The chess question should have said "only diagonally". Only the rooks and, depending how you are taught, maybe the knights. All the other pieces can move diagonally.

In a previous quiz, we asked a question along the lines of "how many pieces are only capable of landing on a square of the same colour", which is more or less the same thing as "only diagonally"... well, the same answer at least. For this question, I didn't consider a knight to be moving diagonally. But as you say, it comes down to how you were taught as I was told "it's an L shape" :)
