The Hardhome sequence of this episode is stunning, my favorite of the series. It’s the first time any of the characters fully realize what’s coming after them. Jon can hardly fathom what he’s looking at. Kit Harrington is amazing in this episode.
That part where he lifted his arms and rose everyone up (without the need to touch them) was the most intimidating scene I’ve ever seen in a show. It was a “You have no idea. You are so out of your league.” Viewpoint. Wow.
25:25 mark - The Night King (the one with the spikes on his head) is the main leader. The White Walkers (like the one Jon killed) are his generals & The Wights are all the dead people/zombies that make up his army of foot soldiers. Jon was able to kill the one White Walker because his sword "Long Claw" is made of Valyrian steel. It was the family heirloom of House Mormont, given to Jon by the former Lord Commander of The Night's Watch, Jeor Mormont (Jorah's father). Jorah is not able to claim it because he was banished from his family long ago... So in this fight scene we learned that not only does Obsidian aka Dragonglass destroys the undead, but so do weapons made of Valyrian steel. This will come into play later...
@daleclark2376 that may or may not be true. The truth of it is the way Valerian Steel is made was lost with the Doom of Valeria. The only thing that is known for sure is it was made with magic believed to be similar to the way Dragonglass is made.
@@johnfede7057 , it's true that it's only a theory, but it makes sense to me. Somehow, through old magic or some lost forging techniques, they wove obsidian into the steel. Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. ✌️❤️
I bet Valyrian steel was made with crushed obsidian or something, maybe that's the "impurity" they mixed with the steel. In real life it would make the blade weaker, but who knows, maybe there's some magic way they did it. That would keep with the ice and fire duality, otherwise it does kinda seem like an oversight that these two unconnected things are the only things that can destroy them. Maybe GRRM was planning on explaining it later in the series.
Simply the best episode of the show. In fact the battle at Hardhome deserved a full show to itself. Loved that stare between Jon and the Night King and what a power play to just raise your arms and create more soldiers. Brilliant TV.
It probably did deserve it's own episode, but the surprise of the attack was the best part of the show. They never even hinted that a battle was coming. It felt like a regular episode where the plot was moving along at a good pace and then the switch. Very unexpected.
wun wun the giant, played by ian whyte. ian also played the mountain while arya was at harrenhall, season 2 i think. he was also a white walker for a few minutes when sam was hiding behind a rock in the snow at season end.
hello Amber Arya is basically learning to be a silent assassin. Able to take on any character to accomplish her mission. The "Many-Face God" is basically having the ability to blend into the crown and become anyone. Jaqen was able to look like other people if you remember from previous seasons. Ollie can't accept working and allying with the Wildings because of how his parents were killed. So he still wants revenge. He doesn't understand the threat of the Wight Walkers. This will be important later. The sword did not shatter because it is Valeria Steel. It has a sort of "magic" that is able to withstand the "magical" existence of the 'undead' and work just as good and 'dragonglass'. Hopefully, you understand now why they say to burn all the bodies after death. It is because if not, they can be raise up again to fight as enemies like at the end of this episode.
For me this and the next 2 episodes of S5 is some of the best episodes of television I’ve ever seen. Peter is in a few great movies. He’s in a western on Tubi right now called The Thicket with Juliette Lewis. It’s absolutely fantastic.
One of my favorite anecdotes comes from this episode. In the script, Jon’s retreat was described as “Jon Snow escapes in small boat, standing upright like George Washington crossing the Delaware - but with better hair,” or words to that effect! Still loving sharing these with you, well done! Peace …
The ending scene certainly clues people in to how serious of a threat the army of the dead is. And every time the dead kill the living, they become extra soldiers for the Night King's army. How do you fight a foe that kills your side and then turns them into his own soldiers?
I first saw Aiden Gillen (Littlefinger) in a show that's considered by many to be one of the greatest television shows in American history, "The Wire." I don't think he showed up much until S3, but he was, of course, very good in it.
peter's been in a lot of stuff. "x-men: days of future's past", "chronicles of narnia: the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe", "elf", and even in some upcoming marvel movies amber hasn't watched yet.
