I picked up a pugs 4 years ago with similar problems. I upgraded the wheel set, cockpit, and replaced the brake pads and cables. Now it is my primary MTB and I race it successfully. These og surlys are so good and they last forever.
Alot of the newer fat tires aren't round, I think they were made alot better 5,10 years ago. Back when the tires said 15psi max on the side wall. I haven't seen a perfectly round fat tire in a while.
i have read that pros use really thin grease or oil to lubricate in the winter,to prevent stiffness in the movement, i will have to try this next winter.
I went from bud and lou with tubes to jumbo jim 4.0s tubeless and I could not believe the difference. I'm sure you have been told this before but when it comes to fat bikes the tubes have go, especially after hearing that your concerned with rolling resistance, it's an instant 10% drop even if you don't change tires.
I have had that recommended to me a few times but you have been the most convincing by far. You got me. I’m going to swap over. I appreciate your insight and look forward to seeing the difference for myself. Thank you! 👍
@@jeremygoertz when it comes to regular mtb or road bikes either way with or without tubes has debatable pros and cons so I reserve this advice specifically when talking about fat bikes. It's just a better experience overall.
Excellent vid, I just serviced my hubs, which were utterly mangled, and the bike now goes like the clappers (Farley). I will say this mate, go tubeless! It's so easy, and it's not just about punctures, the bike rides better. This might be placebo effect, but I do have Strava stats that confirm my theories! Anyway, greetings from the UK. 🤘
Thank you! Right on. I’m thinking about switching over to tubeless on this beast. I swapped my karate monkey over and can notice a difference and haven’t had any problems because of it so I should just get on this one already. Cheers from Canada👍
What a coincidence. Yesterday I took apart the rear hub on my mukluk. I didn't have the patience to get the alignment perfect, and instead just re-adjusted the brake and derailleur.
That’s sweet! Yeah, the first time I put it together I was so far out that I couldn’t adjust the brake caliber to even get close so I figured I should get it at least in the ball park. 👍
I wish my tyres were as easy to work with as yours. They're an absolute barsteward to get off! I had to use a pair of vicegrips to remove the rear and ended up with an egg shaped rim!
Jeremy, great video on the simple things that make big improvements. Do you know the brand, model #, for the Blind Bearing Puller and Slide Hammer? Thank you.
Fortunately it's not a big thing replacing the bearings on those Surly hubs and working on a Shimano Rear Hub looked like an Deore XT it takes just a little bit time + TLC.
It's amazing how many people will not do maintenance on something and just get rid of it. A guy I worked with was given a Jeep Grand Cherokee because it wouldn't run and the owner didn't even want to bother with it. He checked the normal stuff why an engine won't start, a coil wire later for $12 and he drove it all the time. Trust me, there is NOTHING that you own that is "maintenance free", I don't care what you or the manufacturer/seller claims.
I did some digging and it turns out that because standard hubs weren’t very wide when this bike was made, Surly offset the hub so the chain would still clear the massive tires. Rear hubs were wider than front hubs so they stuck a rear hub on the front wheel as well
what are your thoughts on these 100mm Clown Shoe rims compared with 80mm rims? How does it affect tyre profile, traction, speed, cornering, etc? Is the presumably extra weight of an extra 20mm worth it?
Very pleasant to watch you work on this Surly. Great job!
Thank you

Good job, I’ve always repacked new sealed bearings with more grease as well. Often they do not come with much grease at all.
This is What makes RUclips Great,
that time was worth IT, Bearings are Vital ".. Cheers BuD
Thank you
Jeremy I finally got a MTB, first one. Rode BMX in HS. Keep all the great videos up but these bike updates feel special. My best to the family.
Right on! I bet you’ll have a lot of fun with that. Thank you so much. All the best to you and yours from me 👍
My Nates are incredibly hard to get off and on. I dread having to do it. If it's cold, forget about it.

Snap. I have the same bike but with Hope hubs, brakes and drivetrain. Still have the heavy Bud and Lou tyres on it though.

I like your videos. The Surly bikes seem great. It gets cold over there like here in Iceland

Somehow I don’t think you minded too much about spending some time getting it working right. 🚲
You are 100% correct. My wife tells me she thinks I like working on bicycles more than riding them. I think she might be right😆👍

Oh man, that stinks!
I had the exact same issue with my second hand Wednesday. I blame the former owner rather than Surly

Awsome video, Jeremy! Interesting bike 😃🚲
Thank you so much. And thanks for watching 👍
Happy fathers day Jeremy!
Thanks Ian! You too buddy👍

I don’t even like bikes and I enjoyed this. Thanks!
Thank you so much! I appreciate that👍
Hi Mate, I have Wednesday, with Nate 3.8 tyres, highly recommended! :) cheers

This is such a good video and such a nice bike!
What’s the story with the offset chain stays again? I think they offered an offset fork for it as well

For me the fatbike is the only bike. Good video and educational
I just got me one and I love it . thank you for this video ,
Are the bearings the same a roller skate and skate board bearings? They look like it.
Excellent stuff. 🤘🤘
Thats my kind of easy riding man ✌🏻👍🏻🤝🏻
Still a great deal bro.
nice video, man! subscribed!
Thanks for the sub!
Nice bike I got a malus myself
Ah, those bearings were really bad
nice job

These are the only fat rims I’ve ever ridden so I really can’t speak to that. Cheers 👍
@@jeremygoertz fair enough - they must be pretty good at least given you like the bike
Whynot tubeless?
Does anyone in the comments have a bike the recommend that’s under $300? Mostly riding gravel trails. New to riding and don’t want to spend a ton
Used giant Talon or Trek Marlin
Cool! 👍
Make it electric.:)
Hahaha! That would be fun👍
Just No.
