the intro thing you were debating is called a glottal stop. The harder sound is when you stop the air before voicing the sound, that’s the glottal “stop.” When you make the softer more breathy sound you release the air before voicing the “a” sound.

What you are talking about with the letters at the start is called “glottal onsets” for the hard sound, “breathy onset” for the soft sound, and “coordinated onset” for something in between- I learned this in my vocal lessons :) I personally think glottal onsets are more tingly!
