Couldn't agree with you more about this wonderful gem. The best part is, when not underwater or attached to a rally car, it is stuck to my windshield where it makes for a brilliantly smooth loop recorder of my daily drives. One tiny camera, so many uses.
Avean I think both the GoPro Hero 5 and 6 are great the Sony I believe has better video quality than both but the touchscreen and convenience of the GoPro Hero 5 is excellent and the microphone is good to the microphone on the Sony is excellent it just depends on what you want to do I prefer the Sony for my own personal use
I use an HDR-AS300 for action, but have an FDR-X3000 that I dropped - messed up the mic jack and sent it for repair. It works now, but has some goofy issues. I do LOVE LOVE LOVE that both cameras have a 3.5mm stereo mic jack. I had forgotten that the FDR-X3000 would do 120FPS at 1080p... I may have to mess around with that.
Honestly, I got this camera and hated it. Returned it within a couple weeks. I don’t think it’s worth the price you pay. Although it has good specs its UX in my opinion isn’t worth the burden. But that’s just me, I know a couple people who use it and love it.
I am using this camera for mostly all of my videos.. it is indeed very good, but after shooting in 4K over an hour (without any housing) the footage starts to get a bit blurred for some reason...
Someone was mentioning that earlier in the week, I’ve never seen that happen but I also don’t record 4K for that long. That’s something I’ll watch out for 👍
Right that is quite weird, but it doesn't take all shine of this camera. Thanks for sharing your review with us... as usual a cool and well done video!
i think this action cam (sport cam) is not prepared for recording one long videos (temp of sensor and procesor). Any sport cam is prepared for it, it is not car cam.
Well that was my expectations as well.. today I got the blurring issue after 4 min 32sec filming in 4K without housing.. I will try some others tests tomorrow.. if it won't perform well I'm afraid I will need service the cam after the first month using it :(
Having had a few vacations with this cam, it has allot of great positives, but there are a few downsides... 1) the remote viewfinder is very slow and needs to reconnect much to often for quick use. 2) time laps has a limited amount of jpg's, long before the ssd is full, it wont record any more timelapses. 3) timelaps can only be saved in jpgs, that are much bigger that directly to video, you need an app to create the actual video. 4) the mic input is a balanced level, and nearly imposible to find a good mic for this can, no settings can be adjusted for this in the cam. The battery runs out quickly when recording 4k, but thats normal... buy extra batteries!
Does it still have the overheating issue? I bought one last year and with it in the case it would only record in 4k for about 30 minutes then it would overheat and shut down. Did a google search and found out many other people were having the same issue. So I returned it & ended up getting a couple of used x1000v's
I love Sony and use an early Handycam (maybe 5 years old) for all my videos. It's small enough to stuff in my pocket. I have dropped it several times onto hard surfaces including the road as I stepped out of the car and it slipped out of my pocket. After brief concussion and blurred vision, an open and close of the lens protector and it it was up an running again! I am impressed by that alone. It has a Zeiss Tessar lens, gives great quality (a Go Pro friend has compared it to his). BUT it has no ext mic socket and is prone to wind noise on its own. I use a separate recording mic occasionally only since it is a pain clapping and lining up spikes when editing. I don't get bendy trees and rubber lamp posts with it either. I might just buy the next model up with ext mic socket and hopefully a waterproof housing as I do LOT of Scottish mountain walking videos and it has been known to rain here...;-). Thanks for the info!
The biggest thing missing is the record button lock out on previous fdrx1000v/as200v. This fdrx3000 keeps turning on in my pants pocket. I've had to open it up a couple times to fix the BOSS in it after it fell from my windshield and another time it fell off my counter.
With its superb image stabilization, does one really Need a gimble?????? Simply a shooting grip/'stick' seems to work just as well for significantly less, and you can mount a bar for the mounting of multiple accessories...
On my last trip i used this camera to make some videos about driving and i set it in medium angle. It was really bad, somehow is out of focus. I wouldn't change for a gopro, i played with 5 for a while and it wasn't to good.
I am sold. Nearly bought a poxy Hero 6 but you have swung me around. I will use this for outdoor and indoor vlogging with some box lights and external mic until I can afford a better in house set up.
I bought the Sony HDR-15 about 4 years ago to mount to my motorcycle half-helmet for it's ease of use. I played with a friends GoPro at the time and found it difficult to remember which buttons to push. The Sony was easy-peasy. The only true downside I could see was the inability to easily record audio from a separate/external mic, just like the X3000. I recently bought a Hero4 Silver and SENA GP10 backpack to pair with my SENA SMH10-11. The HDR-15 is now just a backup for shooting fill video if desired. I think Sony could do better if they really tried.
