Yes, but this is also a sign that black people overall are being pulled out of poverty. The need to be rich is what drives so many people, when they are content we see less culture.

Damn the crowd knew every word that Peter Gunn's verse. This is one of the livest rap performances I've seen at the Apollo.

I was in the audience during this performance. At the age of 18, I attended a taping with my friend from high school and his 12-year-old cousin. This segment was filmed dead-last, at about 2 in the morning. My friend was so ready to get out of there, to the point that he looked so defeated while he “raised the roof" (I kid you not, he yawned and then silently raised his arms up and down with a straight face). Can't say I blame him, because the long intermissions made the taping unbearable, especially since the seats were so tight. I had no idea the Apollo Theater was so small, since it looked so big on TV, nor was I aware that they tape multiple episodes in one day. Therefore, Montel Jordan (who wasn't in the same episode as Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz) was one of the performers that night, which was delayed by one of his background dancers who had an asthma attack. During an intermission, Steve Harvey was ready to call it a night as well, which was evident by him sitting on the stage with his head down while tapping his knee with the microphone in a bored manner. I give him his props, though, because he also interacted with the audience and joked around. That night, one of the camera lights on the ceiling blew out. The audience got all jumpy. Steve said that only the black people in the audience started panicking, and then put on his white guy voice, "What's the matter? It's just a flame." After the Apollo Theater locked up the premises for the night, the three of us stopped by the local White Castle. They were out of french fries! My first time at a taping of "Showtime at the Apollo" is one experience I will never forget.

I love steely dan but they totally fucking screwed them. And this being their only hit from their only album makes it more sad. Still a banger in 2024 tho!
