    The final battle with Makoto is the perfect climax for the self reliance vs depending on others theme of the game. Yuma has learned from his friends and grown throughout his journey and is at his most confident, competent, and armed with the truth. However, Makoto with the combined power of the Labyrinth and his borrowed Solution Blade is too much for him to take on alone. When Yuma starts to falter against him, Shinigami helps him enough to turn the tide back in Yuma's favor, but then allows him to continue on his own until he needs her help again. I feel that it shows that a healthy balance of both is needed and you can learn from others who help you to improve yourself.
    I really like how the Master Detectives all paid respects to Yakou on their way out. I like Halara giving up their coin they used as a weapon the most.

    I'm really glad that Makoto was a redeemable villain. It really makes it distinct from the Danganronpa games. I was worried that this game would pull a "Kanai is the last surviving place on earth!" kinda thing, so I'm really glad they kept this game (relatively) grounded when it came to its biggest mystery.

  • @mythriljojo

    Rain Code was such a breath of fresh air. It was really nice to have a game by the Danganronpa developers where they had more material to work with than an empty school with 16 students. They had an entire city of people to work with. Serial Murder Cases, Copycat killers, a giant massacre on a train, a murder involving Accomplices, a murder on the same level as Danganronpa 2 Case 5 etc. The final mystery was so cool. And the pink blood was a very fun nod to Danganronpa by making the color a plot point. The team accomplished a lot of things that would have been impossible to do with the limited setting of Danganronpa. Definitely a standout game this year. 9/10 for me personally. My biggest problem related mostly to the repetitiveness of the Mystery Labyrinths and the god awful loading times.

      The load times come from the switch.. the Mystery Labyrinths come from the teams.. inexperience with 3D games, and probably a limited budget.. although they are basically just glorified walking simulators.

    • @mythriljojo
      @mythriljojo Год назад +2

      @@cyberpxl True. But that still doesn't excuse it. Xenoblade 3 is another Switch game and the load times aren't as bad because it's mostly when you travel to another area map. You can load data in different ways. Just a question of how you do it. My problem with the Mystery Labyrinths are really only the infinite corridors that only form the end when the characters are done talking. Might as well be cutscenes instead of Walkie Talkie sections that require directional input to advance.

    • @cyberpxl
      @cyberpxl Год назад +4

      @@mythriljojo agreed, however I’d say it’s likely that’s just because of the developers inexperience with full 3D games. As someone who’s made some small games before, even at a tiny scale, optimising a 3D game is SIGNIFICANTLY more difficult than a 2D one. As for the Mystery Labyrinths I completely agree. I have to be completely honest, I haven’t played the game, I’ve only watched it on Johne’s channel, so I’ve had the luxury of being able to fast forward or even skip those bits. However I agree that it would probably be more beneficial to just have cutscenes or even just regular stationary dialogue instead of those endless walking sections. Another issue I have that’s mostly just an annoyance (and is present in most Japanese games) is the amount of different text boxes and fonts used. Regular dialogue is one, then there’s the walking simulator dialogue, then normal cutscenes, THEN CG cutscenes. It just feels inconsistent. I am aware that this is in many other games as well, but it is always just a liiiiitttleeeee bit annoying.

    I *just* realized that Number One had already checkmated Makoto by resigning *prior* to investigating Kanai Ward. Makoto didn't even realize he had already lost his ability to impersonate Number One to the WDO to procure ingredients, and was too distracted with Yomi to even notice. If Makoto had successfully killed Yuma in the Mystery Labyrinth, Number One's contingency trap would've sprung and the homunculi would all starve to death, eventually.

    What i love about this is the core conflict here is Number 1 can't ask for help, it's just too out of character for him. and his enemy this time is basically his mirror. The only way to beat this mystery was to depend on others, so he had to mindwipe himself to even TRY to connect to others. Best part is keeps this development even if he's somewhat forgotten shinigami.
    The even better part is you can see what wouldve happened to Yuma/#1 by looking at Makoto, you see where the mindset and pride leads you. Tired, Stressed, Alone and in complete despair. If makato worked with others, he coulda solved this ages ago just like he did in the Epilogue. its a Great Mirror Dynamic with these 2 and its one of my favorite things in fictional plots.

    I personally see Shinigami as the Junko enoshima of this game. Not just by design but also by parallels of their characters. They both Hide behind a mascot like figure( Shigami’s ghost form and Monokuma), They both a crazy and they both are obsessed with something( Shinigami being obsessed with mysteries and Junko being obsessed with despair).
    But there’s still a difference. While Junko is Pure evil and doesn’t care for anyone, Shinigami does care for Yuma and while she acts like a Jerk sometimes I think that’s just her way of trying to toughening him up into becoming the Great detective he was before losing his memories.

