Wedding photography, you are a braver man than I! Great job you did, difficulties aside. I couldn't think of a more stressful photography job to take on, missing those fleeting moments and one can't go back, and you got quality results. BTW, I saw one video of a wedding photographer, and the guy as doing what the couple who hired him asked while being unobtrusive. Nonetheless, the officiant stopped the service to chew out the photographer. The photographer, mortified, did HIS best to keep it from getting more awkward. I'd have been angry and then some if I were one half of the couple being wed, and kudos to the photographer for keeping his cool, he really was the bigger person between him and the officiant.
Kind of off topic, but your candid shots in this remind me of a movie called Countdown to D-Day. It's about, naturally enough, the planning of the D-Day landing in WW2. The director of the movie was running around with a still camera during shooting, and other cast and crew sarcastically remarked that he's found a hobby. But what the director was doing was taking still shots that he planned to use as intros to each scene of the movie, something that worked out to a really neat effect in the movie, it was of the cast in unguarded moments. I recommend watching it for that reason alone, but seeing what those American, Canadian and UK troops went through to liberate France is something I think we should keep in mind from time to time. Another movie, although (IMO) rather cartoonish in parts, worth watching is The Patriot with Mel Gibson because they SO nailed the lighting in that movie.

The images are wonderful and I am sure that the bride and groom were so happy with the images that you had crafted for them. Keep well. Cheers, Keith

I photographed weddings for 20 years, it is not advisable unless you are technically 100 percent. It incorporates selling, portraiture, organising groups of people, architectural photography, food photography, macro, creative flash, (very important in winter), having a plan for adverse weather conditions, back ups of backups and all while being amiable and professional. Finally, over delivering to a satisfied customer. When it goes right it's easy, when it goes wrong is when you earn your money.

That's why it's so important to dominate gear/flash and know light, so we can handle any situation with it, if necessary. I always carry a flash with me. These kind of situations are common here where I live.

Your anecdote reminds me of the 80s, using my F3 (a museum piece which I still have). The film stock would give a limited ASA choice, then you'd work out your exposure, and after that you could concentrate on composition. It was simpler, it was creative, but by damn it could lead to some stunning disasters at proof time.

There were great natural shots like when the Bride and Groom laughing, they probably forgot the camera was even there. They are the best shots, next time i go to a Wedding i will try the wide angle lens. Very enjoyable and useful video this was for me. thank you. 😊

Thanks for this! Once a year, I shoot a charity party event, winter mid-afternoon to early evening. t's held in a local restaurant, and the evening lighting is absolutely abysmal. I don't use flash, so the answer is generally high iso and wide open to get the desired shutter speed. Loved your results, and I'll probably watch this video a few more times before then. Cheers!

Alex I actually understand what you went through. Every Sunday I shoot pictures of our church's praise and worship service. I also shoot photos of the volunteers. First of all, I have to be careful to keep children out of the photos because some of the parents don't want their kids to be photographed. With a lit up stage and a darkened room, I don't always notice Mom standing there with a child in her arms, and the child looking right at my camera. So I sometimes have to create some pretty interesting crops to remove a child that I didn't see while photographing the service. Secondly, the media team loves to use multi colored lights for praise and worship. They also use low light. It took me weeks of taking horrible pictures to figure out the best settings to produce good quality images. I should point out that I own a Nikon D5100 (a crop sensor camera with a 16.2 megapixel sensor.) It makes shooting low light images intresting to say the least. I had to spend money that my wife really didn't want me to spend to purchase a 50mm f1.8 prime lens so I could shoot from the back of the room at f2.8, auto ISO with a max ISO 6400, and a shutter speed no slower than 1/120th of a second, and no faster than 1/160th of a second. Our praise and worship team does not stand still while singing. Finally, my camera is set up for praise and worship. The lighting is entirely different when the room is lit up, which means I have to change my settings for regular photos, and then change them back for praise and worship. I don't always remember to change the settings. So yes, I kind of understand what you went through on that day. I applaud your talent and ingenuity.
