"Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Wednesday offered an unwavering defense of his state's recently enacted universal free school meals program, arguing that Republican efforts to means-test the initiative would have created burdensome and needless administrative barriers.
"The haves and the have-nots in the school lunchroom is not a necessary thing. Just feed our children," Walz, a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, said during a press conference."

The free lunch program is supposed to be anonymous, but most kids know which other kids are getting free lunch. I work at 2 schools that offer free lunch to all kids and I can tell you from first hand knowledge, there are kids that enjoy their only real meal they get on a daily basis because their families are truly in need. These kids are in school for at least 8 hrs a day and a school feeding them lunch everyday for free is not going to kill the city, county, state or federal budget. Republicans continue to show they care about life while in the womb but could care less once outside the womb.

As with basically every thing that you can see in our country and say this about, we *literally* can afford it, but are *actively choosing* (at a higher political level) not to implement these programs. Medicare doesn't negotiate drug prices despite the fact that we pay 10x more than other countries for drugs. We could literally be saving billions of dollars each year on that alone, regardless of *anything* else we did.
We have all the resources to end almost every issue American citizens are facing. The richest people in our country are just *refusing* to allow us to implement them via their bought and paid for politicians.

And no child should ever have to undergo the embarrassment of being told they can't have lunch because their care-giver fell behind on paying for their school meals. And providing meals for all students across the board takes away one more thing for bullies to use to pick on other students about.
And if feeding children is so offensive, you may home school your own children or send them to private school.

Couples with an annual income up to $100,000 would be exempt from state tax on Social Security benefits, with a phased-out exemption for married filers who make up to $140,000.

I once saw this PSA where 6 kids are in school & during lunch 1 of them had no food so a kid that brought their lunch gave the boy some chips. The PSA was about how roughly 1 in 6 kids in The U.S. face poverty in that they go hungry, & for many kids school lunch may be the only meal they get a day. So, this is why it's so important for programs like SNAP to remain in place to ensure we prevent actual living children from going hungry in The U.S.

I am proud to be a Minnesotan where the DFL Democrat Farmer Labor party has been the party in control most of my life. We need only look to east to our drunken Republican neighbors in Wisconsin and see how much better off we are in Minnesota by every measurable metric. I really think the Dems in the rest of the country need to take a note and get in touch with the farmers and labors unions the way they do in Minnesota. Republicans have co-opted so much of the farming and blue collar workers while never doing anything to actually help them.

I'm old now, I guess. I don't ever remember paying for a school lunch. I brought lunch usually because I liked choosing better food. But for goodness sake, the food isn't a really significant expense for school kids. It's all the tech, the property, the labor, the maintenance. A gargantuan crate of lasagna is hardly a massive government overreach or benefit to the rich kids. This should be nothing we ever argue about. Just feed the damn kids when you have them all day. That's applicable to everyone, everywhere, for every situation. If you are in charge of the kids for more than 4 hours, feed them. Done.

What if their parents got a divorce and one parent just screwed the other and can’t afford it. What if the parents technically should be able to afford it but have insane medical bills. What if the parents are neglectful or worse. I can come up with a thousand different scenarios that won’t/can’t be taken into account by a means test. Just feed freaking kids.
