stereoniche mine too
Check out "Americnan Psycho", there was an high-end HK system that was featured in that movie .There are some really good shots of it and some other top shelf items in his apartment.
Oh yes, “Psycho” is on the list for a future video.
Is that the scene 'death by Huey Lewis'?, great scene and great movie - I'm a big fan of Huey Lewis and the News.
Orson Wells (Citizen Kane) used to shill for Paul Masson wine in a TV commercial while turning the volume dial on a McIntosh receiver. "Some things can't be rushed...good music and good wine..." By the way, the music he was listening to before turning down the volume was Beethoven's 5th Symphony.
I recall the commercials, but not the stereo. I'll have to see if I can find some clips of it.
Believe those are Ohm Walsh speakers from the great series, Bosch. The system shows up frequently during the series. Would be a nice system to replicate.
Yes, it is a pretty sweet system.
In "Departed" Matt Damon is rocking a full Macintosh stack
I had tried to find that clip, but could not locate it for this vid.
Nice video, you own some fantastic gear! I do the same thing with all the movies I watch, looking for hifi in the room! Always hoping to see one of the vintage Luxman pieces I own, no luck so far😅There are several movies featuring Jason Statham with nice equipment, I do not recall the name of the movies.
Luxman may be hard to find, but we need to keep a sharp eye out!
Christie Canyon had a pair of corner horns in her movie.
Style B, oak with black grills
I doubt I'll get to research that clip. LOL
I mentioned this recent trend on another channel. Within the past few years, I saw the following in modern films:
A Pioneer SX-1000TW in "A Man Called Otto"
A Rotel receiver in "Nobody"
Marantz receivers in "The Blacklist", "The New Edition Story" and "Ant-Man And The Wasp"
A McIntosh amplifier in "Nope"
Also, there was a 1980's Harman/Kardon system in the film "American Psycho".
Nice! Several new ones to add to the list.
In the movie Philadelphia with Tom Hanks you can see elektrostatic speakers from the dutch brand Audiostatic. The model you see is ES300.
Nice!
The McIntosh is probably their MX 110 tuner preamp. I had one long ago.
Indeed, had I put more thought into it, I would have realized the system needed a pre!
No mention of Risky Business and the Phase Linear model 7000 series II or the rest of the gear ??
It is on the list for a next video.
In the Bosch clip I believe that’s a McIntosh tuner-preamp, MX-110. Also the speakers could also could be from Snell.
I think you are correct on the MX-110. What Snell models do you think they could be?
Stereos in movies: most often you see speakers and nothing else, or components and no speakers. Nagra has a look aesthetic that I call "Laboratory equipment chic"
Indeed. Nagra belongs in "Weird Science" and a Thomas Dolby video. LOL
1988 "Hot to Trot" has the Infinity RS1b system
There is one I will need to try and dig up for sure.
@stereoniche movie on RUclips, see 38:03 in movie.
At 8:00 minutes the Mac tuner you mentioned is a Mac preamp turner like an MX110 or similar
Ahh, that makes much more sense!
John Cusack from “High Fidelity” had an old Rega TT, JBL Butt-Cheek horn speakers, some Tube gear I can’t remember.. In “Nobody” had a vintage Rotel system with a Rotel TT..
In the Pacific Stereo tt scene the receiver under the Marantz is possibly their Concept line
Good point!
The scene from Bosch shows a Mcintosh 240 not a 225; on the lest is a Mcintosh MX110 tuner-preamp
Yes it is. The clip I used was just too blurry.
Risky Business, American Psycho, Hi Fidelity all have fairly prominent use of audio equipment.
Movie - The Choice, 2026. Features a 1980's Denon turntable, DP-45F i think?
Nice!
there is a stereo system featured prominently in the living room of the Griffins on Family Guy. Not sure of the manufacturer but fairly certain it is late 80's stuff.