    • @jawz9455

      It's almost like she's the Danganronpa community's favorite character so they put her likeness in their new IP.

    • @magicalcapi9148
      @magicalcapi9148 Год назад +1

      I believe the difference is how they do what they do. Junko was as a means to spread despair. Shinigami from what I understood, she doesn't care, she's a deletion god.
      However, since Shinigami requires the mystery labyrinth to be solved for her be able to do it, it puts her at least in neutral good position. Where Junko would be in neutral evil.
      Her care for Yuma is also justified because of how isolating her whole mechanic works. And in the opposite way, how despair works in Danganronpa. So, I see why the comparison, and I agree that they're much alike, but the small details make them very different characters in my opinion.

    • @moorhsum9755
      @moorhsum9755 Год назад +3

      Junko definitely isn't the community's favorite character and hasn't been for a long, long time (if ever).
      In 2021, a character popularity poll based on japanese fans votes, the top trio consisted of Nagito, Chiaki and Kokichi - and even without polls, they have been favored by the community practically ever since DR2 and DRV3 got released.
      If we just take the DR1 classment, she's the third most popular character, after Kyouko and Makoto.
      I don't think it was necessarily a conscious choice by Spike Chunsoft or Kodaka to make Shinigami look like Junko just for the sake of attracting DR Fans. Plus, she's not the only character in Rain Code who's reminiscent of important DR characters. If Yuma is Makoto and Kyouko's son (aka Saihara's little brother) then Makoto Kagutsuchi is Kokichi's adopted spawn. He lies, he smart, he trick, he silly and he makes me sad, plus he purple and a ceo/dictator.
      It's not only the characters though, you can see this game has been the works since V3's release since they share similar themes : truth vs lies. Despair and Hope also makes a return, but more quietly.
      I don't think these parallels just exist to attract Danganronpa Fans, I just think it's a part of Kodaka's artistic style and the subjects that have been on his mind since working on DR. He definitely takes advantage of our dr knowlegde, what with the pink blood reveal in Rain Code, but I think it's also just a side of his development as a writer and creator that stuck with him. I like the way his characters have evolved to become more consistent and full. There were many writing issues Junko which ended up making her boring and tiring to deal with the more she appeared (the V3 "It's always Junko" was way too on point), but Shinigami ended up doing the opposite : tired to deal with until she grows on you and becomes a character you will miss dearly. I think, in a way, Kodaka is dealing with the writing mistakes of his past, growing from them and showing off what he can do now after fixing them. It's really sastifying to see, but I do hope he'll find other themes and dynamics to explore as he continues in career - Characters like Yakkou and Vivia were really interesting and I can't say they remind me of any specific DR character . Rain Code gave us the best possible answer to the Truth vs Lies dilema, I think we can put it to sleep now. Though I one thing I will never grow tired of his trickster characters, now matter how predictable they are and sincerely hope they stay a staple of his work forever.

    Here's my perspective on the ages of the characters:
    Yuma/Number One/Makoto: A lot of other characters do refer to Yuma as a kid, and in japan people when they reach their twenties they're adults. And since both Kurumi and Fubuki confess they like Yuma, Yuma has to least be close to age with them. And the talk between Makoto and Yuma about the license. In Japan, you have to be 18 to get a license. And since neither have a license, either they're both 17 or they're 18 but haven't got their license yet.
    Kurumi: most likely 17 or 18.
    Fubuki: 18 or 19.
    Desuhiko: 20, since he talks about going to the bar with a women and talks about getting a car in his dlc. Also he's never referred to as a kid, but a young man/shorty.
    Vivia and Halara: around their twenties
    Yakuo: late 30s or early 40s. Since in 10 years ago he was a teenager/young adult.
    At least that's what I gathered from the game's dialogue.

    What's your read on Shinigami's line? During the final moments of Chapter 5, shortly before breaking their pact, Shinigami says that she's alright with being alone again after Yuma forgets about her, because her centuries trapped in the Book of Death have gotten her used to loneliness. Her voice acting seems to imply that she's putting on a brave face, but if so, is she reassuring Yuma so that he won't lose his nerve and try to stay with her in the Mystery Labyrinth, therefore dying himself? Or is she trying to reassure _herself_ in order to convince herself to let him go?

