Very nice and well explained hypothesis. The sequence repetition in fact allows this kind of behaviour and expansion, opposed to the more puzzle-like fugas of late baroque composers as Bach. Congratulations for the approach.

What gorgeous recordings! I was at first simply amazed at how simple, but effective technique was at the beginning, but holy sh!t the more and more examples you provided, I was starting to be completely blown away by how intricate but perfect(?) it sounds. I usually thought I preferred faster renditions of those Monteverdi clips, but holy crap. So far, it's this technique that has most reminded me of "the music of the spheres".

The 1610 Vespers are one of my favourite pieces ever written; it was wonderful to learn more about compositional techniques used there! The stretto fugue method as used here seems familiar- is it also used by Monteverdi in the prologue of Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria, when Human Frailty sings 'quel mi combatte', with similar counterpoint between voice and bassline?
