Bath is a city in southwestern England with over 90,000 inhabitants. It is located 160 km west of London in the valley of the river Avon. It covers an area of 29 km² and is famous for its baths fed by three hot springs. Their temperature exceeds 40 °C. They are the hottest geothermal springs in the UK. The first documented mention of the city comes from the time of Roman rule, when the Roman baths are mentioned. The Romans probably occupied Bath shortly after their invasion of Britain in 43. From the Elizabethan to the Georgian period, it was a resort for the wealthy. In the 18th century, the city was an important cultural center attracting aristocracy from all over the country. After London, Bath is the most visited city in Great Britain. The main source of income for the city is tourism. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1987.