    • @dindapriska
      @dindapriska Год назад +29

      Probably a mix of both. She's a godlike being, trapped inside a book. She knows the consequence from ending the pact and the use of the emergency door will come sooner or later, so when the time to face it comes (even if it's much sooner than she expected), she knows she needs to put up a brave face to the contractor.
      Be as it may however, she also knows emotions and experienced things together with Yuma. Despite her countless amount of teasing and mocking, they did enjoy their times together. Knowing that he'll forget everything they experienced together and she has to let him go is sad for her. Even with a brave face, she can't hide this fact.

      Well, this isn’t related to _those_ lines specifically, but I’ve been waiting to get this off my chest, so here’s my interpretation of Shinigami based on the lines she says just before that point:
      Deep down, through all that pride and selfishness on the surface, she thoroughly believes that mortals cannot love her. She’s a death god, so why should they? None of people she encounters will ever have any reason to care for her, except for _maybe_ the ones that make pacts with her, and even then, they’re _her_ masters at that point, not the other way around. But even then she continues to show her support for them, because the ways she sees things, one-sided love is better than no love at all.
      This is why she insults people so frequently. We don’t know anything about Shinigami’s past, but clearly something must have happened to plant that idea in her head and make it stay put so stubbornly that she started pushing people away with her words so that _they_ can’t hurt _her_ first. She only really lets Yuma in, and even then she still insults him quite often.
      This is also why she’s so awkward when shown kindness, and why she describes herself as kind when trying to convince Yuma not to sacrifice himself: because from her perspective, she’s actually incredibly selfless towards the ones who probably couldn’t care less about her.

    This game was soooo good. Every character had some level of complexity, all were unique. It's a refreshing break away from Daganronpa. It had an impactful message about today's society. I wonder how the UG managed to obtain Yuma's DNA to make Makoto.
    Yuma's solution is so simple that it came across as unexpected.
    Shinigami wound up becoming endearing in the end.
    Never expected the chapter's title to refer to Shinigami.
    It's good to see Ramen Shop guy prospering in the reformed Kanai Ward.
    LOL wasn't expecting suitcase Vivia.
    Fubuki was in a haze long before the smoke.

    I will say these last 2 cases really redeemed Shinigami, it shows despite her flaws she is still a being that cares and can create bonds herself even though its limited. It probably is a good way to see why she became the way she was, losing anyone she can ever care about. Despite her actions even she was able to show some dignity which is a refreshing touch from when we first met her.

    Almost everything was wrapped up quite nicely in my opinion! Although some might disagree, I personally don't mind the epilogue taking on a cheerier tone in giving us this story's sendoff. Kodaka games, whilst tinted with a lot of sadness, bitterness, and a roller coaster of emotions, the endings at least don't leave you on a totally sour note. The *One* thing that's missing that I wish was elaborated is the current and future fates of all the Homunculi who have already _"died..."_ Not just in general, but to at least give us... some closure for some of the characters we've lost along the way. Yakou, Yoshiko, Waruna, Kurane, and Shachi all in particular. It just... feels _bitter_ leaving their zombified fates ambiguous in the end...
    But regardless of all of that, this was still an AMAZING journey! And I'm glad I was here to watch the entire ride, Johne!

    Before Makoto came to Kanai Ward, he was on the run from the UG and had to live a lonely existence. He probably came to Kanai Ward in the first place to look for others like him. However, he would instead see the massacre of Kanai Ward, and subsequently discover that the defective homunculi wouldn't even remember that massacre once they've become docile. At the time, the UG is planning to occupy the city and kill all of these homunculi without mercy. Since homunculi can be revived, the UG will likely perform torturous experiments to find a way to kill them permanently, even though these homunculi can still feel pain and emotions. If they succeed, Makoto's life and the life of everyone in Kanai Ward would be at stake.
    This is when Makoto chose to push aside his principles and start building a precarious tower of lies and mysteries. He couldn't cure his loneliness, since he had to push away everyone to sustain his web of lies.
    Now, after revealing the truth and everything went for the better, Makoto is no longer doing this alone. The people of Kanai loved him back.

    It will be a split story where we switch between 2 protagonists: Yuma investigating new mysteries and Kurumi working with shinigami to find Yuma. The detectives of this Game or 1-2 of them will reappear in the game alongside new master detectives and help both protagonists. I imagin Yomi might reappear again as the secondary villain working together with the second game’s main villain to get revenge on both Yuma and Makoto. That’s my speculation. What do you all think.
