The music on here is typical of traditional West African music that you hear in Niger Republic and Mali, etc played by Fulani, Songhai, Hausa, etc. I am glad to hear this kind of music from Yorubas.

@Okuboro I was born and brought up in Lagos Island, Church street, Isale-eko. The influence that Eyo, Igunnu, gelede and other trad stuffs had on these guys music is ever blazing. Each time i'm in naija, i still find time to go to "Gbobaniyi" u know that joint beside "Iga Onisiwo" opp "Oba's palace"? I'd go there and hang out with older islanders just to get to listen to Lefty and the others there and drink. Its ever fun!!!! I miss my Isale-eko life.!!!!

EgbaAlake, thanks very much and many times for all your uploads. I grew up in Lagos, first Idi Oro Mushin, we had a record store at Igbobi bus stop, and I was the shopkeeper after school. It was let sixties and early seventies; so I played and danced to all the new releases by the Yoruba musicians at that time. There were also the motor boys at Igbobi garage, who would request particular artists, sang and danced in their fresh clothes with handkerchiefs in their hands and pockets, in the evenin

This is good, may be the youths will take a cue from the great vision you have, so the music will not die a natural death.

EgbaAlake, even though I enjoy the Yusuf you uploaded, but I have all Yusuf song in my I pod. I love this Lefty so much, word is not enough to describe how I feel, I could talk about the nostalgic of Sir Adeniji Adele (Musendiku Adele, omo Brahimo, afinju oba ti nke yasin) or the memories of growing up in Lagos.
    Thanks

@tbeehak 4 those of us that grew up in Lagos Island, we are aware of d influence these Eyo, igunnuko stuffs had on musicians of that period, if you listen to Yusufu Olatunji vol 7, he started with tribute 2 one Adelanwa Sariyu Onigunnu, "kolewu wa taba sawo igunnu, awa l'ani daasu" It was a common practise 4 their sakara drummers 2 beat d igunuko style beats. still cannot understand why he had problem with them. Most fuji artists of today are feeding on the works of the likes of lefty, yusuf etc

Music for the oldies. It is gratifying to note that the young ones are begining to give it some attention. Please don't take it as a sign of End Time.

@Okuboro I remembered that story, and at the time I felt bad for Lefty, because no other musician promote Egungun,Eyo,Igunuko, etc like Lefty in songs. I remembered as Adamu Orisha(Eyo) we gathered in my street at former Shopono street and just dance away to Lefty during the break.

Lefty Salami aka Baba federal, released his first album in 1949, he became an household name with over 36 records to his credit. He was later accused of insulting the Igunuko masquerade in one of his record, all his efforts to refute this unfounded allegations proved abortive, he later fell terribly sick & being diagnosed of various ailments, he died on 29/12/81 mysteriously, just like Yusufu Olatunji, Abibu Oluwa was also said to have died through food poison. These 3 were the greatest in sakara

These Sakara musicians died, not misterously, but as a result of heavy consumption of alcohol, which negatively affected their organs; unfortunately, without taking these alcoholic drinks, they cannot perform at their optimal best. May their spirits rest in peace. At least, they left us artistic musical songs which kept their memories alive in us, and their great fans and admirers.

@@igeadubi5883 Lefty Salami who took over the Abibu Oluwa band later adopted the alias. He referred to himself as Baba n federal in many of his live plays.

EgbaAlake I must say this is a one of your greatest upload, even as a lagos boy, I've never come accross this particular record before, anytime I listen to lefty salami or Abibu Oluwa, it evokes memory of my late father.I have the live rendition of most of the lyrics here though, but this is an ancient recording, I could feel the youthfulness in Baba federal's voice here.Thank you, I wish I could download this into my mp3 device.

Hello, I am just wondering does anyone here know of any Yoruba websites for cultural information e.g folk/ children's stories, recipes, music and also any websites where I can buy Yoruba clothes? Also does anyone know of any decent Yoruba or African cultural shops in London? I know of the clothes shops in Deptford.

@bjmighty, you must be a proper lagosian to know all those places. I grew up @ Enu Owa st, and in the 70s, my dad was one of the regular visitors to "Ese Iga" located at the frontage of Iga Iduganran, a relaxation point for lagosians of the time. This was the place you'll get to listen to series of lefty & Abibu songs. You must also know fine teacher, who was renowned for his drink problems. Lagos was a peaceful and a great place to live in those days during the reign of PAPA Adeyinka Oyekan.
