That Zeta yeah. Most fat PS2s have the battery compartment on the motherboard, except for the 3000X models, which have it on the side of the disc drive.
Thanks man, I managed to replace the battery in mine thanks to your video. It's not hard, just a lot of disassembly for something so simple as swapping a coin cell. To be fair though - 15 years in between changes is a long time ;)
This is exactly what I needed! I had some terrible graphical issues and couldn't run any games. Thanks to you I opened the PS2 up and cleaned it inside (it really needed that) and now it works perfectly fine (and loud). Much love ❤
@@RealAntixz if you see that sticker, you obviously have it somewhat taken apart, do not give the console power while disassembled and if you do don’t look at the light. Only reason to give it power while disassembled would be to expose the disc tray rollers to apply some lithium grease. Just don’t plug it in while you’re cleaning and taking it apart and you’ll be safe 👍

That’s the reason I made this. I got pissed off that no one had made a decent quality vid of a complete disassembly of a PS2, so I did it myself, and now it’s my most viewed video.
Jesus this is a nightmare! I'm losing my mind trying to reassemble my old ps2 but the f#cker just doesn't work anymore (it doesn't help that I have a learning disability so this is extra hard for me) All I wanted was to change the clock battery and now my 22 year old ps2 doesn't work, it worked perfectly before that, only issue was the clock battery. I wish I had never tried to change the stupid clock battery 😭🙄 this would be easier without those annoying ribbons....
Great guide! Was able to disassemble, clean and replace the battery in my PS2 with this video. Most videos do not cover the reasembly so that was very helpful. Some notable later model changes: There are variations in the disc drive (more difficult to remove the tray), orientation of the power supply is flipped and the power/eject ribbon cable is attached to the motherboard instead of the top shell. Easy to workaround though. Thanks!
A trick you can doo too stop the disc tray from vibrating and shaking when it comes out is to flip the console upside down open the tray on the underside of the disc tray you’ll see plastic teeth you wanna grease that area just little bit of grease of the teeth and work the disc tray in and out it will silent the noise it makes when you eject it and it won’t vibrate and shake anymore
Through some heavy referencing of the not 100% accurate SCPH-39000 series service manual, I was able to catalog most of the screws, but I'm going insane with only 3 left. ・There should be 8 black screws (labeled in the manual as 17) for the disc drive (4 for the top, 2 for the right metal turning thing, 2 for the side of the disc tray). For whatever reason, I have 9 and can't figure out for the life of me where it went. ・I have two tiny black screws with rounded heads. At first I had three, but then I realized one had a flat head and was meant for the bottom of the laser, not that the service manual mentions this. Other discrepancies include ・Only mentioning one of the screws labeled as 5, when there are actually 3 (they're the black screws with big flat heads that hold down the ends of the rods surrounding the laser and the one on the bottom of the disc) ・Saying that I need a screw labeled as 52 (between the length of the four brass screws that hold in the power board and the five that hold in the top heat sink) for the spot between the Reset and disc open buttons. I did find a screw around this size, but I believe it goes in the top of the case to hold down the piece with the Memory Card flaps and doesn't fit between the buttons at all. I can't find a single picture of anyone's top case from this angle, nor does the service manual mention or show it, so I can't confirm if that's where I originally got it from. At any rate, I had a third screw labeled as B265 (the brass-looking ones that go at the edge on the bottom heat sink along with the 7 silver ones), and it fit between the buttons without issue. ・A screw labeled as 16, called SCREW, SKEW that holds onto the left side of the laser. The manual makes it look like a + screw with a rounded head, but it's actually a very tiny Torx head screw. I've never disassembled a PS2 to this degree, and I really should have taken pictures, but I can now disassemble and reassemble it without need for a guide. It would be 100% if I could just find the locations for those last three stupid screws.
Really good guide! Was good to see this so in depth and saved me when I was reassembling it. Managed to snag a PS2 with memory card, original remote and controller for $20 AUD but it was covered in ciggy soot.
Thank you so much. I couldn't get mine back together until I watched your video. It still won't read my discs but I didn't touch the lenses. So that's probably my fault. Thanks again.
How would u reattach the controller ports ribbon cable?.. mine had slipped out one day from the base of the cable and I have no idea how to reattach it
at 17:27 what is this black rubber? on my ps2 she was dry and crumbling, I don't know where to buy another one and I don't know if I should leave without the black rubber.
