You speak of bottom fishing with this reel but the squall II is also a beast at casting. Even better is the casting Special Squall or Fathom. I'll tell you what though with the price of braid I don't want to put 500yds on it. I'd rather put on a spool of 300 yds and back the rest.
This reel can handle 60 lb bluefin tuna just fine even though its mostly for bottom fishing. Can't go wrong for the price. I got the reel with the line counter on it.
*** WARNING *** Penn Fathom and Squall star drags (left-hand models only): The cog screw that holds the handle in place is NOT reverse threaded, and I believe it is a design flaw. What this means is, when there's weight on the drag and you start cranking in a heavy fish, you will actually be unscrewing your handle! Oh, that small retainer screw next to the cog to keep it from moving? Doesn't work. Once the the cog has any play in it, the retaining screw no longer does it's job, allowing the cog to turn loose and your handle to come off. I'm not sure if Penn is aware of this, but they can fix this if they (1) reverse thread the cog screw, (2) Put a plastic or metal "yoke" to hold both the cog and retaining screw. Look at Abu Garcia conventional reel handles or older Penn handles for an example.
I've never had a problem casting this reel from a pier.practice casting with some cheap monofilament like 17lb.tighten your spool tension all the way and tie a 2 or 3oz weight to your line and barely back off your tension a little at a time until it slowly drops.practice casting and letting off the tension until you find your sweet spot.if you can cast a baitcast reel you cast one of these.

Perfect for Blue Cats on the Mississippi!
Great review. What would be the size difference between the 20 and the 30? Is the 30 just a wider spool or does it have a bigger side plate? Thanks!
Excellent break down
In it for the card.
Got an ugly stick that would work on.
Cool.
Would this be good for salmon trolling on lake Michigan?
Looking for a good catfishing reel for the Tennessee river where the 80 lb monster catfish live. Should I get a 30LW, or would the 20LW suffice?
Probably the 30 for the line capacity.
Keep up the great vids🤙🤙🤙
Looks like a really nice reel.
Not bad for a low cost rockfishing reel.
This would be the perfect reel for my girlfriend who hates laying line lol

Nice reel

So it's not a casting reel? So it's not good for pier fishing or bank fishing like at yetis???
Cast very well
What's the difference between the squall and the Fathom?
The fathom is constructed of metal while the squall is constructed of graphite(plastic)
Is this Reel good for surf fishing? Or for long casting??
No
