Great interview. Manny Steward was second to none in terms of boxing insight.

The old commentary team of Lampley and Foreman were the PFP goats of the Mic.

I saw this before I watched Fury's heavyweight match with Usyk and I thought Lampley was reflecting his own fears of the big guy as Goliath. Fear of the big bad Paul Bunyan. As far as Steward is concern, all trainers and often coaches in other sports always see the boxing prodigy as a potential great. It's only when they get their claws in them that they can determine what is missing and what needs to be developed. However the attributes that Lampley so vividly remembers is exactly how Fury fought Usyk. "Natural constitution is a back-up counter-puncher (fighting on the back foot). His first instinct is to protect and is particularly 'hand-skilled' in his abilities on defense." Lampley goes on to mention what Steward felt was Fury's learning curve and which was developing the ability to go forward 'when appropriate and put his weight behind his shots - he will become a colossal power puncher. He will be an unbeatable heavyweight champion.' How many people think Lampley is taking liberties with Emanuel Steward's comments? I doubt that any trainer, and yes I have had discussions with Emanuel as a writer, would go so far as to say that he would become an unbeatable heavyweight champion. Although I'm sure Emanuel was enthusiastic about what he saw in Fury's potential, he would not IMO, have taken an unknown quantity and projected such greatness except for in potential terms as Emanuel did with Lennox Lewis and Klitschko. Lampley is perhaps missing the spotlight and wanted to interjected his own opinion by using an authority like Emanuel to support his view. I don't doubt that Emanuel saw greatness in Fury. Trainers and coaches always see a perspective candidates potential, yet I doubt that he would have gone so far out on the limb without having worked with him in actual fights. Steward believed that a boxer had to gain most of his experience through sparring a lot of rounds in training. He only worked with Fury long enough to see the potential, yet not long enough to determine whether the potential would come to fruition. Besides a boxer is only as good as he's capable of sustaining the developmental training that will bring his potential out. Emanuel had experienced enough failures to know that not everyone can sustain the focus and dedication necessary to stay the course, especially after they have become champions and Fury has showed us that he simply didn't have that unrelenting drive to sustain his greatness and build upon it. He got what is coming to any boxer who doesn't take his career seriously

But did Stewart know how inactive Tyson Fury would be throughout his career??
His inactivity has definitely killed his best year and he will never reach those predicted heights