Avaliando Coisas this is an adhesive pad that attaches onto the chips on the board to absorb excess heat. If it’s dry and crumbling like you said, you will probably have to either buy a new piece of metal shielding with the adhesive pads intact (look on eBay and search “ps2 parts”) or buy another PS2 (also on eBay). Do not use the system without the pads unless you play like 15 minutes at a time.
Do u think I can replace my 39001 power supply with one of these cheap ones found on eBay? (they claim to fit models 3000x up to 3900x). My console makes a weird buzzling noise everytime I power it on tough
You should be able to. If it’s for any of the 3000x models (minus the 10 screw 30001), it should work. DON’T switch it with one that fits the 5000x series models. Just check the region coding, see if it’s listed for the correct region (for you it’d be NTSC U/C or end in 1 for 30001), and you should be good.
I found my old play station 2 and wanted to hook it up. At 0:55 is there something supposed to be in that slot. Mine doesnt have a door on it and my sister and i got into an argument. I looked it up and in one picture it said it is a hard drive but in your video i dont see anything there
Its just the expansion bay cover. You don’t need a hard drive to use a PS2. You just need a memory card to save your data. Some of the covers have a metal piece in them while others don’t. Can’t explain why.
You have any information on what to do if the ribbon cable comes out from the power button? Tried to put it back and nothing. Just want to try and get an answer before I replace the ribbon
Mine wasn't like this at all. My middle piece is plastic and thus didn't have the plastic tray for the power supply, also my ribbon cable placement was different.
Hey. I need help regarding my PS2. I m facing this problem for the first time. It was working pretty well last month. I will list all problems. If there's any question regarding then please ask. Here's what issues I started facing: 1. There is no display. When I connect the PS2 and turn on the power button from the back. The reset button shows the red light. I then click on it and then the Green and Blue lights turn on. The fan at the back starts working. The disc tray is also working, but there is no display. 2. After clicking on reset multiple times it then starts to display but the start-up music is out of order. The sound gets hanged. The controller is working (i can enter to and go back from browser and system configuration ). If I click on the reset button again then there won't be any display again. Same issue. And if it displays (after resetting many times) and then when I insert any CD. Loading gets hanged, and if the game works out of the blue moon then there is no sound. Would be happy for the reply. Thanks.
That’s a lot of problems. The fact that it had all those problems in succession, something is up. Have you dropped it or gotten water in it? Have you had a power outage recently? Wanna make sure that you actually take care of it and not just throw it around.
@@FlyingV555 Yes thats alot of problems. But the surprising thing is that i always took care of it. It was never in someonesl elses hand. No water dripped and no shock. It did not even fall. I am not sure, but I believe that you can remove the metal plate of the motherboard before remove the DVD unit. Then you can easily disconnect all ribbon cables from the DVD, so you dont have to open the DVD in order to reconnect the ribbon cable from laser unit.
I think there are replacement cables you can get for that. If you can't find any, look for a replacement controller port/memory card slot assembly with the ribbon cable included. All I can say.
Good guide, I disassembled and cleaned electronic parts with compressed air as best as i can, i cleaned the case with soapy water and rinsed. I put it back together, but whenever i tight the screws below the case the dvd tray has hard time coming out. I loosened the middle screw (1:28, the right screw on the picture and the screw above it) it works fine now but whenever it's not horziontal (like, vertical) DVD tray just gets stuck. Any tips on that? Thanks again.
Alpay Tarhan I have had that same issue. You can try pressing on the disc tray to force it open immediately after you press ‘eject’. That is the easy fix. I don’t know any permanent fixes. If this doesn’t work just orient the PS2 in a way where the tray opens.
I had to replace my ribbon cable and laser, but after I did the ribbon cable I’m getting either too much tension or too much slack. I’m so confused, is there anywhere the ribbon cable slots through on its way to the laser to guide it? I’m stumped
You’re probably just putting it back in wrong. There’s no a lot the ribbon cable goes through to guide the laser. You probably put the laser in wrong. Double check that.
@@FlyingV555 I’ve done laser swaps before with many systems, I’ve done PS2s successfully before but everything went south with that cable on this one console . Took it down to that steel sheet phase, swapped them out and put the new one back seemingly identically, the laser works at a certain point when it has slack but stops the minute the laser goes to the far edge of the disc. If I try to push it back into that little hole that I’m guessing the ribbon cable used to store the slack, I’m getting such a tight fit that the laser won’t travel all the way down to the center spindle like it’s supposed to. Thank you so much, I learned how disassembled my ps2 with your method! I broke some pieces of plastic but it's ok, my ps2 works! PD: It was my first time doing this, and spend around 7 hours haha, muchas gracias saludos desde Mexico!
