Hannah seems to have been aware of Israel's fall. By this I mean the people rejecting a judge and priest system of government which they want replaced with a king. Governments rise and fall. But what are these pillars? I've been through all the ups and downs with Jesus present, but am I missing something important about pillars.

Abraham lived 1,000 years before Hannah and Elkanah. God knows all, knew what was going to happen to Israel. Look at 1 Sam 2:30-34. God doesn't see time as we do, so as we do, JMHO, I am not a scholar, but I do believe God is knows about all in all time and in all circumstances. He calls us individually, not based on family backgrounds. Answer to John Buchan.

Mr. Begg, thanks for your well-prepared presentation. May I ask your opinion? At Duet 6:7 parents are commanded to train their own children to love God. So why do you think God blessed Hannah's plan to have Eli (who was not such a great father) raise Samuel?

Indria, thanks for your kind reply. But if parents are not the best ones to train their young ones while they are children, why did God give the instruction at Deut 6:7 ? Samson, for example, was trained by his parents according to the instruction of God's angel. As were all the prophets, and Jesus. Can I offer a different idea, based on a clue at 1 Sam 2:5, “The barren has given birth to seven,“ This “barren” woman could not have been Hannah, because Hannah had a total of six children. But it could have been Leah, who was temporarily barren, and had a total of seven children (six sons and a daughter). Abraham protected his “loved” wife Sarah from being persecuted by the “unloved” wife Hagar, and he protected Isaac from the being persecuted by Hagar’s son Ishmael. But when Jacob did not protect Joseph from his jealous half-brothers ("unloved" Leah’s sons) God intervened to save Joseph’s life by relocating Joseph far away to Egypt. So, when Hannah saw that Elkanah was unlikely to protect young Samuel from "unloved" Peninah’s hateful and jealous sons, she appealed to God to relocate Samuel to the safety of Shiloh. How does that sound? Can this explain why this was a special case for Hannah, and therefore did not apply to others in the Bible?

Indira, thanks for kindly replying. As a father this question really bothered me. Are you open to a different idea, that this was Hannah's and God's way of protecting Samuel from being killed? When Sarah appealed to Abraham regarding Ishmael’s dangerously persecuting Isaac, Abraham protected Isaac. When Jacob didn't protect Joseph from his hateful brothers, God intervened to protect Joseph by relocating Joseph far away to Egypt. So, when Hannah saw that Elkanah was unlikely to protect young Samuel from Peninah’s hateful and jealous sons, could she have appealed to God to relocate Samuel to the safety of Shiloh? God recognized that this unique remedy for Hannah's problem would also provide a replacement for Eli's bad sons. How does that sound to you?