Sony's action cam style camera's are great i have several action camera's in my arsenal which includes Garmin's flagship virb 30 im personally using Sonys FDR X1000V which is the baby brother to the 3000 and i have to say after nearly 8 months of use it just a outstanding camera and if i was to buy another camera in the future it would be the FDR X3000 without a doubt........ great review by the way 👍😀
Yep love my X3000... Heres a tip for better field audio on a budget. Go to your local michaels or Joanne fabrics and get seat cushion foam (medium density). Cut a small "U" shape, and scotch tape it to the sides of the cam so it cradles around over the mic holes. I have found it to be a very effective wind noise filter. It interferes with the dive case though, so thats kind of a bummer. But the bonus is it doesn't make the rig significantly bigger or heavier.
This is the second video I see saying the Sony's menu is hard to use. Without reading the manual, I was able to go through all the menu settings on Sony; while I could not do anything but to change the shooting mode on Gopro 6
It's waterproof for a quick dip without the case. I got some 1600mah batteries from Enegon and they extend the battery life to over two hours and that's with the WiFi on. Great camera!
You should have tried the camera with lavalier microphone before giving the microphone input any praise as a lot of people are facing issues with it. Røde Videomic Pro is bigger than the camera itself, expensive and doesn't sound better at all on the Sony IMO.
Let’s say if I choose this camera to record, the things I would like to record would be swimming, hiking, and any other adventures. But would this be the one to go with or should I maybe go for a different camera to use for vlogs?
I have one for over a year..... and it is amazing in many respects but it picks up the smallest puff of wind. I have now resorted to using an external mic with a dead cat.
People complained about distortion with the built in mic jack as they couldn't lower the sensitivity but that sounded good. How did you mount that? Thanks!
I use this camera for vlogging on my channel. Just wonder what selfie stick you are using. I’m talking about the one you had attached with the rode mic
I have owned go pros for years. After many RUclips reviews I decided to go with a FDR X 3000. The 4K video was really great. My still images were totally opposite. The still images were terrible. I tried everything and found out others were having the same problem with very grainy and blurry still images. I decided to go with a hero 6 Black and return the Sony.
Yeah thats something I rarely talk about because I don't know if I've ever taken a picture with an action camera. The GoPro is a 12mp camera as opposed to the 8 on the FDR X3000 so that makes total sense. I'm glad you were able to get something that works for you! Thanks for the info!
I have an old Sony HDR-AZ1 that records 1080. Image indoor is pretty bad. My old GoPro Hero 3+ does better indoor footage. But I mainly use the Sony attached to my helmet when I'm riding my motorcycle for ONE reason. The narrow formfactor. It narrow and doesnt generate a lot of windresistance like the wide GoPro.
Hey TEDD, have you played with the HDR-AS300 yet? I like the 4K capability in the FDR-X3000 but at only 30fps, I may stick with 1080p60 which the AS300 can do plus it still has a mic jack. Where the X3000 may win is the superior image stabilization.
When you mention that a camera is waterproof or comes with a waterproof case, it helps to also mention the depth that it's rated for. Just sayin'......some of us scuba dive with our cameras.
this is my favorite camera! only down side is the battery life is pretty bad. if the lcd screen was backlit, it would be perfect! i use usb power for longer shoots. the image quality and wide angle is perfect!
Great video man, I just got that camera for my flyfishing trips. What setting do you use for the outdoor videos? Should I use 4K or 1080? 4K takes so much space tho. Thanks again
It's one of the best Action Cam by far and there are not much brand out there could surpass it's technology, unfortunately Sony never listen to consumer's need by producing accessories to enhance its capability, like making an adapter for gimbal.
Yep. The AS300 is just cheaper to buy but has same picture/audio quality and video stability. It's almost the perfect RUclips camera. Especially for new channels!
I think 4K is still over-rated. it's pointless unless you have a 4K tv, 4K laptop, 4K pad, 4K phone. I have none and have no reason to ever buy anything 4K. so someone filming their stuff in 4K isn't even being watched that way by most viewers. I guess if it's mostly for personal use and one has all the 4K viewing capabilities, then i'm sure it's great. but most I think intend to share with the world, and most people probably still don't have 4K.
is there a quality outside mount for long term, construction time lapse that you could recommend? I want to mount to the top of a 3-story corporate building.
