  • Ronnie Long, the man who spent over 44 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, speaks with WCNC Charlotte Reporter Michelle Boudin.
    It was a record payout: The state of North Carolina, the city of Concord and the State Bureau of Investigation paid Ronnie Long $25 million after he spent 44 years in prison for a crime he never did.
    In an exclusive interview with WCNC Charlott
    Just 21 years old when he was sent to prison for a rape he didn't commit, Long lost his mother, father and two sisters during the 44 years before he was freed.
    "I ain't been compensated for nothing," Long said. "Bring my mother and father back. Bring me my 44 years back. Bring back my two sisters, [and] now I'm compensated."
    Long's attorneys filed a suit against the city of Concord, the state and SBI shortly after his release. The case was settled, and Long was awarded $25 million, a record amount for North Carolina. Part of the settlement included an apology from the city of Concord, something also rare in these kinds of cases.
    "If you have a chief of police, and he's tampering with the jury list, if you've got detectives that plant evidence, you commit perjury, you destroy evidence, and you knew with all the things you were doing intentionally, you were seeing me to death row," Long declared. "You were trying to kill me."
    The city's apology included accepting responsibility for "significant errors in judgment and willful misconduct by previous city employees that led to Long's wrongful conviction and imprisonment."
    Among the detectives named in the civil suit was Van Isenhour, who had a criminal record for theft and forgery by the 1980s. WCNC Charlotte reached out to attorneys for Isenhour and detective John Taylor, also named in the case. They didn't respond but told Long's attorneys both men were not in good health and couldn't even be deposed for the lawsuit.
    "You didn’t put me in the penitentiary wrongfully; you put me in there intentionally," Long said. "There's a difference between wrongful and intentional."e, Long said there's still no justice because his case is about the people who knowingly helped convict him and those who withheld evidence that could have freed him sooner, including the former Cabarrus County district attorney who recently stepped down. #RonnieLong #News

    Very disheartening that they robbed him of 44 years of his life for something he did not do. No amount of money can get back all that he lost but he definitely deserves compensation. Give him ALL his money just like he said🤨 I pray God gives him peace and that the rest of his days will be the best of his days!!!🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

    This shows you how crooked and broken the system is. I bet many people called this man a criminal and judged him. Them same ones will be judged themselves. 💯 He should have never had to go through that. Time is something we can never get back or compensate.

    Everybody involved in these lies, that had already died, purchased themselves a first class ticket to hell. These officers are no where near innocent. Thankful for the honest ones, just truly sad at the amount of bad ones and the lengths they go to

      Wrong, Long is still lying, so is the media. They purposely say things like 43 finger prints were id as not his on the scene.. Cool... How many were his? Also, Long not long before this left his social security on the scene of a totally different ra pe. The only reason he was not charged was because they victim could not ID who her attacker was.

    She keeps asking him what he bought with his money, that shouldn't even be part of this interview. 44 years of his life wasted, mom, dad and sisters gone to glory, that's something no amount of money can buy back.

Etc ... went to prison as a Young Man, his mother Later passed Away, father passed ETC...ETC.... the Agony of being behind bars and treated like a criminal when he was innocent all along!!! Thats mind boggling missed all the holidays, birthdays, Etc .. could have had children of his own, let's talk about that!
    the justice system needs to be Re-Educated take the Racism and Ego Out the justice system, and give people the Justice they deserve rightfully do not take sides because someone is black! Etc .. judgement Day is coming where everybody has to stand before the great white throne and they will be judged according to how you have judged to someone else any and everything you have done you have a good account for judgment for this hell Whole AmeriKKKa.😡 Justice for our people and billions of our ancestors ETC ....2024.😡

    First I would like to give my Blessing to Mr. Long for his courage to survive for 44 yrs in prison. Also my condolences for losing your parents, and two sisters before being released, and your brother shortly after being released. While we know that our criminal justice system isn't fair to poor people of color who lack the resources to hire an adequate defense is at the mercy of the court. Which we know the court has no mercy for poor black, Hispanic, white people. Mr. Long it should be your mission to tell the world what happened to you. God bless you, go in peace.

      @Jarro21 4 месяца назад +5

      The full information is that he got 750k for 15 years only because that's the law. They only give up to 15 years for 'wrongful ' conviction. The 25M is seperate and apart from that. He got the 25M from a civil suit. What he is talking about is the remaining 29 years of 50k per year that the state owes him and why the law sould change and not cap it at 15 years at 50k which they did and still is the law. Hopefully this gives some clarity. They edited out the details but that's in the full article and he's right because he wasn't wrongfully convicted.