Family Guy is a cartoon and I'm pretty sure the stereo equipment was a cartoon also, like everyone else on the show. The dirty old man on that show had a voice that set a new world record for sibilance.
Maybe we can make up a good manufacturer/model for it!
LOVE this vid topic, Scott . …and don’t forget the movie gear that got many into this hobby after they watched it…Ferris Bueller’s Day Off…the sleeping scene’s where he’s using his system to fool his parents. Carver Gear! And I drooled over that Audio Source Equalizer. Keep ‘em’ comin’ my friend. 👍
Equalizer close up @ 1 minute mark

.
Oh yes, Ferris is on my short list. I just didn't want to hit all the "big ones" right out of the gate. :-)
Frequent flashes of what appears to be a Sota Star or Sapphire model on television series 'House'. I'm struggling to remember a brief scene from a movie (or television series) in which some teen is going gaga over a friend's father's TT - which appears to be a Sota Sapphire...
We used to watch House quite often. I'll have to see if I can find that episode.
Bose 901's were in the Reverse Peephole episode of Seinfeld and also in Arthur Arthur.
Added to the list!
The JBL- looking speakers in the Greatest Hits clip looks more like RSL 3600 (Rogers Sound Labs) speakers. I have a pair and they sure look like it.
Thanks for pointing them out!
Equalizer in 9 1/2: AudioSource EQ Series One II.
Nice!
It doesn't take too many A77's to make a ton.
In the movie "precious " I saw a pioneer sx 828 in the scene where the mother is attacking the daughter
Boy, this subject doesn't get any more niche than this, but I watch Will Trent and he has a system that is in the background of some scenes in his living room but always in a dark corner. He played vinyl on it in an episode and it may actually be a console unit given the character's vintage set decor. I'm always looking for it, but no clear view yet.
Niche it certainly is! Keep up the investigation on Will Trent. LOL
The Slick Rick video would probably have been circa 1986, not 2006.
He was ahead of his time. ;-)
Whitney Houston biopic “I wanna dance with somebody” has some great scenes with vintage hifi in it check it out if you get a chance. Pretty woman has a scene with a Sony receiver. Pulp fiction reel to reel. Ferris buellers day off bedroom scene.
Thanks for the additional suggestions!
I SAW my Receiver SANSUI 9090db on soap opera all my Children
I saw my whole setup on John Belushi so apt. i n a closet but looked just like how I had mine Technics SB7000 speakers hanging from wall up to ceiling on hooks & 9090db & 9500 pioneer EQ. Like mine beads hanging in front of Closet I did to so strange it's almost like Belushi came to house and stole my setup but also had Reverb pioneer 2020 think it was ; it was AuldioPhile mag 9090 was in movie can't recall name.
“They” are always watching. :-)
Thanks for the video. A pro level Nagra is pivotal in the French movie Diva from 1981. Its hunted at in this clip:
ruclips.net/video/At9RjKHC79U/видео.htmlsi=c83dQAQq6pnlutGb
Excellent! Another Nagra!
I often freeze-frame and zoom in on vintage audio gear I don't immediately recognize in movies and TV I watch at home. I sometimes wonder why it's there. Does the choice of equipment say something about the fictional character who owns it? Or is it just corporate product-placement? Sometimes I think it just indicates that somebody working on the production thought the high-end stuff looked cool (and it does!), even if it wasn't realistically something within the reach (aesthetically or financially) of the characters. Maybe they got to keep certain "props" after the shoot.
I recently re-watched Jerzy Skolimowski's eerie 1978 British drama/horror film "The Shout" in which one character (played by John Hurt) is an electronic musician and sound artist with a studio full of equipment -- including one of my favorite pieces in my own collection, an impressively industrial-looking Kenwood KA-8004 integrated amp (1973-76) with its distinctive split face (silver/ bronze) and recessed yellow lamps housed in the crevice between the two. Look for it!
Denoted! :-)
I'm pretty sure 9 1/2 weeks has. Klipsch LaScalas in it.