I'm surprised you say it won't do as well in low light as some other offerings. Which alternatives do you mean? I was pretty much sure that it's still the king even in low light.
Help! bought fdrx3000 recorded video now trying to transfer to my android done! unlike gopro easy to locate files but sony app would have to SEARCH the recorded files...difficult to make movies...any easy simple way like gopro quik app? Thanks.
Can you film without problems in the absence of the screen, as for the camera? The videos of the x3000 seem to me much less defined than the gopro 6. Thank you!
Really agree. All it lacks is a gimbal and a monitor screen, but gimbals aren't what Sony is good at. And the design is pretty old. And it REALLY needs a view screen like DJI Pocket, that can be on the front for vloggers and on the back for b-roll-ers.
No lcd monitor to playback footage. Add the watch accessory then its same price with hero6. Its longitudinal design makes an akward postion for bodycam. No built in waterproofing. Hero6 can shoot raw colors for better dynamic range. Plenty of recording options 4k/60 , 2,7k 60 /120fps options wherein sony only lets u choose between 4k 24/30 then down to 1080 60/120. Plenty of cheap gopro mounting options and accessories. I also have yi4k+ which shares gopro accessories.
Not when it’s optical stabilization, optical/mechanical physically moves the sensor around so there is no need to crop in on the image. Electronic image stabilization is where they crop in.
Awesome reviews. +1 sub, Im a keen LBG rock fisherman (person who catches large fish from land based locations) looking to invest in a decent action camera. considering the hero6 due to ruggedness, voice control, and its water proofing. Would you advice the sony over the gopro for someone fishing lone on rocks in wet conditions often? Also purchased a $50 New Zealand dollars 'everis action camera' and have uploaded some footage from it onto my channel if your interested. Really shaky but housing was good. lot of fun for a beginner.
A superb unit indeed...but one would expect it to be worth waiting for the soon to be released update (and then one can pick this up for a nicer price!)
I own this camera and would agree that it has awesome image quality and stabilization but menu system is a pig and lack of a screen (for me) is a major omission. I do have version with a separate screen which is totally useless - small and unclear image and it can take a while to connect and not touch sensitive. I wish next version would be more GoPro like. If a Hero 7 improves mic quality and include mic input I will be getting that instead.
I'm going to be traveling the world. I'll be in every type of terrain and conditions. I already have an Apeman action camera. I was looking for something like more of a traditional video camera, as I like the control, zoom, and handling. Also I have more experience with them. The main reason is I would like to be able to record more "film/tv" type stuff. I would prefer something durable and packable. I am absolutely clueless of what to get and desperately need an experts advice. I am way out of the loop and I know the tech is way different now. Any suggestions? Much obliged. Cheers.
Someone should make a museum of bad camera (or product in general) naming. I'd want to add Panasonic to it too, their Micro-Four-Thirds line-up naming is all over the place, especially over the three regions (US, EU, Japan).
Couldn't agree with you more about this wonderful gem. The best part is, when not underwater or attached to a rally car, it is stuck to my windshield where it makes for a brilliantly smooth loop recorder of my daily drives. One tiny camera, so many uses.
what is the lens size for the Sony X3000? 8mm, 10mm, 12mm?
WOuld also like to know
It says in the video: 17mm wide
My favorite Camera I own...of any. Picture quality and motion stabilization second to none! Audio...great! You’re right this deserves more attention!
What is your opinion of the GoPro 6 vs Sony X3000? Cant decide between the two but it seem the sony is the better
Avean I think both the GoPro Hero 5 and 6 are great the Sony I believe has better video quality than both but the touchscreen and convenience of the GoPro Hero 5 is excellent and the microphone is good to the microphone on the Sony is excellent it just depends on what you want to do I prefer the Sony for my own personal use

sony should really update this gem
it's been a while since the first release
samething I was thinking.
I'm sure they did release an update not long ago, saw it linked at r/sonyactioncam
Did you update the firmware to 1.1?
Honestly, I got this camera and hated it. Returned it within a couple weeks. I don’t think it’s worth the price you pay. Although it has good specs its UX in my opinion isn’t worth the burden. But that’s just me, I know a couple people who use it and love it.
I've had a Sony hdr-as100v with the Watch for years and it great for shooting Trip Reports, snow boaring , and jet ski videos. Love it!
I'm using it now and it was superb!
Your review was very important to support my decision. 95% of my videos are made with this little beast!
It is still a great camera!! Thanks bro
I still want one!
