Murray Perahia plays it like a story, he is feeling the piece. in some other interpretations i didn't feel the music and it was with lack of emotion and not rich. This interpretation is so full, rich, colorful and dynamic with emphasizes and emotions. Thank you for this amazing playing Perahia!🙏
Me too! All his interpretations are like that. He performed Beethoven's Appasionata so well at this same concert, that I can't imagine a better version than that. Everything is perfect: tempo, phrasing, dynamics, rhythm.
His Schubert also sounds nothing like his Beethoven or Bach. This is top notch stuff, no doubt, but I am missing his deep singing sonority; perhaps that doesn't work with Schubert.
At Carnegie Hall in 2017, he did not give an encore. Everyone was disappointed. Looking in his face here, which might be a recording from around that time, he seems to be in physical pain. Unfortunately, his health has not been the best. Perhaps he wasn't in good health at Carnegie Hall either. His performance was great nonetheless. And I was fortunate enough to be there, irrespective of the encore or lack thereof. Best wishes for good health, maestro.
Murray recorded the Impromptu back in 83 for CBS... It's a pretty amazing CD actually even though the actual quality of the recording itself is not up to par with more recent recording techniques....It's extremely fluid playing..
I agree with Volodya, this is an extraordinary performance, and I would not guessed it was a roll recording; the gradations and variety of touch , the voice leading… quite wonderful!
As much as I love Murray Perahia's interpretation, and I even grew up on his recording and so I consider his interpretation to be a standard, ... upon closer examination, I am now discovering a few details that are missing in this particular video. For instance, the first 8 measures should be piano and then the repeat of the theme should then be forte in measure 9. Here there seems to be no dynamic contrast. There is also a fermata just before the recapitulation at 2:50 which he barely makes noticeable at all and could be lengthened to at least be longer in contrast to the other places where he makes similar rubato such as at 3:38. I hate to point out these small details, since I can never dream of playing at his level, but it still could be even better.
Hi Paul. I understand this too, and I believe that his performance has a lot of amazing qualities and some ideas that could have been played better. But I do have to say that in general, playing the piano is quite subjective. I believe Mr.Murray had a different interpretation of the piece than you, which is why he didnt emphasize the fermata and other small details.
@@jasonshaye3567 Hi Jason. Yes, we both agree that he is an amazing pianist. As much as I do not mean to start an argument here, although music can be subjective the details I wish to hear such as "the first 8 measures should be piano and then the repeat of the theme should then be forte in measure 9" (and the fermata) are not just 'my' interpretation, but they are an integral part of what Schubert wrote just the same as the rhythms and pitches. A sublime performance, of course -- but can anyone explain to me why EVERYBODY plays this piece so fast? The marking is Allegro, not Prestissimo.
