  • A quick update of the perch fishing situation on the local rivers. Perch fishing with lures is currently quite tricky. I also talk about the Cheb or Cheburashka Rig and how I fish this with creature baits. In future videos I will also cover the Ned Rig, Jigheads and the Drop Shot.
    The Cheb Rig has landed me a fair number of big perch. I hope this video will help you land more clonking perch too!

    After a few months of research, watching plenty of videos on youtube and buying bits of kit adhoc I finally jumped in and purchased my first ever rod and reel. First day on the bank Sunday and I bagged two small perch one on a cheb rig and the other on a jig rig. Learnt a Tonne from your channel would have really struggled without it, keep it up 👍🏻

    Well what an evening session.
    Thought I'd try the cheb rig.
    Pouring with rain river going wild.
    Set up with a bubble gut creature bait...few casts had a perch..changed swims,broke rod tip(didn't cry...but did swear!)
    Quick riverside fix and carried on.
    Few casts in the mill pond..lots of current ,bang ! Got a take...a chub! 1st one I've ever caught.
    Hooked another but lost it.
    Got soaked...walking back to car,had last cast and was into a nice jack,about 5lb. Landed him.
    Got back to car,had left window open...wet seat . Home,changed,Chinese takeaway and bottle of red.
    Happy days!
    Try the cheb ..it worked for me.
    Thanks for taking the time to make these great videos Nick 👍👍

    That is a really good tip threading a loop through the cheburashka, I'm definitely going to do that. I was wondering why I wasn't really getting very many takes when the cheburashka was on a line clip, and I'm convinced it was effecting the action of the lure

    Great video I really enjoyed it👍 This is a method that I am yet to try for a couple of reasons although I'm really keen to get stuck in as I'm doing an awful lot of drop shotting at the moment lol. One is that I want to know just how light I can go with regards to weight and hook size for waters with pike such as in canals and smaller lodges and lakes " I don't want to get bitten off". The other is that if there are pike present and I still want to fish smaller hooks and weights is what trace to use.
    I'm really conscious about having to use a trace and types of trace on jigs, cheb rigs, and hard baits.
    Tight Lines 👍

    Very good channel. There are quite a few perch and BFS channels popping up, but mostly by excellent anglers with dodgy video production skills. You seem to be good in both! I also find very few angling channels offer guidance on how to play a fish to the landing net, especially on light tackle. Could you include some of that in future videos?

    It's a really good idea to use a quick change snap link instead of a loop in the main line, since the fish could push the lead off the bent wire and cut your line.

    • @Lifeonthebank

    People use snaps with cheburashka's because sometimes when you hook fish the weight comes lose and can damage thin leaders. Especialy for ultralight/light perch fishing. Happened to me once also.

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  4 года назад +1

      I never thought of that tbh. Never happened to me, but I definitely wouldn’t want the weight to fly up the line and leave me playing a fish on an open clip! Definitely something to think about! 🤔

    Here in Sweden I've been using the cheb rig attached to a small "fastach" clip for a couple years (for quick lure swapping). The loop trick looks great, although my experince is that the weight will tend to want to slide off the pin if the fit isn't tight enough, because often when I inspect the lure after a cast the weight has slid up pushing against the clip. This makes me hesitant to try without the clip or some kind of stopper..

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  3 года назад +3

      This has now happened to me since making the video. Only a couple of times but enough to stop me using the loop! I have found that my 10lb leader creates a big enough knot to stop this happening. I sometimes step up to 10lb if there’s an outside chance of a Jack. If I use 6lb leader I now use a clip. 👍👍👍

    Never heard of this Cheb rig until l watched this video but have used these small imitation crayfish and worms etc when targeting Perch and Chub, when l started lure fishing you had plugs spoons and spinners (many many years ago) l have seen a huge change in lure fishing and a massive upsurge in popularity, when l started club anglers that where on the banks in winter used to look at you a bit strangely because you were spinning for Pike and not sitting about watching a livebait under a bung!

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  4 года назад

      clooper man yeah, we’ve been influenced massively by the Bass anglers in the USA. It’s become much more advanced and technical. I too remember when it was either plugs or spoons and that was it! 😂👍🎣

      I would choose a hook based on the size of the lure you’re using. I use a lot of 1/0 or 2/0 EWG hooks on lures that are 3’ - 5’

    Trying it out for the first time this year. Going to fish on a small river with perch, trout, pike, barbel and roach. I bought 3,5 and 7 grams. I hope it is enough for a relatively easy flowing river?

    What hooks do you use and where do you buy them and the lures from? Can't find that white one anywhere :0/

    Do you fish the creature baits threw the water or always bounced across the bottom? Thanks for the videos too.

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  2 года назад +1

      Usually bounced on the bottom for me mate but you can very the speed. Some creature baits have quite thin appendages. These can be fished up in the water. The CrazyFish Nimble is an example of this. 👍

    Love your videos, but is there any need to have the backing misic so loud?

      Yeah, 100%. Something I changed quite a long time ago now. Maybe check out the more recent ones 👍👍👍

      I'm not trying to be critical as I say your videos are some of the best on utube for technical content but I have to watch with the remote close by as it can be annoying when the backing music comes on halfway through a vid twice as loud as your voice. But keep up the good work, great vids and keep em coming 👍

    What size hook should I use for perch

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  4 года назад

      Depends on the size on the lure. In this video it's 1/0 and 2/0. Thanks for the comment.

    Do you never get bitten off by pike with not using a trace?

    • @Lifeonthebank
      @Lifeonthebank  4 года назад

      Andy not often. I step up to 10lb flouro and that’s normally enough. If I ever get bitten off I will step up to a trace.

    Could only watch half the video before I muted it, you need to sort out your audio levels. Every time you stop talking the music levels get increased a silly amount. Before I muted it the content was great.

      Really appreciate the feedback. Was one of earlier videos where I used something called ‘auto ducking’ on the sound track. I do it manually now. Maybe check out one of my more recent vids and let me know if you feel the same. Appreciate all feedback- good and bad so thanks 🙏 👍🎣

    Devils advocate here: do you really think that the high priced brand soft plastics work any better than some silicone sealant strands fished in the same way? It would move and feel the same, and although we humans can can see the difference in the detail, colour and shape, fish are not exactly the smartest species on the evolutionary ladder: they have to take a nibble to investigate whatever it is to assess its food value. If it's good they eat it, if it's not they spit it out - but there's a hook in it - too late: gotcha. It would be interesting to see this theory put to the test in a video sometime. Think about it. Regards. Raymondo.

      I actually think that perch are smarter than you think. They wise up to lures quite quickly. I think the bigger brands recognise this and work hard to evolve what they’re doing to innovate new materials, colour combinations, swimming action etc etc. Yes you can buy cheaper but they’re not always the brands that are pushing things forward, often producing cheap copies. Will a perch hit both lures? Yes probably, but I choose to support innovation. The subject would make a good video though! 😉👍