Ossiel Benítez de nada. I know a little Spanish. Can’t converse in it though.
@@FlyingV555 he said thank you very much, greetings from mexico
Gotta give a like. Needed this to find where that leftover screw was supposed to go, lol. Thanks!
18:00, the copper laser cable. How do I unplug it from where it’s connected to the board. I can’t figure out the plug and already have to replace the cable
Thank you for this vid ik how to take any ps console apart I just forgot where to put the long screws this is the only vid that explains it in depth I take all my console apart to deep clean cause to much dust makes any console sound like a fighter jet lol
thank you so much for this guide!! i was thankfully able to salvage my older brother's ps2, as I'm getting him a copy of guitar hero for his birthday !!! (we're suckers for nostalgia lol) thank you again !!!
Don’t mention it man. :)
Awesome, just fixed mine! Thanks for the step by step and the zoom ins etc, very helpful video 😊
Thanks for the guide. Helped me quite a lot while replacing the battery.
That Zeta yeah. Most fat PS2s have the battery compartment on the motherboard, except for the 3000X models, which have it on the side of the disc drive.
What the battery for
Thanks man, I managed to replace the battery in mine thanks to your video.
Much love ❤
What does the radiation sign mean? How do i be safe
@@MorbidSenseOfHumor sadly my ps2 did not survive 😢😢😢😭😭😭
When I recently reassembled my PS2 I forgot to put back the platic thing shown at 21:46, do I have to worry about something?
You quite literally saved my ass. Thanks for the highly detailed video.
On 23:05 I’m really struggling to get the laser off, how do you do it?
Does anyone know the name for the cable in the bottom left at 17:35? mine got damaged and I need to order a replacement cable. It plugs into the part with memory card and game controller ports on it.
Those are called ribbon cables. Look for “PS2 controller port ribbon cable” something like that.
Great Tutorial, Helped me with replacing the cmos battery
You’re welcome
Worked for me so thank you so much. Yesterday i got a fattie for 5€ and it came full of dust, with your video i took it apart and cleaned it to the very last bolt thanks!
Why tf did someone dislike this?? This is the most detailed process I’ve seen 😤
That’s the reason I made this. I got pissed off that no one had made a decent quality vid of a complete disassembly of a PS2, so I did it myself, and now it’s my most viewed video.
What a pain to just change a CMOS battery lol
Thanks for the video !
18:43 Shouldn't you reattach that ribbon back to the disk drive first?
Wonder if thermal paste would be good on the heatsink and chips?
How can I replug in the orange cable for the disc drive beacuse I accidentally unpluged it😢
I’m facing the same problem. Seems impossible
Thanks!
Man I got a qst. You changed the battery to read the Cds and fix the disk tray that open super fast on the 1st boot
Omg that is a great guide. I'm still nervous about doing my ps2.
Awesome video, super great every little detail 🤘😎
A trick you can doo too stop the disc tray from vibrating and shaking when it comes out is to flip the console upside down open the tray on the underside of the disc tray you’ll see plastic teeth you wanna grease that area just little bit of grease of the teeth and work the disc tray in and out it will silent the noise it makes when you eject it and it won’t vibrate and shake anymore
Worth a sub m8 ,very good video now I know how to attach that pesky cable to the laser.
I can’t get the ripping cable out, I dunno where you flick it up to get it out 😩
for anyone like me who was confused when he didn't reattach the laser cable around 19:00, he reattaches it at 22:54 so just keep watching :p
Other discrepancies include
・Only mentioning one of the screws labeled as 5, when there are actually 3 (they're the black screws with big flat heads that hold down the ends of the rods surrounding the laser and the one on the bottom of the disc)
・Saying that I need a screw labeled as 52 (between the length of the four brass screws that hold in the power board and the five that hold in the top heat sink) for the spot between the Reset and disc open buttons.
What does the ribbon cable to because I bought my ps2 off eBay years ago and I’m just now finding out it never had a ribbon cable
This explains the PS2 needs an ALL Digital makeover without all the fuss and hassle showing why the All Digital PlayStation console rules forever.
Thank you so much. I couldn't get mine back together until I watched your video. It still won't read my discs but I didn't touch the lenses. So that's probably my fault. Thanks again.
Thanks for this easy tutorial...like your video
Thanks man. Appreciate it.
Do not use the system without the pads unless you play like 15 minutes at a time.

