My PBS deduplication factor is 72.55 (times less space used), thanks to block level deduplication. Great Proxmox integration out of the box, no requirements for windows, LXC support... It just works.
Rumor has it that Veeam is shifting to a Linux deployment for the main VBR server, possibly as early as 2025. Huge win if true - they've been developing different components to be run on Linux and this feels like one of the last big hurdles to getting a good platform for Veeam in the homelab.
That would make a lot of sense. I did have to laugh when I was configuring Proxmox in Veeam, and I needed a Linux worker VM to do the actual backups. Clearly, if you need an intermediary to get the job done, you should work on getting rid of the middleman.
Yeh Veeam really just needs a standalone free web gui version of their software Installing a windows VM to control the veeam software is prehistoric and laughable in the current day & age
It has been openly communicated that Veeam is working towards adding a Veeam Backup & Replication server on Linux, this was previewed and showed at VeeamON in 2024.
Great video man! I appreciate it. We're a Veeam partner and I'm so pumped about this. I do agree about the windows thing. Not because of the license but because I want to run Veeam in a docker container on our TrueNAS units. It would be so much easier to do that IMO. To me that makes D.R. way easier and write ups easier as well. Also yada yada ZFS or whatever lol.
Backup and recovery is one of the primary reasons I use PVE, or virtualization in general. Even beyond virtualization, the ability to virtualize storage is the key concept for me, and backup and recovery is much more stable and available in a virtual environment. I would explore Veeam since it is used in many client environments, but for my homelab I'm more reluctant to go with a non-OSS solution, especially with licenses.
Well I must said: I am using PBS for years now, and in my point of view, it's great! In fact I just recovery an entire PVE VMS last weekend, just with PBS!... For me, it's just work!
I would never use a Windows Based system as a backup target. Sure, for some people around it is the way to go, but I personally prefer Proxmox Backup Server. Way easier to me and I can even run it as a VM and pass some ssds as storage. Works. And I'm happy :D
You sound like those old school Linux/Unix admins that are stuck in the 80's they don't understand the concept of being able to pivot when it comes to technology.
Great video, but one thing not cleared, the Windows Server it was installed on, where should I actually put it, bare metal or Proxmox itself or some other virtual environment ?
On Pve 8 i tried several time to install veeam agent for microsoft to install as just need to create normal back of the full server 2022 but it was showing the "identifier not found" i did this 1 month before then i install the server on qnap then it works..
After working with cream for the last 7 years in an enterprise environment, including their immutable vaults etc. I would not touch it with. A barge pole. It’s crap.
Yea it's the windows requirement that kills it for me. There hasn't been windows in the office or home in well over a decade and I don't see myself going back to it anytime soon if at all if I can avoid it. Plus my PBS setup has been rock solid for some time now...
7:20 please do not record yourself rudely slurping a drink. I'm here to learn about Veeam's Proxmox support and nearly closed the video on reflex. That is more of a me problem, but it really didn't add anything to the video and I believe I'm not the only person put off by that sound. Other than that, thanks for the video.

Yes that’s correct they are moving away from windows. In veeam 12 they switched from MySQL to Postgres, so customers can migrate when the time comes.
Hopefully, they go the appliance route, get rid of overhead of a full Linux install.

When using Synology as a store, switch from SMB to NFS. The performance change is significant.
Good suggestion, I’ll give it a try!

Great video - I work for Veeam. Lots of great comments here.

I’m looking forward to digging into PBS next! I’ve also heard it’s really good.
@@2GuysTek It's has it's flaw, tought. But the main key, at least for me, it's the PVE integration and remove sync.
Awesome video sir !! Me love Veeam ! Currently using Proxmox backup for my server because its unlimited backups & vm's.

Linux as base OS for Veeam would be great

Veeam - No permanent licenses.
Also not support Huawei Storages.
Veeam requires Windows? Really? In current year?
Utter garbage.
Do you realy need a french title and a robotic french voice ?
I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about friend.