I am using this camera for mostly all of my videos.. it is indeed very good, but after shooting in 4K over an hour (without any housing) the footage starts to get a bit blurred for some reason...

If you are a scuba diver the x3000 has an underwater setting that adds the red color back in!!!

Its sooo good!
Looks a lot like my old Midland XTC-300! In 4k, with some bells and whistles added.

*hello Please can you tell me where can i find the yellow double (upside down) grip that you got at this video at **7:05**..? THANK YOU*
Your editing just keeps getting better and better. Good work sir!
It's waterproof for a quick dip without the case. I got some 1600mah batteries from Enegon and they extend the battery life to over two hours and that's with the WiFi on. Great camera!
Oh man, I will end up buying one... First iphonedo, now it's you recommending it =)
Yeah I’ve had one for almost a year and it’s wonderful!
Hi, how you mount it on smooth Q ?
You should have tried the camera with lavalier microphone before giving the microphone input any praise as a lot of people are facing issues with it. Røde Videomic Pro is bigger than the camera itself, expensive and doesn't sound better at all on the Sony IMO.
Let’s say if I choose this camera to record, the things I would like to record would be swimming, hiking, and any other adventures. But would this be the one to go with or should I maybe go for a different camera to use for vlogs?
I picked up the FDR X1000VR for 137 bucks with the Live view remote brand new. For that price I can live with the electronic stabilization
The X1000V is an awesome camera too! I used one for about 4 months.
i just bought x3000 last week, never regret it!!!!
I have one for over a year..... and it is amazing in many respects but it picks up the smallest puff of wind. I have now resorted to using an external mic with a dead cat.
Don't forget the Sony HDR-AS300 Action Cam with Wi-Fi which is still HD at 1080 !
The biggest selling point of this camera is the optical IS system - it’s considerably better than the electronic IS of the GoPro.
People complained about distortion with the built in mic jack as they couldn't lower the sensitivity but that sounded good. How did you mount that? Thanks!
Which would you pick if you could only get one. The sony or the dji pocket osmo?
I use this camera for vlogging on my channel. Just wonder what selfie stick you are using. I’m talking about the one you had attached with the rode mic
Hey TEDD, the audio without the RODE mic is surprisingly strong still... Awesome vid bud Hey from Oz :)
Yeah it's an absolute monster of a camera, it has a microphone right underneath the lens. 👍
3 years in the future. What do you think about this camera compared to a GoPRo 9 or 10 (coming soon)
How do you center yourself with no viewfinder
An Action Cam is for video, if you want to take stills, pony up some cash on an RX100
Stabilisation, discovered this on the Sony HDR-CX405 and now the Sony FDR-X3000. Best value for money, without a doubt.
Sony is very underrated
When it comes to their action cameras I totally agree!
I agree. :-)You can see why if you check my comment.
It narrow and doesnt generate a lot of windresistance like the wide GoPro.
any chance they are going to release an update for this camera? I have one myself. its awesome! but an update would be great.
Bought one and never gone back to GoPros since, so good for motorcycle vlogging....and I can use all my GoPro accessories with an adapter off Amazon.
How you hold the camera and the microphone. where can I find that selfiestick 1/4 or so please
If the camera is switched off and you hit record on the remote will it turn on and start recording?
Somebody was saying as well that the Sony can keep its image stabilisation in bad lighting conditions, where the go pro loses it?
Thank you every day dad, was waiting for this video for so so long. Finally !!!
Hey TEDD, have you played with the HDR-AS300 yet? I like the 4K capability in the FDR-X3000 but at only 30fps, I may stick with 1080p60 which the AS300 can do plus it still has a mic jack. Where the X3000 may win is the superior image stabilization.
I haven’t but they are basically the same camera but the FDR does 4K and the as300 doesn’t.
Woud it add indoors if a light set up is used?
When you mention that a camera is waterproof or comes with a waterproof case, it helps to also mention the depth that it's rated for. Just sayin'......some of us scuba dive with our cameras.
What are the mega pixel for still shots? How is the still shot image? How does the camera do in low light video?
Love the FDR X3000 - really wish the rx100 had microphones on the front and a slightly wider starting focal length!
Just came across this video and I was wondering if you had any suggestions on the light settings. What is the best aperture ?
Would you say this camera is still on top now? At least top 3?
this is my favorite camera! only down side is the battery life is pretty bad. if the lcd screen was backlit, it would be perfect! i use usb power for longer shoots. the image quality and wide angle is perfect!