One of my favorite things about this episode was the blurb HBO used for it. "Arya makes progress in her training. Sansa confronts an old friend. Cersei struggles. Jon travels." Up to this point each episode 9 had been the big episode and I fully expected this episode 8 to be a setup episode. "Jon travels" 🙄
Remember the Lord Commander Jeor Mormont gave Jon his family sword in season 1 after Jon and Ghost saved him from a wight. He told Jon that it was made of valerian steel. And the dragon glass that was left at Hardhome is not nearly enough to fight off all of those wights and white walkers.
think about this... in a war where the dead rise up again to fight against the living... the numbers will forever be shifting against the living. that's why the idea of vampires. a zombie infection, and so on, can be so disturbing.
One of my favorite Peter Dinklage films is called The Station Agent, with Patricia Clarkson as well. A sort of think piece, with dramatic elements. Probably not for everyone, but his performance was outstanding.
25:17 "It Shattered All The Swords, Except For That One" Yes, Amber, Jon's sword is made of Valyrian Steel. Thus, it's as effective against the White Walkers as Dragon Glass is
Peter Dinklage is a very talented actor and has been in many films - including Elf (he’s the children’s book author.) The Station Agent is my favorite film of his. Understated film but incredibly touching.
I always get excited when I see a reactor has reached 'Hardhome' ... such an epic episode! And yes, Amber, THIS is what really matters, not who sits on the stupid iron throne!
The White Walkers are the bosses like the 1 Jon killed. All the other ones are called Wights. They have weapons so cold that they shatter steel like glass. Jon's sword didn't break because it's Valerian Steel.
It's mostly only book readers that know about Valyrian steel and its significance. Even though it's identified by characters in the series, average show watchers usually don't catch on. There's only a handful of Valyrian steel blades & swords left in Westeros. When you can identify those who are in possession of Valyrian steel, you'll know which characters are going to be able to make a difference when it truly matters.
Karsi (played by Birgitte Sorensen) of the wildlings is also a bad-A singer, u can see her in the movie Putch Perfect 2. The night king and his army r def terrifying. Thanx so much, take care, Peace
So in the books they go into alot more detail about how Ramsey breaks theon. It's softly mention that Ramsey takes women who bore him on the hunt. What the show doesn't say is that Ramsey is obsessed with hunting dogs and when he goes on the hunt the woman he kills name is given to the hound and they become his bitches. Essentially what Ramsey did to theon was train him like one of his hounds and turned him into one of his bitches which is why he makes him sleep in the kennels and reminds him of his new name. To dehumanizing theon into a state of complacency. Ramsey terror is held back in the show quite a bit.
You go from hating Theon for turning on the Starks who considered him family to feeling extremely sorry for him. I can’t think of anybody in Winterfell who has suffered more. And you go from hating Cersei for all of her evils to taking joy when her plans backfire and she is caught in her own snare. Sadly, so is her only remaining son, the only good Lannister.
With Arya's storyline so far; the thin man is a gambler who bets against sailors. The sailors put up a certain amount of money before they sail off to gather wages. If a sailor makes it back safely, then they owe the thin man money. But if the sailor dies on the trip, the thin man agrees to pay the sailor's family lost wages. The thin man has dishonored one of these agreements so someone related to one of the sailors went to the faceless men to have him assassinated.

Jon's sword Longclaw is made of Valerian Steel. It is made with magic similar to the way Dragonglass is made in the show. Which is why it acts similar.
Haha! "Mad chaos erupts" - and this said before a sea of crazed undead come swarming in to unlife everyone - what better way to condense all of GoT down to a few words? :D And yeah, these zombies are crazy mad swift and terrible and focused on one thing only - unlife everything that still breathes. They're completely oblivious to their own safety, they just swarm and swarm and swarm, far more awful than the shuffling undead we usually see in horror. Sure, there's room for the shuffling zombies too in the right time and place, but if I had the chance to pick which type of undead to meet, I'd choose the shuffling ones over these swarmers any day of the week, and twice on unday. (Ugh. Terrible attempt at a pun!) Why? Because I could just outrun them. (They could get to me while I'm sleeping tho, admittedly... So, no sleeping AT ALL when there's zombies around I suppose!)
The Hardhome sequence of this episode is stunning, my favorite of the series. It’s the first time any of the characters fully realize what’s coming after them. Jon can hardly fathom what he’s looking at. Kit Harrington is amazing in this episode.
