@RedWaveFan You apparently don't understand how to use screws. Under almost all circumstances a screw needs a pilot hole, so there is no (if you do it right) wedge effect at all. Screws are extremely useful in holding two pieces of wood together, for example if the wooden lug in this project was an added-on separate piece. The usefulness of screws in holding two pieces together is equal to holding on securely a lug/protrusion which needs additional support. Unless you somehow think that the lug would be stronger if first cut off, and then reattached, ??? a screw will provide substantial additional support to the lug. Oh, and one other thing, any risk of splitting caused by a screw would be at roughly 90° to the shaft of the screw, whereas the thread of the screw holds things together along the length of the shaft of the screw, holding material near the tip of the screw in a fixed position compared to the head of the screw. And I didn't say you couldn't paint plywood, only that it would need filling (along the exposed edge) _before_ you can paint it.
