As a post-doctoral researcher and conservationist, Flávia’s unwavering commitment to protecting small cats has only grown stronger. Under the guidance of her PhD co-adviser, Mauro Lucherini, and with the support of Dr. Jim Sanderson, who is establishing Working Groups for small cats, Flávia has taken on the role of creating and coordinating the Geoffroy’s Cat Working Group (GCWG). Officially launched on December 1st, the group has already attracted passionate partners from all the countries where the species is found. Together, they are building a network to mitigate threats to the Geoffroy’s cat, starting with education and the development of a comprehensive action plan. By documenting each project, engaging with communities, and sharing camera trap photos and relevant news, Flávia and her team are following in the footsteps of the successful Fishing Cat Conservation Alliance.

Our conservation efforts
they encompass various strategies
including; for example,
neutering and vaccination of domestic dogs and cats
alongside the construction or
repair of kennels
to mitigate the conflicts between the dogs
and the wild cats
to avoid the disease transmitting the rural communities
because in some areas
the wildcats are very close to the rural communities.
We focus on repairing hen houses
to stop the retaliatory killing
while actively engage the rural communities
through educational initiatives.
For example we make some events in
in the schools and we show them
the importance of those species.