Great video man, I just got that camera for my flyfishing trips. What setting do you use for the outdoor videos? Should I use 4K or 1080? 4K takes so much space tho.
Thanks again
I would use 1080p, while this can technically do 4k its not really something I'd use.
It's one of the best Action Cam by far and there are not much brand out there could surpass it's technology, unfortunately Sony never listen to consumer's need by producing accessories to enhance its capability, like making an adapter for gimbal.
I like the AS300 better. Its the X3000 without the hard to edit 4k.
In all fairness you could just film in 1080p on the X3000. I'm sure the AS300 is great too though.
Yep. The AS300 is just cheaper to buy but has same picture/audio quality and video stability. It's almost the perfect RUclips camera. Especially for new channels!
hard to edit? get a flipping 4 core/8thread cpu i7 level.
I have an i7 and its still hard to edit. Also most content is seen on mobile phones. 4k doesnt matter there.
I think 4K is still over-rated. it's pointless unless you have a 4K tv, 4K laptop, 4K pad, 4K phone. I have none and have no reason to ever buy anything 4K. so someone filming their stuff in 4K isn't even being watched that way by most viewers. is there a quality outside mount for long term, construction time lapse that you could recommend? I want to mount to the top of a 3-story corporate building.
This camera is very popular in South Korea I'm surprised that it's not popular at all in the US
Issues with fogging in cold weather or water?
Canon Vixia mini X. Better mic, flip screen, tripod foot, and lens cover built in. I just can't understand why it never caught up.
How do you like its still image? I find it really crappy.
please tell me whats the options should be for external mic//??
I'm surprised you say it won't do as well in low light as some other offerings. Which alternatives do you mean? I was pretty much sure that it's still the king even in low light.
Is there a new version of this camera coming out ?
Help! bought fdrx3000 recorded video now trying to transfer to my android done! unlike gopro easy to locate files but sony app would have to SEARCH the recorded files...difficult to make movies...any easy simple way like gopro quik app? Thanks.
Ok great but does it have pause button for pausing while recording?
Can you film without problems in the absence of the screen, as for the camera? The videos of the x3000 seem to me much less defined than the gopro 6.
Thank you!
Really agree. All it lacks is a gimbal and a monitor screen, but gimbals aren't what Sony is good at. And the design is pretty old. And it REALLY needs a view screen like DJI Pocket, that can be on the front for vloggers and on the back for b-roll-ers.
I find the name easy to remember and the menu easy to navigate but people are different.
Ben Cruz but Sony BOSS is unbeatable compare to jumpy EIS of GoPro
The Hero 6 came out two years after the X3000, wait until Sony releases a new action cam.
John yea thats a give and take situation. I add stabilization (post) in final cut for smoother shots tho
How does the image stabilization work? Isn't it necessary to reduce the size of the image in order to make it stable?
If you are going to be around water regularly I'd get the gopro. I'd personally feel better knowing my camera is fully waterproof in any situation.
thanks. i appreciate the advice.
If a Hero 7 improves mic quality and include mic input I will be getting that instead.
does the Sony have something like pro tune or slog or cine4???
Which one you recomemded gopro7 or this sony?
You are 100% true... I have this camera and I really love it.
Yeah it's really great! 😁👍
Hi, you forgot to mention its the only camera to have the stabalisation in 4K as well. Great review.
Cheers.
Should i buy DJI Osmo Action OR SONYx3000R ?
Nice vid man. Very clear and helpful.
Is that 3.5 jack in stereo? I'm thinking in terms of plugging in a stereo mic. Thx
Someone should make a museum of bad camera (or product in general) naming. I'd want to add Panasonic to it too, their Micro-Four-Thirds line-up naming is all over the place, especially over the three regions (US, EU, Japan).
I will nominate Asus and HP for dumbest product naming champs.
Ha! Great idea! 😂
I wonder. Can this be mounted on a drone? Like the Karma
Where can I buy this Camera ?
Can the Sony X3000 record in both NTSC and PAL?
Great video as usual. Can you live stream with this? What is the best camera to live stream outside sporting event using phone wifi? Thanks
You are supposed to be able to, but I cant get it to work yet. Something I hope a firmware update will fix.
Thanks for the quick response. Any ideas for other options? I saw that the hero 7 has a direct to FB live feature, but is only in 720p.
Why you didn't upload on 1080p ??
It is! I just did an episode about how it's become my vlogging solution.
earth shattering camera bro
It's really darn good 👍
Apparently the naming problem happens to the sony earphones too
