Literally ten minutes into the movie: "Oh, I wish I had wings!"

  • @32JEAN34

May I say that this movie isn't about making sense but rather experimenting with style breakings and just being creative in a bold way. From an art perspective this is so much more interesting than any generic 3D animated story told today.
Also: I find that this story may not make sense to anybody but looked at it in a feminist perspective there is something I really want to point out:
Thumbelina may not be the smartest character and not be a role model to young girls. (and yes this is also okay, not every woman has to be a role model! - that's just another pressure issue society puts on women imo)
BUT every character she meets on her adventure is something every woman in this world has to face from others.
The frogs tell her that marrying and caring for another person and children isn't fun and she should be independent and having a career. They belittle being a stay at home mom and want to persuade Thumbelina in thinking the same. She is open about it but doesn't want to be forced into it.
The bug makes something out of her that she is not. He thinks she is beautiful but that isn't enough for him. He listens to what other people think and tears her down when he realizes Thumbelina is different from his friends. Like women today are told they are beautiful then another trend comes on and these women are forgotten and rejected.
The mole thinks just because he has money and power he can have her. He is selfish and expects her to make him happy. He doesn't listen to anything she says.
The mouse wants to persuade Thumbelina into a marriage because of money. Thumbelina thinks she is all alone and she will never go back home. She is desperate, mourning about a big loss and really considering to marry the mole because of the money aspect, because she doesn't know what else to do. Like many women on this earth.
In the end it is a cliche ending for us. But it is an ending Thumbelina chooses for herself. She marries the prince because SHE wants to and makes the decision for herself. I see the wings here as something symbolic. She chose for herself and so she got her wings as a symbol of independence. Now she can fly for herself and make her own journey.

@@tomsgrexit yes! I love this movie so much and people underestimate this story everytime just because Thumbelina isn't a typical empowering badass character. But not every female character has to be badass. Stories can have an empowering and important message in a small and quiet way with showing hardships and mistakes. It's the same with Little Mermaid which is also written by Hans Christian Andersen. Ariel is also not your typical badass character. But the movie is as much as important because it also shows really sensitive problems and it's also really symbolic.

@@orangeslash1667 when you watch this movie with an extreme feminist mindset (every femal characted has to be classic masculine and self help is the most important thing) then yes. But The Litte Mermaid is not about this at all. The Disney Version is the only movie where the princess character isn't supposed to be a role model. It's shown several times in the movie and made really clear. People are just too closed minded because Ariel makes real mistakes and not your typical socially accepted mistakes. It's a moral story. And it frustrates me how people can watch it and blatantly ignore this very obvious topic everytime.

First things you should know about Don Bluth: He used to work at Disney but he left and formed his own studio in the 80s where he made films like the Secret of NIMH, An American Tail and my personal favourite, the Land Before Time. This is one of his lesser films from the 90s, like the Pebble and the Penguin or a Troll in Central Park. But even in the 90s, as you can see, his animation budget is PLENTIFUL.

I have a soft spot for Thumbelina~^.^ Growing up in the 90's it was one of the movies I owned on VHS (meaning I did not need to wait for it to air, did not have to watch a recorded version with commercials, or rent it from the movie rental stores which we went to often but I was only allowed one "older" movie or my sister and I had to agree on a new release) So, the movie made it into the VCR often when there was nothing for kids on, like when I was home sick, in the middle of the day~ I think I even chose this movie over several of the Disney ones I owned, too; I don't know why (this, Swan Princess, and Quest For Camelot were probably the things I watched the most). This means my love for it was not wrapped in nostalgia completely, but instead something I can't put my finger on~

In the original tale of thumbelina I’m pretty sure she only meets the prince at the end of the story. They probably had him show up early and fall in love with her so that the ending made more realistic sense. Granted it’s still not realistic but hey it’s a fairy tale.

Also, if a vampire can break into a girl's house, I guess a fairy can do the same. Also, they both sparkle, just fairies always sparkle and vampires only do it in sunlight - plus it's only the wings on fairies.

I grew up with this on VHS; it may have been the first non-Disney thing I was introduced to (back before Warner Bros. sold the rights to Fox). Even as a small child I could tell that the way Don Bluth was doing things was, uhhhhhhh, very different. His follow-up film, A Troll in Central Park, convinced me that nobody will ever need drugs 'cause we have Don Bluth. Gradually I discovered his four classics from the 80s (The Secret of NIMH; An American Tail; The Land Before Time; All Dogs go to Heaven) and as an adult was lucky enough to take an online story-writing course he was teaching. I hope more people react to his work.

You should react to the Adventures of Tom Thumb and Thumbelina. It took a lot of inspiration from this one so obviously, it's mid. The animation is a lot jankier and simplistic (in kind of a rough way) I personally find it more frustrating to watch than the Don Bluth version. The Don Bluth version was mostly boring, but Tom Thumb and Thumbelina was easier to poke fun at. It at least has a more useful Thumbelina though.

The pacing in this movie is a disaster. I will admit that. I was never sure about when the first song with the farm animals took place as a small child, and now I’m even less certain.
It implies it’s the same day, but has a time skip, and having it on the same day, considering the context of the song, wouldn’t make sense.
