everything looks great George...alot of blooms your cernua is amazing.if you can grow that you can bloom anything in my book.and i saw a Dockrilla maybe lingueforme that looked great as well...i am sure i don't provide the amount of humidity in winter..it is difficult maintaining in a big space. Very interesting weather data as well..Thanks for sharing!
Cool terrariums! That lepanthes telipogonia and sophrinitis cernua are amazing! Thanks for the great details for the setups. Ambient temp app brings monitoring to a whole new level. I have over 100 orchids, just a few are miniatures. I have a ornithocephalus kreugerii, a spring bloomer,, and encyclia polybulbon in sheath. I think it has been renamed. I do understand very much the microclimates you talk about. Cool areas on lower stands are used for the dormant dendrobium nobile types and resting cymbidiums. Higher up are my warmer growing species, like vandas, cattleyas, etc. I honestly don't bother too much with humidity. I just take care of the other key components like good water quality and lighting. Its not perfect, but so far it's worked fairly well for me. The vandas and brassavolas are quite forgiving here. I think its the good light.
Thanks. I love terrariums; especially because one can grow some really high humidity loving plants just abaout anywhere in the world. The Ambient climate monitoring is awesome! Do you utilize any of their products?
@@LGW3-Orchids-Exotics No I don't but it's something I might consider buying. At the moment, I have a boring min max double thermometer that reads on both shelves on my stand. There is a 4 to 8C degree difference depending on the time of day, and whether its sunny. I aim to keep the top stand with vandas no lower than 15C to10C at night. Night and day differentials could be 10C on sunny days, less dramatic on cloudy days. I could use more sensors even though my grow space in my living room is quite relegated to just a stand in front of my window and another further away for the shadier loving orchids or those with flowers on display. I would like to incorporate a few computer fans in the set up. I dont have rot issues but its a relatively closed system for most of the day until I open the tented stand to check things out.
That is a wonderful video. I too am trying to balance out my terrarium. I have the components just having trouble getting everything to click. Can you explain again how you are running your fans to ensure that the humidity doesn't plummet? My prob is keeping the humidity from dropping so fast.
Thank you very much. What I did was put 4 small plexiglass panels on top that can be adjusted to allow a small amount of air in. I also have the dual fan which I have one pushing air in and the other pulls air out. The reptile fogger is set to come on every 2-3 hours for 5 minutes. This creates a nice cloud. You'll want to stagger the fan time towards the end of the humidity off cycle (just to dry a little in between fogging). The timing may be more or less depending on your environment humidity. I'm in NJ, so we average 65% Rh all year.
What a great video! You have inspired me! Got my ambient weather station just the other day. I have a cool terrarium in my basement and now I can track it better. How are you hanging your orchids on the top of your tall terrarium?
Awesome! They aren't a sponsor or anything, but I love their products. Monitoring temperature and humidity is super critical throughout the year for successfully growing plants! Thanks for watching.
Yes, I purchase a bunch of them off Amazon (cheapest place to by). They control all of the lights and fans. Just make sure you test them with a fan if you first by a particular brand. Some of the older ones had issues with switching on for fans. The newest versions do not appear to be an issue. My lights vary from 12-15 hours (winter - summer). Fans on and of for 30 minutes around the clock, and the humidifier ever 3 hours for 5 minutes.
Love your terrariums George, do you still have some orchids on display shelving in front of your window? I have a Lapenthopsis Astrophora 'Stalky' it's the cutest little thing. Thanks for sharing, enjoy your warming temperatures.
Thanks Margaret! Yes, I still have a few shelves of orchids in front of my windows and back door. I also have many hanging ones that are mounted. My house is definitely a jungle! I will have to look-up the orchid you mentioned. Thanks for supporting the channel as always!
Ecuagenera is great for mini orchids from Ecuador. They have a location in Florida. Another orchid retailer is J&L in Connecticut. Both companies have lots of great miniature orchids! Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the video. I live in south Florida. I plan to start a tank with miniature orchid. I plan to keep my orchids in my garage which is humid 10 months of the year. I also have a ac in my garage so I can control the temperature. Should I still be concern with humidity issues and which plant would you recommend?
You're most welcome. I would not be concerned with the humidity, so long as you have air exchange within the terrarium. I would suggest a cheap dual fan from Amazon that you can place on one corner to blow air in and another to pull air out. I use WiFi timer outlets to automate the full process every 2 hours (on for 15 minutes). This ensures good air movement to reduce the chance of a fungal/bacterial/viral infection. In Florida climate, I would recommend plants/orchids that prefer to stay on the semi-moist side and warm conditions. This will ensure some climate compatibility. Thanks for watching!
@@LGW3-Orchids-Exotics Thank you , can you recommend with plant I should be looking for. Not familiar with which plant are semi- moist and like warm conditions. Not of the websites where they sell them don’t indicate that.
GREAT video. I have been trying to get my terrarium balanced for a year now. Thank you thank you thank you for the fan suggestion. I wasn't taking outflow out. Why do you have the heat mat?
During the winter I use it to raise the temp inside (orchids like a 10F°+ delta between day/night). During the summer it's not needed. I now grow in a basement greenhouse. Thanks for watching!
@@LGW3-Orchids-Exotics Man, you helped me so much. Thanks for the heat mat info. I was just curious. Your plants and terrarium are gorgeous. I just flipped one of my fans. I hope that solves some of my dryness. Love the automation. just amazing.
@ 7:47 there is an orchid hanging on the right hand side in the foreground. Would you happen to have its name still? I have one aswell I believe but lost its tag a couple years back.
If it's just to the left of the orange on the right back wall then it's a Nageliella Purpurea. Gets purple flowers. If you mean in the front right (clay pot) it was a type or Restrepia. I just double checked at 7:47 in the vid. I think you are referring to the toenail orchid (Dockrillia Linguiformis).
I haven't seen (spanish moss) get moldy. Is this what you are referring to? A humidifier, misting setup, and a water fountain like I use should do the trick. My greenhouse humidity stays around 70% or more.
I typically water every day, alternating plants into 4 groups of watering sessions. So every 8 days everything will have been watered twice. I use a low fertilizer dose every time I water. During the winter I keep my TDS around 40-80 (starting from 0 with RO water). During spring/summer I will bump it up to 70-150 TDS.