thanks for the help, i found a dicipator sticker here in my brazil, now i will replace only the sticker. wish me luck
Thank you, bro ! Amazing tutorial 💪🏿
Here's what issues I started facing:
But there is one thing. Two years ago a battery that saves date and time stopped working. I was told that it only saves date and time. Does that have anything to do with it?
@@Durranihumayun10 that’s good that you took care of it. To answer your question, no the battery has nothing to do with those other problems. It literally just keeps date and time.
@@FlyingV555 Oh. Last time active was 28 august. Was working perfectly. Just tested last week and all those problems came. It was soo sudden. What do you think might be the issue? What if BIOS is corrupted? Any idea on how to repair that?
@@Durranihumayun10 for all of that to happen at once, something on the board went bad. I can’t say what exactly it is that went bad, so I can’t tell you for certain. Sorry about that. You’re gonna have to do some digging and post to some forums about that, because unfortunately that’s beyond me.
Thanks for the video man, very clear. Funny shit is that mine 39001 only was opened back when my dad bought it and send it to a shop for modding it with a Matrix chip and now, opening this dusty fucker after all this years, I see there's something like 4 or 5 screws missing. But whatever, cheers!

I like to know can you transfer a ps2 slim controller port to ps2 fat controller ports
You can’t. They’re molded differently.

I have SCPH-30001. Small magnet and plastic C/L flap fell out. Do you know where either goes?
Hello What is the power supply output in amperes ZSSR094ZA how many amps
Converted from volts it’s 8.3 amps for the power boards for this specific PS2 model (39001).
Please keep in mind that the RDRAM has it's die completely exposed and that something dropping on it can crack it, destroying the ram and bricking the console (although it is technically fixable).
_DO NOT ASK ME HOW I KNOW THIS._
I replace the power board on mine and the power bottom 12pin flex cable, and still no power is coming on? The model is 50001/N. Any idea what else it could be wrong?
The only things I can think of are:
You may not have the parts properly connected
OR
there’s some things else wrong with it. I don’t know enough of the technical nitty gritty stuff to check. Hope this was helpful.
@@FlyingV555 The old power board was 11.83v and the new Chinese one is 12.15v
The power button flex wire was damage by whoever opens the lid before, they ran the corner screw through. I replace the wire for a new one. No power lights are coming on.
@@cfoster8706 sorry for the late reply, but your console’s main motherboard could just be shot. Since you’re not getting power with 2 different power boards and different cables, I don’t think there’s any saving that PS2.

What are some tips for cleaning? Just use compressed air or something? I plan on putting the top and bottom pieces under the sink, and maybe use q-tips or something to clean the fan. I have to replace the clock battery in mine (I have an SCPH-50001/N, 3B date code)
- Compressed air for the board
- Rubbing alcohol and q tips for the fan and laser
- soap and water for the plastic and metal pieces
Hope this helps.

Do you know if there is a way to use a disc drive that connects to a pc motherboard and still have the front panel with the logo
No. I don’t.
I’m having trouble putting the controller port back on
I am not sure, but I believe that you can remove the metal plate of the motherboard before remove the DVD unit. Then you can easily disconnect all ribbon cables from the DVD, so you dont have to open the DVD in order to reconnect the ribbon cable from laser unit.
WakelessBee052 Silicon I think you can. I think I just took a detour and took apart the drive anyways.
Broke my controller port ribbon cable. I was almost closing when the controller port got loose and the weith took the ribbon away. Lost forever.
I think there are replacement cables you can get for that. If you can't find any, look for a replacement controller port/memory card slot assembly with the ribbon cable included. All I can say.
@@FlyingV555 Thank you, sir. I'll try my luck on that.

Is it possible that the cable isn’t bent into position correctly?
@@jk-474 possibly. When you get replacement ones brand new they’re straight. I’ve done it myself and it’s worked. So try that. If it doesn’t work, try another cable and make sure you bend it into position properly.
@@FlyingV555 Turns out that the paper tabs on replacement ribbon cable are actually too long and interfere with the flexibility of the cables.
